Personal Career Analysis: Forensic Science Technician
Does a person actually believe the CSI television show to be real? “A forensic science technician help investigate crimes by collecting and analyzing physical evidence” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). This is a field most people tend to find eerie; but not me as a child, I found it to be fascinating. The collecting evidence and taking pictures of the crime gave me a thrill of wanting to learn more about the subject. Growing up, my mother always encouraged me to achieve my goals though some may be unrealistic. Forensic science, the science part of the job is not what hooked me on to this career. It is the crime scene itself first walking in and seeing what exactly happened.

not many educational requirements and bravo outcomes to become a successful forensic science technician. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, “it is needed to have a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, such as chemistry or biology” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014).
Most technicians decide to specialize in either crime scene investigation or laboratory analysis (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). I plan on finishing my degree in Criminal Justice and then go back to school later to obtain a degree in forensic science. Two BRAVO outcomes that I will be useful to use in being a Forensic Science Technician is basics and reasoning. “Basics is to require concepts such as scientific, mathematical, scientific, and creative methods through reading, listening, writing, and speaking all of which are key components in being successful in this job career” (Austin Peay University, 2014b). This career you have to be a good writer because over half of this job is just writing reports. You also have to be able to speak because some forensic technicians have to testify in court and it would be beneficial if that person knew how to put their point across. “Reasoning is the research and all what is involved in doing so hypothesize, experiment, and evaluate …show more content…
all needed in this career” (Austin Peay University, 2014b). Part of this job is recreating the crime scene which requires a person to theorize what has happened in the crime itself. As stated in the Austin Peay University Undergraduate Bulletin, “there are plenty of upper-division Criminal Justice courses that will lead me on to be a better Forensic science technician”. Criminal Evidence and Procedure CRJ 3020 and Methods of research/Administration are two of them (Austin Peay University, 2014a). When being a Crime Scene Investigator it is best to know how to handle evidence so it will not get contaminated. It is very good to know how to research something because as a forensic technician they are learning new technologies every day. The employment outlook for Forensic Science Technicians is not exactly that good.
“Employment if a forensic science technician is projected to grow 6 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). Applicants having a bachelors as well as masters have the best opportunity for career growth. It’s a growing career each and every day so the competition for this job will grow over time because of the interest in this occupation (Bureau of Labor Statistics,
2014). In a recent journal article Television scrambles the evidence shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation are making the work of real investigators a lot more difficult states that, “Television shows such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigators have made it more difficult for real forensic science technician because in court juror’s expect it to be like what happens in shows” (Hooper, 2005, p. 12). This can be as struggle for the real Forensic Science Technicians because in reality it takes a lot of hard work to gather all the evidence. Sometimes you are not even able to find certain pieces of evidence. Nothing is never what it seems especially not off a television show, but yet people expect it to be exactly like that for some odd reason. The American Academy of Forensic Science is an educational institute that’s goes in depth of learning all the aspects of forensic science. It is a program to help individuals become the best at what they do. The objectives of the Academy are to promote professionalism, integrity, competency, education, foster research, improve practice, and encourage collaboration in the forensic sciences (American Academy of Forensic Science (2014).Though a competitive program to get into I would definitely try my hardest to do so because I would to achieve my career at the highest level as possible. The URL is www.aafs.org. This is an academy that people should get into if there wanting to do a career such as this one. After researching this career and seeing the positive and the negatives it is still career I am wanting to do because no matter the difficulties it is something I dreamed. One step I can take to make this dream happen is make better grades in school. Just going to school and showing up is nothing I have to push myself and work harder. Once I graduate college it’s a just another stepping stone closer to the dream.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was introduced to viewers in October 2000. Since that time, the franchise has added two versions in major metropolitan areas, now addressing crime scenarios in Las Vegas, Miami and New York City. Based on the most recent Nielsen ratings for primetime television shows, the CSI franchise claimed approximately 35 million viewers during the 2010 – 2011 viewing season. The popularity of forensic science drama on television has led officers of the court to voice opinions that there is a “CSI effect” which alters the juror pools and outcomes of criminal trial proceedings. The differences between made for television fiction and actual crime solving are many and when jurors consider themselves pseudo-experts those lines may get blurred in the courtroom.

I began this year considering a career in forensics. After delving into the field in detail however, I see that it is a very delicate science and easily open to misinterpretation. There are many variables within forensics, the first and foremost being that of the CSI effect and how it influences our expectations of the capabilities of forensic science. While it's true that great advances have been made in the area of forensic science, it's unrealistic to expect a crime scene to be processed, evidence analyzed and a conclusive forensics report to be completed in a short time and be completely accurate 100% of the time. Forensic science has a lot of room for improvement, and understanding if, how, and why shows like CSI affect the field is of high priority. After all, this is real life and not a TV show.
Achieving academic excellence while obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice is the first step towards becoming financially able to support my son by working as a law enforcement analyst. While working on my degree, I am determined to maintain my 4.0 GPA, a challenge that demonstrates my ability to learn and overcome obstacles, as well as. This commitment to maintaining my GPA requires me to work on having a positive attitude, as well as learn about discipline, self-management, and hard work, all which are beneficial to me in my field of work. I chose criminal justice because it requires thinking about and analyzing facts to solve crimes while helping and protecting people, something I have always felt strongly about. Since I was
...im and there are no leads. However when he does have to go to a crime scene, there are crime specialists that are civilians who photograph and collect evidence at his direction. Normally they collect all the evidence, but if there are extreme amounts of evidence to pick up, then he will put gloves on and collect evidence. The investigator always waits for them to get there before any evidence is collected or photograph. Although some law enforcement agencies hired civilians to handle the crime scene processing and forensics, it is more common that the CSI is a licensed peace officer with specialized training that is part of an investigative unit (Orthmann & Hess, 22). If there is weapon at the crime scene, only the investigator can touch the weapon. (Velazquez). Vincent brings his evidence back to his office along with his notes and starts the investigation process.
In recent years, however, such programs as CSI that follows detectives at the Las Vegas Police Department Crime Scene Investigations Bureau as they solve puzzles and catch criminals. Perhaps one of the most well known shows with a forensic psychology theme, CSI has a large impact on viewers perceptions of forensic psychology. On one hand, the increased popularity of forensic psychology because of the show is good and more people are taking an interest in forensic psychology as a career. On the other hand, the forensic psychology that viewers see every week on television may not be exactly the same as forensic psychology in reality. Particularly programs such as CSI also overstate the ability of “hard” evidence (also known as forensic evidence), such as fingerprints and DNA, to provide evidence of definite innocence or guilt (Trask, 2007). They often disregard other components of the investigative process, such as police questioning, despite these being equally valid to establishing guilt (Nolan, 2006). This over-reliance on forensic evidence, due to the importance of forensic science being dramatized by television crime dramas, is also known as the CSI
In the CSI field, CSI workers must be very accurate about details and properly collect different forms of data and evidence (Crime 1). CSI workers must be able to write forms
Forensic science positions require a bachelor’s degree to work in the field. Understanding of legal procedures and knowledge can be helpful. Job candidates that have extensive hands-on experience with a variety of laboratory equipment, that includes computers and related equipment, don’t require a long period of on-the-job training. People that are interested in a career as a forensic science technician should take as many high school science and math courses as possible. Science courses taken beyond high school, in a bachelor or an associate’s degree program, should be laboratory oriented, with an emphasis on bench skills. A solid background in physics, math, and applied chemistry is vital. Approximately 30 colleges and universities offer a bachelor’s degree program in forensic science, and about a...
Crime scene investigators, also known as CSIs, have played an essential role in protecting citizens, by proving who is guilty, and who is innocent. CSIs use a large amount of Science and Math skills to solve crimes, resulting in a decent income. They are specialized in forensic science in order to examine crime scenes and recover important evidence (Career Cruising).
The education level chosen depends on what kind of forensic job you are interested in and what salary you are going for. Most entry-level forensic positions require a bachelor’s degree in forensic or natural science (see Anne 1996). Undergraduate programs consist of toxicology, biochemistry, and criminal justice classes. The American Academy of Forensic Sciences also recommends English classes. This is because forensic scientists need very honed written and oral communication capabilities to write detailed reports and testify to physical evidence in court.
There are several things that CSI shows get wrong. A few of them are that blood doesn’t always splatter everywhere whenever someone is hurt or killed. When you are watching the CSI television shows, they are always able to find some kind of amount of splatter blood at the crime scenes. Also, blood doesn’t glow under the ultraviolet light, but it does turn dark black. You can make blood glow to try to see it, by using a chemical call luminol. In the shows, they make it seem like the crime investigators are always doing something exciting. In reality, they spend a lot of time in an office. They have to bring all the evidence back to their office and document it. They also have to submit the photos they take to evidence on CD. They have to take
It's something about finding the evidence to help tell put together the pieces to the puzzle of the crime that I enjoy most. I love that what I do is helping give someone some type of justice or make them feel better about whatever situation they have been placed. I think I could however do without the smells of decomposing bodies.Always maintain your emotions. Keep what happens or what is seen at work there. Don't take anything home with you. Remove your feelings from what happens at the scene. The most prevalent issue would be the "CSI EFFECT". It's pretty simple to keep up with current event in this field if you are apart of a field related organizations as well as being dedicated and staying educated in the field. What you love shouldn't feel like work and shouldn't be a burden it should be something that keeps your attention something that you want to know more about each day.The main concern in the field is making sure you have maintain the chain of custody on the evidence. It doesn't matter how well you worked the scene or how much direct evidence you have. If you cannot show who and where the evidence has been it's
According to the American academy of forensic science, the forensic sciences form a vital part if the entire justice and regulatory system. Forensic science is an enticing career having to do with science and criminal justice, a large variety of schooling is needed to start this job Despite the fact that it can be a dangerous environment it can be an exciting profession to pursue. There are many different fields in forensic science that you can study or major in but they all have the same objectives.
“The word ‘forensics’ means “connected with the courtroom”; so forensic science is, therefore, concerned with gathering hard evidence that can be presented in a trial” (Innes 9). Forensic science is a science that is applied specifically to legal matters, whether criminal or civil. “Few areas in the realm of science are as widespread and important as forensic science” (Hunter 12). Forensics is the one science that is most commonly used in everyday life. It is also a branch of science that incorporates other branches of science such as biology, chemistry, and etc. Since it is used almost every day “No one can dispute the importance of the contributions to society made by forensic science; the ability to solve crime is undeniably important” (Hunter 13). Forensic science has given criminal investigation a new edge. “Advances in science have opened the door for more effective evidence discovery, howev...
