Senior paper sounds like a hard thing but I have actually enjoyed researching something I like. This year of schooling has been easier than any other year of school; mostly because I have been doing stuff I love. This entire paper was all centered around something that you like and that is why I have chosen Knee injuries, sounds weird that I say that I love knee injuries but what I mean is that I love things about the human body. I have always had an interest in how the human body works and when I started hurting myself at a young age from hitting my head on things, tripping and scraping my knee I always thought it was so cool. When ever I have gotten stitches I have liked to watch or when other people have had injuries I have loved to watch how to fix it. At first I thought I would maybe read some stuff and watch a couple videos, but it soon turned into more than a couple articles and a whole lot of videos and It was awesome! I have learned a lot about ACL, as well as the MCL. I learned a lot about the tear and other things that can happen to it and also the recovery process. One of the most interesting things about it all is how it all works and keeps our knees together. One of the most interesting things I learned about is the fact that all the ligaments hold our knee together and allow us to walk, the ACL is the most amazing it is a very tight woven ligament that is about the size of your index finger, and that it can withstand up to 500 pounds of pressure. The other ligaments in your knee help the ACL out with other things, but the ACL is the main ligament and pulls most of the weight in keeping your knee
America’s newfound favorite pastime, football, came from a bizarre chain of events. Football started when a soccer player got fed up with just kicking the ball, so he picked up the ball and ran to the goal. His actions of picking up the ball and running with it fathered a new European sport, rugby, which was soon brought over to American shores, and was altered slightly, the shape of the ball and a few other small rules. The sport became organized into a league and produced the NFL(National Football League). The NFL had a slow beginning, but has picked up popularity, currently having a 9 billion dollar yearly revenue. Playing football comes with great costs, including physical and mental health deterioration, plus the amount of time spent prepping before game day. Which can pose several questions, “Why suffer for a game, Is it worth the money? Is it worth the fame? How great is the cost?” I believe that football, should have stricter regulations for the treatment of injuries, along with informing players of just how devastating a concussion can be, along with the other major injuries that commonly occur while playing football.

In order for athletes to save their active lifestyles they need understand the ACL. The ACL is the most important ligament in the knee because it provides stability to the knee. Athletes have to be aware of the importance of the ACL and know its functions in order to preserve the ligament. The ACL otherwise know as the anterior cruciate ligament is the ligament in the knee that connects the upper leg bone which is the femur to the lower leg bone which is the tibia. The anterior cruciate ligament crosses with the posterior cruciate ligament inside the center of the knee joint to stabilize to the knee in movement.
The most common knee injury in sports is damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) through tears or sprains. “They occur in high demand sports that involve planting and cutting, jumping with a poor landing, and stopping immediately or changing directions” (University of Colorado Hospital). The ACL is a ligament that runs diagonally in the middle of the knee and found at the front of the patellar bone. Its function involves controlling the back and forth motion of the knee, preventing the tibia from sliding out in front of the femur, and providing rational stability to the knee. Interestingly, women are more prone to ACL injuries than men. The occurrence is four to six times greater in female athletes.

For how often I chose these topics, I always learned something from them too. A torn ACL is one of the most excruciating experiences in an athlete’s life. It is the first thing that comes to mind when they hurt their knee on the field; for many it is their greatest fear. A torn ACL can sometimes mean the end of an athlete’s career.
A 16 year old, female high school soccer player, Lindsey Robinson tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) from a soccer game. Interestingly, she was not the only one in her team who injured her ACL, but also several of her teammates have torn the same ligament as well during the soccer season. Lephart (2002) found that women involved in physical activity are more susceptible to acquire the ACL injuries than men who are involved in the same physical activity (as cited in Ogden, 2002). According to “ACL Injury Prevention” (2004), the numbers on female ACL ruptures have been increased for the past ten year. Over 1.4 million women have been suffered from the ACL rupture which is twice the rate of the previous decade. Therefore, female ACL injuries are now a growing problem in the nation (Anonymous, 2004). Back in 1950s and 1960s, female participation in sports was rare; therefore, the rate of injuries was very low. However, according to “ACL Injuries and Female Athletes” (n.d), as Title IX was implemented in 1972, female participation in numerous sports has dramatically increased. Moreover, the rate of acquiring injuries to the ACL also has dramatically increased (Anonymous, n.d). In terms of comparing the rate of acquiring ACL injuries between two genders, females have higher rate than males do. According to the “Physical Therapy Corner” (2007), “women suffered anterior cruciate ligament injuries more often than men, nearly 4 times as often in basketball, 3 times as often in gymnastics, and nearly 2 and a half times as often in soccer” (Knee Injuries section, para.1). Its cool whenever of have the same injury minor or chronic. Why because some people have slower and faster healing time. Another reason is you don't know what going to be coming through the door. You don't know if it going to be something small like a cut or something big like a concussion. It keeps your job on your toes. You have 100 people to deal with so you're always seeing new injuries everyday. Hopefully not but always happens so we got to be ready for whatever.

The ACL is a dynamic structure whose main function is to provide primary restraint to anterior tibial subluxation. It provides secondary restraint limiting internal rotation and restraint with the knee in full extension. Along with the posterior crutiate ligament, it provides the axis for knee rotation and links rotation with flexion and extension.
Football injuries is something people hate to see and experience but are all a part of the game; and if athletes choose to play this sport they have to realize the longer you play the sport the more likely you are to get hurt playing that sport. Therefore athletes should be very careful and try to prevent if possible any injuries from happening to them as well as others.
Writing this paper has been rewarding to me. It has helped me come to know a different me. Set goals for myself and helped me put things into perspective.
