Many people seek employment, including teens like us. Sadly, having a job is just a dream for kids under 15 years old. Currently, there are very few jobs fourteen year olds can have. On school days (including friday), you are only allowed to work three hours. You do not get paid much money because of the minimum work hours allowed, which is seen as unfair from many people. What would employment at age fourteen do for us? Why do we need younger employees working? A small amount of business’ actually hire fourteen year olds. Mostly because of the three hours work time allowed for fourteen year olds on school days. A lot of business’ hire adults because of the unlimited work hours they can have. Having employees who can work for a mass amount of time can …show more content…
You can get a glimpse of what having a job will be like when you grow up. If employment was allowed at fourteen, it would give great opportunities to see the world around you. Potential careers can be explored too! Teens can learn to be responsible with life and with money! Jobs at younger ages help teens learn important skills, like filling out an application, how to interview, etc. Some people would argue that teens with jobs do not have enough time for extracurricular activities, lack of sleep, and even get bad grades. Jobs are a big responsibility to have. You should only get a job if you know you can have one. If your career is getting in the way of school, you should maybe consider not having a job. There are teens who feel they can handle that authority though. If a teen knows their work is not going to get in the way of their life, then why not try a job. It also looks good on your resume, because employers see you are hard working at a young age. Before getting a job, think about how much free time you have every day. Can you get your homework done everyday? For the people who have time to have a job, you should definitely give it a
In the essay, “Working at McDonald’s,” Amitai Etzioni shares his strong belief that working, especially at McDonald’s type restaurants, is bad for teenagers. I would agree that working is not a good thing for teenagers under some circumstances but at other times it is good. First, jobs affect school involvement and attendance in bad ways. Second, jobs often provide “on the job experience,” but much of the time the experience taught is useless. Third, fast food jobs may provide a disadvantaged status. Fast food jobs can also provide an advantaged status. Finally, workers can learn to manage their money by making mistakes with money before they get into the Real World.
Jobs won’t only support teens for the things they want, but it can help benefit for the things they need. The first things teens think of for their future are going to college and getting their first car. But, let’s say there’s a well educated thirteen-year-old, raised in a low-income family, who has plans on going to college. There’s no way their family can support him to go to college, and its funds could be over-whelming. The only way they could go to college is if they started saving at an early age. Therefore, if they got a job at the age they were at now, they’d be on their way to college by the time they graduate high school. Or, another example would be, if a teen wanted to get their first car on their sixteenth birthday. As you may know, many teens don’t get things handed to them on a silver platter, so they’d have to buy that car themselves. They might be old enough to drive, but they just turned the legal working age. Once they get a job, they’d have to wait at least a year to have enough money for the car as well as its insurance.
Response: I agree with Steinberg that working affects adolescents that are going to school. I believe that teenagers should concentrate on their studies and not become overwhelmed with the added stress of work. There is plenty of time for them to learn the “real world” of working, so why not let them be kids and have them worry about their homework and after school chores, rather than trying to make the almighty dollar.
Growing up all my friends had perfect jobs for teenagers. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time applying for jobs and searching for places to work because money didn’t come easy and I wanted to be in control of my own money. But I could never score a job. I applied to at least 100 jobs at least twice and I still couldn’t get an opportunity.
The first piece of evidence Etzioni brings to your attention is that the only possible skills you can gain from these types of jobs can not be used in later careers you may find yourself in. He says that teens work just to spend their money on “trite” things such as, “flimsy punk clothes, trinkets, and whatever else is the last fast-moving teen craze” (287). How can this be true when Etzioni doesn’t compare what these teens spend money on
Students spend four years of their lives attending high school. Going through high school is mandatory as it prepares them for college and strength to face “the real world.” Having part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among high school students and many students follow this trend as well. Moreover, there are some pros and cons attached with it. Though it may seem like working throughout high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for “the real world.” Although some people believe that the primary duty of a student is studying, I am of the opposite position. I strongly support the idea that high school students should work throughout high school. This is because they can earn money, become responsible and get experience.
How does dropping out of high school affects students’ lives in the future? Students’ dropping out has become a crisis, President Obama said, “It’s time for all of us to come together parents and students, principals, and teachers, business leaders and elected officials to end America’s dropout crisis” (“ President Obama”). There are 7 thousand students’ that drop out of high school that adds up to about 1.2 million each year, wouldn’t it be nice to drop that number and help kids stay in school instead of dropping out of high school(“ President Obama”). Students’ shouldn’t drop out of high school because they couldn’t go to college, couldn’t hold down a job, and would struggle making minimum wage for the rest of their life.
Teenagers like to play sports for their schools, the only problem is that they might have a job. In their mind they might think that they can handle two important responsibilities but in reality it is hard because their grades will suffer and eventually they will have to make a decision on what they have to give up some would take the job because they want money. It is a bad
Now children can have jobs starting at the age of 12, but from 12-16 they may only work limited hours where their education does not get back logged and not put first. They can also only work non-hazardous jobs and can only work two times a week during a normal work week (Mon - Fri). Past the age of 16 children may be able to work for as many hours as they want in a week. This being that they are more mature and it allows them to learn valuable skills in which they can use in life later down the line. With all the child labor laws put into place, children are able get a better education and at the same time make some real
The president of the United States encouraged and called on the states to require students to stay in school until age 18 or graduation. In the newapaper article President Pushes States to Raise Dropout Age by Mia Lewis its states “When students dont walk away from their education, more of them walk the stage to get their diploma,”the President pointed out.” Students should be required to stay in school until 18 or graduation. No matter the reason students need their education and the main reasons they should be required to stay in school until the age of 18 are to not have a bad impact on their adult life, the income the students will receive in later life because of the diploma the students will recieve for graduating, and finally because drop out age is 17 or 18 in some states.
Firstly, my transcript reflects my skill sets and abilities by working two jobs. Working as a teenager can be very stressful and hard. Majority of teens might agree that having a job while in high school is tough considering homework and just life in general. While working in school, you have to understand your priorities and make sure your time is being spent wisely. Making time for things is not always easy either. Seeing a student take care of their responsibilities and making sure they continue to have good grades shows more than people think about that
Working teaches students about responsibility and also reinforces what they are leaning in school. Having a job while in high school is a catalyst for future responsible actions and thinking. Teens are accountable for work attendent, job perfromance, and customer satisfaction. The attendence is very essential in a work place. Teens will demonstrate the skills they acquire from work whenever they go to work, and it will be evaluated on their evaluation worksheet by their employers. For example, if teens have missed class, they would be mark for absence and it will later affect their grade. Being resposible in early ages is not very easy, some of them need to take time to work on what they are lacking of. Working will make teens feel more confident in life especially in their job performance. Having responsiblity while performing the task is important because teens know what they should and should not do that will help them avoid making mistake at work or it will lead them to satisfy the customers. In fact, students can use what they have been taught in class and apply it to their job skills because studying and practicing always come along way. The more the teens practices, the more they learn from work experiences. No matter how old they are, as far as student...
Imagine dropping out of school and soon your relationships with family, friends, and significant others start failing. What would you do? Many young Americans are dropping out of school, which causes many consequences in many aspects of their lives. Relationships of dropouts are ruined because they have limited education. High school dropouts have little to no luck finding a job. There are many advantages to raising the high school dropout age to 18. Dropping out of high school should be banned because it has many long-term consequences for individuals and society.
Working a job while in college can give a student great time management skills. The years of work experience can also lead the student to being successful to getting another job and having good business skills. Research has shown that working less than 20 hours can actually help give a student an edge in college when compared to a student who does not work at all. "Part-time jobs seem to improve academic performance. Research shows students who work no more than 20 hours a week have higher grades and are more likely to graduate college than both those who don 't work at all and those who put in too many hours." Having a job can greatly help out with future financial issues as
As one young person was heard to remark, “You can’t get a job without experience, and you can’t get experience without a job.” That dilemma can be overcome, however, by starting work early in life and by accepting simpler jobs that have no minimum age limit and do not require experience. Jobs Teens Can Do Begin early at jobs that may not pay especially well but help to establish a working track record: delivering newspapers, babysitting, mowing lawns, assisting with gardening, and the like. Use these work experiences as springboards for such later jobs as sales clerks, gas station attendant, fast-food worker, lifeguard, playground supervisor assistant, and office staff assistant (after you have developed basic office skills). As you progress through these work exploration experiences, try increasingly to get jobs that have some relationship to your career plans.
