Do Transcripts Matter? There are many reasons why transcripts do and do not reflect skills inside and outside of the classroom. In my opinion, transcripts do demonstrate who I am as a student. Transcripts help indicate that I am responsible because I work two jobs, have straight A’s, and am involved with outside and school related clubs. Firstly, my transcript reflects my skill sets and abilities by working two jobs. Working as a teenager can be very stressful and hard. Majority of teens might agree that having a job while in high school is tough considering homework and just life in general. While working in school, you have to understand your priorities and make sure your time is being spent wisely. Making time for things is not always easy either. Being in a club takes dedication and hard work. If a student can not dedicate themselves to the club in which they are enlisted in, then it proves that the student is not interested enough in the club or are not mature enough to take on the responsibility of dedicating themselves to that club. Many students could agree with the fact that being involved in extracurricular activities such as a club does hold a large amount of liability. This is so because a student’s main focus should be their grades. If a student does not focus enough on their grades they will eventually start to fail. When a student can focus on their grades and have the motivation and commitment to a club it reveals the level of maturity of the student has. North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) President and CEO Pete Smithhisler recently stated, “often, arguments both for and against the fraternity experience focus on personal experience and anecdotal information” (Pendry, 2010, para. 2). The persistence of these ar- guments was most recently affirmed in a New York Times column (2011) asking experts to comment on the question, “Should Colleges Ban Frater- nities?” Further, research about the legal risks associated with fraternities on campus has done little to convince the public of the value of such organi- zations (e.g., Elkins, Helms, & Pierson, 2003; Hennessy & Huson, 1998), neither have popular books (e.g., DeSantis, 2007; Nuwer, 2001; Robbins, 2005), nor highly trafficked websites (e.g., http://totalfratmove.com/) that showcase the detrimental aspects of membership. Yet, students continue to join.
Coming into college most students struggle to find a place where they fit in. Greek life provides individuals the opportunity to find people that are similar to them and share the same values as they do. In the article “Living in Your Letters…” is it said that the values of your organization are imposed on you even if you do not believe the same. Many organizations may not tell you their values before entering. Finding out critical information about something before joining is important. Once signing the bid card individuals are agreeing to follow all of their policies whether agreeing with them or not. Many people do not realize what they are getting into and this could cause them problems within their fraternity or sorority. Also it could cause problems with the national councils. High school can be a very terrifying and a frustrating place to cope with. Students have to worry about fitting in and finding somewhere they truly belong. In order to find that place of belonging students can join clubs and interact with other students with the same interests as them. Clubs help students not only make lifelong friendships, but also develop skills they can take with them throughout their life and career. To me, extracurricular activities are not just clubs that I participate in to make my college application look more “full” and “impressive.” I participate in them because I enjoy being a part of them. An extracurricular that I am very passionate about is band. While I have played the piano since I was five, I wanted to be a part of a group of people that share the same passion for music as I do. Band has two seasons, marching and concert season, and I am a section leader for both of them. During marching season I am in charge of teaching the freshmen how to march, teaching them how to play their instrument, and teaching them the basics of marching season and what to expect. I am present at all of the auditions, camps, and practices, and I help anyone that is in need of it. Since I am in percussion, we have auditions to see what instrument we will be on during marching season. I chose to stay on my instrument from last year to improve on my technique and playing, as well as to help the incoming freshmen that will be new to the instrument. Since I am the front ensemble (a part of the percussion section) section leader, I assigned the music, I moved all of the instruments outside (along with the help of fellow percussionists), and I lead practices for my section. When there are less kids, there is a greater opportunity for kids to be involved. They can be in several sports, performing arts, or any group they desire. I was involved in volleyball, football managing, basketball, track, cheerleading, softball, choir, and student council. I was always busy with projects or practices “promotes an overall feeling of unity and social solidarity (Schaefer 2016:18). Activities and “sports serve as a safety value for other participants and spectators, who are allowed to shed tension and aggressive energy in a socially acceptable way” (Schaefer 2016:18). At big schools, not every kids has a chance to be involved and so they have to get their anger out some other way, which can lead to bad things. Since I have been involved in many activities and had ways to relieve my anger I do not need another way; therefore, I have not gotten into bad situations. I am satisfied that I haven’t missed out on an activity that I have wanted to do because of my school. Sadly, this does not happen in all schools. Many large schools do not give the students the same chances because there is more competition. At these schools, kids have to compete to be on an extracurricular team. On the other hand, I was raised to be very independent. So, once I got a chance to start working, I did. When I was fifteen I started by working in the summer hoeing beans with my mom and sister. Working every summer in the scorching hot sun; I came to appreciate my education. The summer after my junior year I started working with BLM through a program called Southern Idaho Bio-Control. In the program we gathered data of places with noxious weeds. The last job I had been in was at Joann’s Fabric and Craft Store. That was my first and actual job. I had to quit because of my tight schedule with school, but in it I learned to strengthen my soft skills. As I said before, working in the hot sun for hours that seemed like days and the encouraging words of my parents telling me to take the opportunities that come by, I learned to appreciate my education. As for my development in high school; I was part of BPA (Business Professionals of America) for four years and part of NHS (National Honor Society) for three years. This study will investigate the impact of extra curricular activities that require a daily commitment over an extended period of time, greater than a month. Athletics is the dominant after school activity that requires a daily commitment; therefore, this study will involve student athletes as well as students who are involved in other extra curricular activities.
