Discrimination is defined as the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race or sex. This treatment is prevalent in areas such as media, sports, and especially the work place. Most women make less than men and have smaller wages; this is largely due to discrimination.
Women, on average, make less than men in every state in the United States (Coukos), and there are many factors that influence how large the gap is. For example, the average woman earns 77 cents for every dollar a man makes; however single women earn 57 cents per married man’s dollar, and women of color make far less than white males earning almost 22% less than their male counterpart (Cooper). Because it is illegal, people argue that it will never happen. By this logic, people never steal because it is against the law, but this isn’t true. People still commit crimes and companies still pay women less because of their gender. Some ask why women don’t do anything if they know they are getting paid less. There are several answers to this question, one being that some simply do not know they are getting a smaller paycheck. Some companies refuse to discuss wages with their female employees, and some are even threatened like Lilly Ledbetter, a woman with firsthand experience of payment discrimination, who “was told [she would] be fired if [she] shared salary information at work,” (Ledbetter). Although women are allowed to sue their company if they know they are not being fairly paid, only 12% of those that sue their employer win their case (Cooper). Women are being denied an attempt at fair treatment and those who do not win their case are then put in danger of being demoted or even fired. These situations are what prolong the wage gap between men and women of the same occupation. Furthermore, it is believed that women suing their employers “would create a disincentive for firms to hire women” (Perry). The system is set up for women to make less money and many cannot do anything about it. They cannot discuss their wages, gain information on other salaries, or even sue their employer without fearing the loss of their job, yet people still continue to believe there are only logical reasons for unequal
Because enforcement of the laws is complaint driven and most of the information needed to prove a complaint is held by employers, these laws lack the ability to completely rid America of discriminatory pay practices. In addition, the Equal Pay Act does not allow women to file class-action lawsuits, and it provides very insubstantial damages. Wage Secrecy Hurts Women Part of the problem is that wage data are largely kept secret in America, so women and minorities can be underpaid without knowing it. Employers frequently have policies that forbid workers from discussing their salaries, even though these policies are unfair and sometimes unlawful. In addition, because women often don't know what a job truly pays, she can undervalue herself when negotiating a new salary (and that can label her as an underachiever).

Throughout the world, discrimination in all forms has continued to be a constant struggle; whether it’s racial, gender based, religion, beliefs, appearance or anything that makes one person different from another, it’s an everyday occurrence. A major place that discrimination is occurring at is in the workplace. One of the largest problems discrimination issues is believed to be gender. Women, who have the same amount of experience as men are not getting paid at the same rate as men, these women also are equally trained and educated. This shouldn’t be happening in today’s society for the fact the society lived in today is suppose to be more accepting. Men are viewed as being more popular, valuable and having higher powers than women. The reality of wage differences between men and women is that above all changes women continue to earn less than men. The gender wage gap is the average difference between men and women's aggregate hourly earnings. Women who are equally trained and educated, and with the same experience, are getting paid way less than men.
Nowadays, most women remain unaware that their employers underpay them. Women cannot argue for higher wages if they do not know they earn less than their male equivalents. Each employee sharing their salary will allow women to detect if they are earning less than their male colleagues with little difficulty. This will give women the tools needed to argue for a higher pay rate, and will help lower the wage gap. If a female worker goes to her boss with statistical evidence that she earns less than her male associates, the chances that her boss will award her a higher salary significantly increase. For many years in United States, equal salary pay for women has been a major issue that women have been fighting for decades. This began back in World War II, when the National Labor Board urged equalize the salary rates for women with the same rates that males were getting of the same professions. Discrimination at work is a touchy issue. Most people, if not all, have experienced some sort or form of it and they ignored it, quit, or got fired from their job. Women tend to be more emotional than men and when women are judged and discriminated they are offended by it immediately. Also, the fact of women getting a lower income than men for the same job is almost unbelievable. It is very important to be concerned on the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. According to AAUW, women are making 77 percent of what men make. This rate hasn’t changed since 2002 (Hill, 2013). Statistics show that women will never make as much as men due to the thought of never being comparable to men (Williams, 2013).
For many decades, women have faced inequalities in the workforce. At one point, they were not allowed to work at all. Although women's rights have improved and are now able to work alongside men, they are still treated unfairly. According to the 2012 U.S. Census, women’s earnings were “76.5 percent of men’s” (1). In 2012, men, on average, earned $47,398 and women earned only $35,791.
In today’s society, Women perform similar jobs to men. Whether it’s blue or white collar jobs, women are always present and thriving for success balancing a life of business and family. In the job market, some are graduates of the best schools and have interned at the best firms, but are still not compensated as equally as men. Following the recent comments by the CEO of Microsoft concerning women asking for raises and how they should trust the system to install equality, the issue seems to be still present, and women’s work is not rewarded similarly to men’s.
In today’s society, it is an understatement that women have come a long way from earlier generations in achieving gaining equal rights with men. Gender roles have evolved greatly throughout history; women can even be known as the breadwinners. However, discrepancies still exist when it comes to equal pay for equal work. This issue has the potential to have an impact on all women including myself, as I hope to one day join the workforce and become a financially independent businesswoman. While some argue that the issue is not relevant to today’s society there are still cases where women’s pay does not match up to men for doing the exact same work.
