Misguided Hello, we are Jonathan Ayub and Eliase Esparza, we are currently seniors at Rancho High School and are here to talk to you about todayś misguided generation. In today's generation, young teens follow the footsteps of arrogant, conceited, narcissist celebrities, usually because they don’t fit in. Such as in the article “Honor Code” David Brooks said, “People who don't fit in this cultural ideal respond by disengaging and rebelling.” Therefore, the American culture in today’s society is based off of careless pop stars, who end up influencing young teens with bad examples of how to function in society. These pop stars’ behavior becomes a trend for young boys and girls and influence the wrong act of movements among them. We hear by withstand the movement of America’s current cultural effects and will assist today’s youth to take a stand and speak out. Such as in the article “Transforming Silence into Language and Action”, Audre Lorde said, “My silences have not protected me. Your silence will not protect you.” …show more content…
These young teens around the ages of 12 and 13 commit the way they live their life the same way pop stars do, especially the boys. These boys believe they’re meant to be more and better than others. Such as in the article, “His Politeness Is Her Powerlessness”, Deborah Tannen quoted, “Granted, women have lower status than men in our society.” Celebrities are usually older and can do more things that are appropriate for their ages. When children see the way they act on the social media, they want to be just like them. Therefore, they contradict their actions and start drinking or smoking, ruining their lives in the
The authors both making sweeping statements about the political nature of the United States, but Ames addresses a more concentrated demographic of American society than Hedges. The latter points the finger at the venal egotism of celebrity culture for entrancing the public into complacency, and at America’s political leaders for orchestrating the fact, but he also places substantial blame on the people at-large for allowing themselves to be captivated by the entertainment industry. Ames discusses an issue in which the Millennial generation stands as the focal point, but she speaks directly to the teachers of these adolescents due to their position of influence. Although today’s youth are proven to possess a spark of political energy through their own volition—displayed through their generation-wide interest in dystopian literature—an environment of learning and in-depth analysis provides the best opportunity for the novels’ underlying calls-to-action to strike a chord with their young
Social inequality has been prevalent in modern-day America, where you could get picked on for just wearing the wrong brand or hairstyle. This occurs the most upon people who are struggling to adjust to adulthood; teenagers. Social inequality has and still is affecting teenagers across the world, and writers are writing about this problem in order to raise awareness and to change the view of the public. These authors write about example in which the inequality is demonstrated, hoping to present a different perspective and to motivate the reader against social inequality. However, not enough awareness has been raised to help prevent it. This is working, but not quickly, but it shows that things like books and music can help to raise awareness,
One of the major misconceptions unfairly given to our teenagers is that the world owes them. Stepping into life thinking that a cushy lifestyle, 50,000 dollar a year job, and a house will be handed to them strictly because they are "cool" is setting the future of our country up for a huge pitfall. After all, being "cool" in high school afforded them a great deal. This idea keeps our teens from striving to become all they can be on their own. They are then left in their mid-twenties with little to no education, no skills, and extremely unhappy because everything taught to them growing up is now proving to be blatantly wrong. Realizing that being popular doesn't get the same response any more can be devastating. So we now end up with a generation that has spent precious learning years working on popularity, instead of developing skills and gaining knowledge. Our teenagers need to know that they can become, and should strive to be, whatever is in their hearts to be. Then, and only then will we produce an educated society who can earn the lifestyle that they so desire.
Have you ever met someone who acted just as teens are stereotyped? Not many people have because they do not exist. Real teens are poorly portrayed in the media and are the complete opposite of their stereotypes. Books and TV shows make teens out to be wild or crazy, irresponsible and out of control. One hardly ever hears about teen-heroes. Instead, newspapers and magazines are plastered with stories of teens and crime. And while looking at commercial billboards and other related media, the regular teen seems to be sex-crazed and image-obsessed.
Why is that all blogs or media sites only pay attention to the bad behavior? We see videos of famous people getting drunk, doing drugs, and even being disrespectful. Eventually, we see this domino effect on young girls, they start being rebellious, start to talk back to their parents even go to parties and drink. Nowadays, celebrities are seen as role models to these kids. What kind of example are these celebrities providing to teenagers when they can barely control their life. Role models are supposed to be someone you admire, someone you look up to and try and follow their examples. Not someone who lives a fake life and you barely know. As stated in an article called “Why this generation is so completely obsessed with the idea of Celebrity” Adam Pliskin explains the real reason to why we follow celebrities as much as we do. This is because we secretly want fame ourselves.
While the SNSs can be used for positive changes in the world, often times they are used for promoting unethical behavior, such as dishonesty, stealing, and drug use. Many celebrities and people online display a lavish, reckless lifestyle. They boast about all the money they possess on Twitter, post a picture of themselves smoking on Instagram, and record Snapchats of countless hours of partying. While these acts alone are not considered unethical, they encourage teenagers to life the same lifestyle. The problems begin when these viewers go to extremes in order to obtain the same possessions. For instance, some teenagers can fall into selling drugs or robbing stores to have the same money and luxurious belongings. Teenagers are quick to find an ‘easy way of living’ that is unethical and supports the lifestyle they desire. In a study about the influence of smoking and alcohol on adolescents, researchers (Fujimoto, Huang, Soto, and Valente, 2014) note, “This supports previous findings that SNS use alone does not pose risks, rather it is the content exchanged through SNSs that trigger behavioral influences” (p7). Teenagers must be responsible about the type of accounts they follow on social networking sites. Constantly seeing famous people behaving recklessly can subconsciously pressure teenagers into acting the same way. Another
So many young people go into the entertainment business. Most of them do not know that without a support system to keep them grounded and stable their mental development can be compromised. The society that we place so high in our culture and deem worthy of such high praise, eat our children alive. They grow too fast, have to defend themselves constantly, and are watched around the clock. As a society, we must take a look at what we are doing to the people in the entertainment industry.
First of all, most celebrities aren’t good role models. They can “mind control” kids with a wave of their hands! For instance, imagine a world with little, innocent kids copying Ke$ha’s and Justin Beiber’s every move. Celebrities can have all kinds of bad influencing on children, teens, and even adults! Imagine those once innocent kids using foul language, smoking, and using illegal drugs! Did you know that 9 % of all pop, 14% of all rock, 20% of all R&Bhip-hop, 36 % of all country, and 77% of all rap have highly censored content in them? That i...
Since ancient times, celebrities have always been looked up to as gods—someone better than ‘regular’ people. In his short essay response, Collin Palmer feels as if our obsessions are being falsely exaggerated. In reality, most obsessions aren’t as bad as Deborah King makes them out to be. Although Collin Palmer did not address how admiration may guide teenagers down the wrong path (that's not their own), I concur that many teenagers today do not let celebrities change who they are and their future.
Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Marilyn Monroe, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, and Lil Wayne are some of the most idolized celebrities in today’s society. People worship celebrities, not because of the good morals they may possess, but because of their fame. We canonize celebrities despite the fact their music encourages use of drugs and alcohol, the abuse of women, and they dress slatternly. There are many luminaries, deceased or living, who are good role models who are often overlooked because they are not at the top of the charts. When you look at whom most teens idolize, you should realize just how bad of an influence they have over their fans.
Many believe that celebrities have a negative impact on society and teens, where they are seen as role models. Role models are celebrities, such as athletes, singers, actors, or can even be teens parents. Celebrities are a huge part of how society is seen and what is put on social media 24/7, and although some teens believe that celebrities make good role models by influencing charity work, the bad behavior that celebrities exhibit outweighs the positive. Celebrities do not make good role models due to bad, inappropriate, or illegal behavior. On the other hand, celebrities also should not be expected to act a certain way just so that they can teach kids how to act and have the responsibility to act like parents. A good reputation is important, but not when it
Celebrities carry so much influence on young individuals today. These prominent celebrities and their influence in social media are apparent. Inevitably teens are given the opportunity to follow short term relationships, drugs, ridiculous fights and alcohol consumption, exhibited by the many celebrities admired today, viewing this as an ideal lifestyle. But in many cases not all celebrities demonstrate detrimental actions to the youth some have promoted wonderful deeds
One big problem with today's youth is that the majority does not fear the consequences of drugs. In addition, they are increasingly using illicit drugs and almost regard drugs as the popular thing to do. There are countless movies out where today's youth is portrayed as drug users. Even if it is not a drug based movie, there is at least one comment on, reference to, or portrayal of the use of drugs by all types of people. The worst part about it is that it is not only the stereotype drug user in these movies that is using the drugs. In fact, in several of the pop culture movies that have been released in the past few years it is the most popular kids in school that are using the drugs. For instance in the movie "Clueless," at a party, Cher and the other popular kids smoke marijuana and make it sound like it is all right to do. This portrayal of not only the slackers, but also the cool kids in today's society using drugs is a big influence on today's youth that using drugs is ok. Using drugs is irresponsible, unh...
Pop culture is a reflection of social change, not a cause of social change” (John Podhoretz). It encompasses the advertisements we see on T.V, the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, and it’s the reason Leonardo DiCaprio has not won an Oscar yet. It defines and dictates the desires and fears of the mainstream members of society and it is so ingrained into our lives that it has become as natural as breathing. Moreover, adults never even bat an eyelash at all the pop culture and advertising that surrounds them since it has become just another part of everyday life. Pop culture is still somewhat seen as entertainment enjoyed by the lower class members of society but pop culture standards change over time.
Even though Some Hollywood entertainment can teach teen’s moral values and lessons, Hollywood makes teens reckless because teens think if it can happen in the movies it can happen in reality and teens want to do what the ''big'' actors do. Entertainment media, in all of its various forms, has had a tremendous impact on how we should think, perform and desire to be. The public are lead to believe the movies, TV shows, etc. are all real happenings. “The Hollywood industry is one of the most powerful and influential enterprises in the world, its visual voice heard around the globe” (Lowson).
