Currently, in America there is an and ongoing debate regarding school uniforms in public schools. School uniforms are becoming extremely popular among public schools. Students and most parents don’t necessarily agree with school uniforms; they may think that school uniforms take away the right of self-expression, but it doesn’t. School uniforms aren’t a negative thing to have. Uniforms may limit what students have to choose from to wear each day to school, but it doesn’t limit them from getting an education. Enforcing uniforms can allow students to stay focused on their schoolwork. A student may have a limited variety of clothing options, but he/she can still add his/her own touch of expression to the uniform. Students can choose what type of hair style they want along with what accessories they want to put in their hair. Shoes can help to express individuality when wearing uniforms because of how colorful they can be. Students can create their own type of style without breaking dress code. Requiring school uniforms doesn’t mean a student’s rights are taken away since he/she can’t wear the latest trends. “The Seventeen and TeenVogue websites listed numerous suggestions for students on how to add their personal style to school uniforms, including hairstyle options, the use of nail polish, and the addition of colorful accessories such as satchels, scarfs and socks” (ProCon). This shows that accessorizing doesn’t take away self-expression. “When all students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in with their peers; thus, they can concentrate on their schoolwork.” (ProCon).
