It seems like as the generations go on kids and young teens become introduced to technology at younger ages. Take a look around at your local grocery store or at a shopping mall and they always seem to have some type of smartphone, tablet, or electronic playing game in their hands. Technology has advanced so rapidly, that families have barely noticed the drastic impact and changes to their family structure and lifestyles. A Kaiser Foundation study from 2010 showed that elementary aged children use on average 7.5 hours per day of entertainment technology, 75 percent of these children have TV’s in their bedrooms, and 50 percent of North American homes have the TV on all day. A 2010 report indicates children spend on average 7:38 hours a day on media (Kaiser Foundation). If you put this into another perspective kids should be getting around 8-11 hours of sleep nightly and if you think about how much screen time 7 hours is you realize 7 into the 8-11 hours of sleep would only leave about 4 hours which is not a lot. Technology’s influence is affecting kids thinking and causing their brains to wire differently than past generations. Technology is affecting kids negatively in more ways than one and parents need to be aware of the specific consequences that follow with the increase use of technology their children are using. They start to mimic what they see on TV because it seems like the right thing to do. They are disconnecting from the real world and creating their own space and environment revolving around technology. With this claim the other side would argue that technology weighs out more positive effects to children's behavior than negative. The Baltimore Sun a large daily newspaper states that,
Kids learning and using technology at younger age is beneficial due to our society plummeting into a huge world full of technology driven products. First-graders use tablets daily during math and reading instruction and use apps like Kaymbu, a tool that allows students to take photos of their work to save to a personal portfolio shared with families on a weekly basis. Many classrooms are using technology as learning tools to help children. It’s easier to learn things at a younger age than as an adult trying to basically learn a new skill.
Again the other side isn’t seeing the real consequences that come along with technology being introduced to young people at too young of ages. Children should not be allowed to have too much free access due to too much screen time exposure, or left online unattended for too long due to the negative things children could see
“Get off your phone.” “I’m taking that laptop away.” Many children have dealt with their parents barging into their rooms and telling them to get off their electronics. Parents believe it is not healthy and therefore should be restricted. The two articles, “Blame Society, Not the Screen Time” by Dana Boyd and “Don’t Limit Your Teen’s Screen Time” by Chris Bergman, both talk about how parents should not limit their kid’s screen time. Both authors are writing to parents of children who they think spend way too much time on their electronics. However, Dana Boyd has a much better compelling argument for not restricting teenager’s screen time. Boyd has a much better appeal to both audiences. She manages to employ better uses of both pathos and logos
Maggie Jackson’s other blog, “Does Self-Control come in an App?” Digital Natives don’t know any difference by going to Facebook or playing games on technology, but it could have a serious impact on them if they get addicted. Kaiser Family Foundation said, the average 8-18-year-old spends more than seven hours and 38 minutes on entertainment media on a typical day. Half of those people use media when doing homework. To help address this problem, we need to teach children to respect the integrity and set up rules for their media use.
Television, or screen time, has become a large part of today's society. Whether it's by way of smart-phones, a television, a computer, or a tablet, screen time has negative effects on the cognitive ability of children and adolescents. It has even been proven that it can lead to Alzheimer's disease when a person, in the age range of 20-60 years old, views an hour more than the recommended amount of screen time a day (Sigman 14). In children, the amount of screen time viewed has a relationship with the likelihood of developing a deficit in his attention span; the longer a child views screen time, the more likely he is to be diagnosed with an attention disorder. Screen time, or television, can cause attention disorders and other problem with cognitive abilities in children and adolescents that effect the education they can comprehend.
Technology is an ever-growing phenomenon that shouldn’t be restricted for kids during the day but should be limited at night in order for them to have proper sleep. Parent’s should restrain their children’s screen time at night due to how a technology prevents any efficient sleep. In the article, “Negative Effects Of Too Much Screen Time For Kids”, Jeffery Green states that because of this blue light, children will be “wide awake even when the electronic screen is shut off” (Green 2). If children aren’t able to properly sleep, they won’t be able to do well in school, and will generally have a bad attitude the next morning. In Alia Wong’s article she talks about how Rueben Loewy makes some key points on technology and education in kids. He makes a claim that the digital revolution has dramatically changed the way kids perceive reality. Wong inserts a quote from a principal researcher at Microsoft Research explaining the reasoning and it says ““ the rhetoric of digital natives’” is dangerous because it distorts the realities of kids’ virtual lives, the result being that they don’t learn what they need to know about online living.” Another claim that was made was that kids are getting a distorted view of the digital world. The article says that Parents and adults are throwing all these things at the kids about the digital world. kids are being told that the digital world is only full of cyberbullies and pedophiles. The article supported this by putting a survey from the 2012 Pew Research survey that of roughly 800 U.S parents and their teenage children found that eight in ten parents are concerned about
Almost every child between the ages of eight and twelve are getting cell phones. The average home in America has as many televisions as they do people. Only 20% of American homes do not have a computer. Technology is quickly becoming a new way of life. The amount of time people are on their devices is growing rapidly. According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for on average about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not realized yet how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems.
As disclosed in the article, The Impact of Technology on the Developing Child, Chris Rowan acknowledges, “Rather than hugging, playing, rough housing, and conversing with children, parents are increasingly resorting to providing their children with more TV, video games, and the latest iPads and cell phone devices, creating a deep and irreversible chasm between parent and child” (par. 7). In the parent’s perspective, technology has become a substitute for a babysitter and is becoming more convenient little by little. It is necessary for a growing child to have multiple hours of play and exposure to the outside world each day. However, the number of kids who would rather spend their days inside watching tv, playing video games, or texting is drastically increasing. The impact and implications of technology tools on young children has been studied and researched through the Let’s Move Childcare initiative and results concluded that little to no “screen time” is preferred for children under the age of two. In a article that I read by Kathryn Doyle it say that more than 90 percent of girls and 80 percent boys reported using a cell phone in the hour before bed, and laptops were almost as common. So this cause students to be tired in school, and makes it hard to concentrate during classes. But, this doesn’t only affect teens, it also affects younger children.
In United States, “Children watch 4 hours of television every day, 28 hours a week and, sometimes, 10 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Before their 18th birthday, children may view 25,000 hours of television” (Ni Chang 85). Nowadays, technology has been developed and used in many different ways. Many children spend large amount of time on IPad, smart phone, and computer. Clearly, television has played an important role in most of the younger age group’s life. As a parent, one of the biggest concerns about the influence that television has on the children is that they tend to become aggressive while they watch a lot of violent program. Communicating and engaging with one and other is limited because television has destroyed communication among family and removed children from the social interaction. Parents or guardians must take the proper steps to become a more effective role model by changing their own habits and lifestyles. In addition, people who have internet disorder suffer from this condition.
