Ever wondered why celebrities need bodyguards? No, it is not just because they can afford it and every celebrity has one. In some cases, there may be a touch of status-symbol vanity involved, but generally the rich and powerful have to protect their riches, their property and their person from all manner of assault. The famous are often the targets of kidnappers and crackpots: a bodyguard could have protected the Lindbergh baby, or maybe John Lennon would still be around if he had not fired his bodyguard. Perhaps it is a sign of the times; in this age of terror lurking round every corner, well-known faces could be more exposed to attack. The bodyguard has come a long way from the heavyweight, rather thug-like image that we see in old Hollywood films. Sheer bulk and strength have given way to training, programming and strategy. Modern-day bodyguards are highly-skilled and often specialised.
