The Use of Performing Enhancing Drugs in Athletes In recent history there has been a debate on whether or not athletes should be allowed to use performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). In most professional and collegiate level sports PEDs are illegal for athletes to use. Should athletes be allowed to use PEDs? Athletes should not use performance enhancing drugs because of bad short-term side effects, long-term health issues, and lack of competition. First, there are many negative short-term side effects associated with PED usage in athletes. The PEDs can cause severe acne that can cover the body. This acne can be severe enough that scarring may also occur. Mood changes have also been known to be associated

The general population can choose to use these substances through the power of choice. Athletes should have this same freedom to choose whether or not they want to use PEDs. The long-term benefits of PED usage could include prolonging a season or career for an athlete that may have an injury. It can also benefit the athlete by providing increased strength and muscle growth. It ultimately is a choice to “determine if the athletes prefer the gains in performance allegedly provided by the use of steroids, along with the increased risk of harm to the alternative of less risk and worse …show more content…
The side effects and health issues alone should be enough to determine that the PED usage ban should remain in effect. The short-term risk of mood swings is of significant concern. The athlete could become angry over small issues and may even be violent toward others. The long-term health risks are especially scary and concerning. It is understood that athletes can choose to take PEDs but it should not be a free for all. It should not be allowed that athletes can suffer from the long-term effects because we make usage more available. The long-term risks of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and liver tumors are scary. The competition level should remain as it is today and should not be diminished due to widespread PED usage. It would not be the same watching sporting events if you know the athletes are only that good because they use PEDs. It is also concerning that young children would think it is acceptable to use PEDs because their role models all use
The role of PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) in world of sports has been the center of much controversy and debate dating back to the beginning of the Olympics, that has captured a considerable amount of attention within the past century. The revelation of PED use by star athletes has been a repeating occurrence in the world of professional sports. These allegations quickly turn legacies into scandals, for what one person once stood for throughout their career is now quickly overshadowed by the insert of a needle. The question then is, what if they were made legal? what would the reaction be and how would it change each respective league if PEDs were now allowed on the playing field? The use of these supplements has found its place in sports in a very timely and real matter, with many in opposition towards the use because of the growing concerns surrounding them, health and morally. In a closer examination of the purpose of professional sports, it is clear that the use of PEDs only bolster its purpose: allowing professional athletes to push to reach the peak of human perfection resulting in increased performance and success in sports from an entertainment perspective.
Performance Enhancing Drugs should not be allowed in sports. PEDs are a form of cheating. Not only are they cheating, but they can harm the athlete's body too. There are many long-term health risks we don't even know about! Finally, PED’s make the game unfair because the kids with natural talent are not able to showcase their great skills.
The truth is, they do produce side effects and irregular muscle growth. By banning the use of performance enhancing drugs, just like steroids, sports competition will have a much healthier and fairer environment to participate in. Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports The use of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs is a common trend that is currently fascinating athletes all over the world. Athletes who are using these drugs are damaging the sport and harming their bodies at the same time.
Sports is one of the most popular forms of entertainment we have today. Whether it’s football, basketball, soccer, baseball, etc., fans are willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money in order to watch sports. There are few issues in the world of sports. But there is one issue that stands out, steroids. Although steroids may increase strength, stamina and athleticism, they are incredibly harmful to your body and should never be used. Still, some athletes persist in taking them, knowing that these substances provide a physical advantage. Although this is true, steroids can cause serious physical and psychological side effects.
Some of the physical, mental, and emotional problems they cause may shock many. Performance enhancing drugs harm more than help you. Some of the effects of taking the drug are increased chances of Acne, Male pattern baldness, Liver Damage, and stunted gr... ... middle of paper ... ... for decades; people may say that the use of steroids has been nothing but a nuisance to the pro industry.
“We have to make some radical move to get the attention of everyone. Cheaters can't win and steroids have put us in the position that it's OK to cheat.” (Lou Brock). Steroids in professional sports has became a major issue and has yet to be justified. Steroids boost the intensity of the game and provide the athletes with more agility and skill to play the game, but should it be fair to allow them? This would give some players an advantage in their sport over the players who reject the drugs. If drugs are illegal in the common world, then why should athletes be able to get away with performance enhancing drugs in sports. Should professional athletes be allowed to use these drugs without breaking the rules?
Abstract: With the increase of competition has also come the need to become bigger and stronger than the opponent. The use of steroids among athletes has caused the focus of the game to change. No longer does an athlete want to win by doing their best, but they want to become bigger and have an advantage over the opponent. Ultimately, all athletes feel that they need to use performance-enhancing drugs to compete at the same level. Despite all of the warnings and information on performance-enhancing drugs, athletes continue to use them and overlook the potential health risks associated with steroids.
Most people believe that steroids are a false measurement of an athletes ability, and others believe that steroids are good because athletes can become stronger and make their sports more exciting to watch. This is a very important issue today because athletes today are using steroids to gain an unfair advantage over the other athletes. Steroids can have many health effects on your body. Many doctors say not to use steroids because of the possible long-term effects. A source from a reputable website says, “It is speculated that possible long-term effects may include adverse cardiovascular effects such as heart damage and stroke” (“Steroid Abuse in Today’s Society”).
Many Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition can date back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher and recover at an increased pace. Many athletes are pressured into using PEDs by coaches or managers and are not thoroughly educated the harmful health issues that can come along with taking performance-enhancing drugs. A rising issue is if performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports. I believe that in any professional sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes should continue to be banned because this rule will help to keep athletes from abusing these harmful drugs.
With all the lights and cameras, of course, athletes want more attention than the others and for them steroids is the answer. Steroids not only affect your body physically, but your brain emotionally and that’s why there is a higher risk than thought when it comes to the decision to use steroids or not. For your body, you are essentially quickening its deterioration and actually weakening it while you are trying to strengthen it. It’s a domino effect of future health problems. From
...t these drugs are catastrophic and cause so many diseases and sicknesses that should not happen to an athlete. Athletes will be looked at as superheroes and children would not want to idolize a player that got to where he is because he did drugs. A child wants to look up to a player that beat the odds and worked harder than everyone else. If Performance Enhancing Drugs were legalized and allowed in all professional sports, there would be a lot of deaths, and player that have diseases caused by the drugs they took. Also High school and college players would begin to take it because they would feel like that is the only way to get to the pros. And lastly players would hurt themselves and their teammates and fellow players. PED’s have a lot of potential but not yet. There are too many health defects and we do not want our “heroes” to die from a disease caused by drugs.
In all professional sports in the United States, the use of PEDs are prohibited. However, there is only one acceptation to that rule. If an athlete is injured, prescriptions to certain drugs which are used in recover are allowed. These drugs may consist of certain chemicals that enhance muscle grow. Some athletes have used this to their advantage and have got prescriptions to these drugs for their own personal benefits, will other athletes are using it for recreational purposes. This, however, is not the only way to obtain PEDs; there are also other ways such as buying them from an underground market. Athletes with the intention to cheat will take the risk of using PEDs, since if they are successful they will achieve fame and money.
Reception at Release: Schindler's List was released on December 15, 1993 (). When it was it was widely received as a masterpiece and one of Steve Spielberg's best works ever seen that is sure to “... win over Spielberg skeptics.” (McCarthy). Critics have praised the movie in many areas. From the brilliant acting (Ebert), memorable scenes (McCarthy), and an overall triumphant plot throughout the film (Wilmington).
Performance enhancing drugs, also known as PEDs, are used by many athletes in the sporting world. It seems as if every, or at least most, athletes are using PEDs and are getting caught all the time, even though they are cheating. PEDs need to stay illegal because they are harming everyone involved. One reason that the world of sports should not allow PEDs is because the use of them is giving an unfair advantage and can cause bad side effects. If PEDs were legal, then every athlete would be taking them, then the people who want to be the biggest and the best would take more, resulting in a very violent game.
Performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), are they a problem? Almost every single sport in the world have bans on PEDs and even some prescribed medicine, that boosts performance, to keep their sport as “legitimate” and “clean” as possible. However, in every single sport there’s people willing to take the extra step to win and use PEDs. It’s the desire to win and to be the best that makes them take the extra step. When there’s always people willing to do drug to increase performance.
