1. According to the article, discrimination, lack of upward mobility, lack of transferrable skills and the language barrier all are reasons immigrants pursue self-employment or entrepreneur ventures. Discrimination and the lack of opportunity in the open work place leave immigrants sometimes no choice but to seek other means of income. This also hinders the chance for upward mobility economically. Without employment opportunities that can lead to good paying jobs and ones that could potentially offer advancement being readily available to immigrants, this prevents them from earning a salary that will compensate better than if one were working for one’s self. (Yoon, 1997) The number of immigrants and self-employment has increased .6% from 1984-2015. (Advocacy) In addition to the obstacles listed, the study showed another reason was due to the aging population among business owners.
