I can do anything, you can do. Are boys better than girls? Are girls better than boys? In the article, “Modifying Gender Role Stereotypes in Children” there are three main points that I will touch on in this written assignment. The three main points are: gender stereotypes affect children and their behavior into adolescents and adults, gender equality, and the lack of research done on this topic.
Blue is for boys, and pink is for girls. This is an example of rigid gender stereotyping. For a majority of people, rigid gender stereotyping is quite common, and for most they see no harm. Males develop an alpha male complex, while women settle into the role of damsels in the distress. Furthermore, “Rigid gender role stereotypes have been found in adolescents who report dating violence, and young men who endorse rape-tolerant views are more likely to hold traditional gender role stereotypes, particularly depicting women as inferior and men as in charge.” (Modifying Gender Role Stereotypes in Children. 2011) This hinders us as a society, because it causes many inequalities. If woman stays home to take care of children, she is seen as a good mother, but if a father were to stay home with his children, he would be ridiculed and considered a failure and lazy. Also, another example being, if a mother goes to work and wants to progress in her career, she is seen as selfish. In the video, “William wants a doll”, a young boy expresses he wants a doll to love, hold, and care for. Throughout the video, his parents, more so his father, tries his best to suppress William’s interest in wanting a doll by buying him “typical” boy toys such as a baseball bat and soccer ball. My overall reaction, is prime example of what a majority of people think, the father was right, why would a boy want a doll? By the end of the video, my thoughts somewhat change, but to be honest I felt quite awkward watching the video from start to end. It was quite the learning experience for me, because I have always thought of myself as a very open person. To learn that I, myself, fall into the masses of stereotypical gender schemes made me think that I should do some research and make a change will I still can to help my son become an overall better
Young children are typically raised around specific sex-types objects and activities. This includes the toys that that are given, activities that they are encouraged to participate in, and the gender-based roles that they are subjected to from a young age. Parents are more likely to introduce their daughters into the world of femininity through an abundance of pink colored clothes and objects, Barbie dolls, and domestic chores such as cooking and doing laundry (Witt par. 9). Contrarily, boys are typically exposed to the male world through action figures, sports, the color blue, and maintenance-based chores such as mowing the lawn and repairing various things around the house (Witt par. 9). As a result, young children begin to link different occupations with a certain gender thus narrowing their decisions relating to their career goals in the future. This separation of options also creates a suppresses the child from doing something that is viewed as ‘different’ from what they were exposed to. For instance, boys or men are expected to act and behave in ways that have been considered masculine or associated with masculinity (Seccombe p.104); “men are often assumed to be more aggressive, sexual, unemotional, rational, and task oriented than women” (Seccombe p.93); and thus, action figures, such as Superman, WWE wrestling toys, and Hulk are made for boys to play with. The socialization of children is greatly affected by the toys they are exposed to while growing up. Looking through magazines and walking down the aisles of toy stores it is clear that toy companies are supportive of cultural gender roles biases. Toys designed for girls are commonly found in pink boxes; typically these toys involve housework or taking care of children, for example, dolls and easy bake ovens. On the other hand, “boy” toys are found in blue and black boxes, and a lot of them involve construction and cars.

This idealized image is driven by the patriarchal society that we live in. However, a patriarchal society does not mean that men benefit from this. It also oppresses them.

It 's common knowledge to people in American society that if someone is having a baby girl, it is standard to get them pink clothes and toys, and for boys it is typical to get these things in blue. From this moment on, children are already told what is expected of them when it comes to their gender. This has been tradition in society for decades, but it may have some negative effects on the children that arise from it.
