Sam Bissell English 9 Mrs Burrow 5/16/24. Tybalt's hatred and how it caused Romeo and Juliet’s death. It seems as if everything started going downhill once Tybalt decided to start a mini war. Without the fight, there would be no death, no drama. When people die it tends to put others on edge, when people are on edge, they are less likely to be fond of the idea that marriage is. Some might argue that it wasn't Tybalt that started the downfall, but instead it was Mercutio. While that is a fair point, Tybalt was the one to draw his sword first and take action, he was also the one who was verbally attacking everybody else, “Thou wretched boy, that didn’t consort him here, shalt he with hence”(Page 684). Maybe it was jealousy, maybe he just didn’t like him. For example, on page 681, he says “Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford no better term than this: Thou art a villain”’ (Romeo & Juliet, act 3 scene 1). Maybe he’s like that because he doesn't like the people Romeo associates himself with. Another example of this would be when Tybalt says “‘What are thou drawn among these heartless hinds? Turn thee, Benvolio, look upon thy death.”’ (Romeo & Juliet, act 1 scene 1). So with all of this information it must be a mix of everything, from Tybalt not liking Romeo, to Tybalt just not liking anyone from the montage family. Furthermore, Romeo has not done anything to Tybalt, so that is why Tybalt acted out of pure jealousy. Diving deeper into the jealousy part, maybe he's jealous because of Romeo's looks, or perhaps Romeo's personality. Romeo really doesn't hang around Tybalt that much, so it wouldn't make sense. It would have to be hatred, Tybalt hates Romeo for sneaking into the cavalry’s private party. He tried to have Romeo kicked out but was quickly shut down by Capulet because he did not want any fighting on that night.
