Titanic The Titanic sank over one hundred years ago, yet this historical event continues to fascinate people all over the world. One popular movie about this event was produced by James Cameron on December 19, 1997. It depicted one of the survivors by the name of Rose DeWitt Bukater. The Titanic was a ship that sunk in 1912 on April 14th - 15th in the Atlantic Ocean south of Newfoundland. When the Titanic sank, there were 2,224 and crew members on board. Many of the people lost their lives in this catastrophe. The ship also sank the first time the Titanic went on a cruise . According to Ballard “In July 1986 Robert Ballard and two members of his team descended two and a half miles to the ocean floor in their tiny submarine. One year earlier they had located the wreck of the Titanic. Now they wanted to explore the sunken liner at close range. As they shone their lights on the rusted wreck of the lost ship , the events of that night 74 years earlier seemed to come alive once again” (7). The sinking of the Titanic resulted in many casualties; however, changes to maritime regulations were positive. The Titanic crashed into an iceberg and created a big hole in the ship. There was still space left, so if the lifeboats were filled more lives could have been saved. The ship should have stayed afloat for three days but sunk in less than three hours. It was said that the Titanic was an ¨unsinkable ship” and therefore the crew was extremely unprepared for the crash which led to many mistakes and cost many lives. Edward Smith did try to avoid ice danger by altering the ship's course. The ocean waters were 28 degrees fahrenheit, below the freezing point but not frozen because of the water salt
