One flew over the cuckoo's nest written by Ken Kesey follows the narration of Chief Bowman. Bowman, son of an Indian chief (hence the name Chief) and a white mother is held in a mental institution that is dictated by the head nurse Ratcher who plays as the antagonist to the hero figure Mcmurphy. Mcmurphy is first brought into the ward to be diagnosed for psychopathy. Although Mcmurphy is a prisoner for having an affair with a fifteen year old and having multiple violations against the law for fighting, he plays as the hero throughout the story by giving the patients a voice and standing up to nurse Ratcher. This makes her furious and dislike Mcmurphy as it makes her control over the other patients weaker. “‘You are under the jurisdiction of me...the staff’ she’s balling up a fist, all those red-orange fingernails burning into her palm. ‘Under jurisdiction and control’” (Pg. 127-128) States nurse ratcher in anger when she notices she is losing control due to Mcmurphy and ultimately her need to control makes her the “bad guy” to the plot. This need to control leads her to exercise authority over the patients by threatening, making patients turn against each other in group therapy, running a small group of staff who she has dirt on, treating patients on a minute based schedule through day to day bases, but nurse Ratcher’s main method of control is her kind but firm voice which seems emotionless but firm and her word choice. One notable example would be when Mcmurphy refuses to take his medicine she comments “It’s alright nurse if Mcmurphy doesn’t want to take his medicine orally there are other alternatives but he will not like them”.
