The main character, Eleanor Vance, can be seen as the victim of the novel. She ultimately commits suicide, like Maria, because of her susceptibility to the supernatural elements and experiences that happen in the haunted Hill House that Eleanor gets invited to stay at with others to investigate this paranormal phenomenon. Eleanor has been isolated from society because she has taken care of her mother for eleven years. This job has led to Eleanor missing out on many experiences and social interactions that has cause her social awkwardness and withdrawal from society. As in the novel, it states Eleanor “ had spent so long alone, with no one to love, that it was difficult for her to talk, even casually” (Jackson 3). This isolation causes her to make what can be considered a reckless decision to take up Dr. Montague’s offer to stay at Hill House. This then leads to Eleanor’s tragic suicide, which closely resembles the circumstances that lead to Maria’s suicide in The Shadow in the Corner as well. The social isolation that Eleanor experiences causes her to come in contact with supernatural forces and become impacted by them on a deeper level than the other characters in the

The movie that I will be analyzing for this paper is Home Alone. The movie was directed by Chris Columbus and released in 1990. The film follows the dramatic progression of exposition, complication and dénouement. The movie begins with an exposition and tells the audience the location and characters. Kevin McCallister, the main character, and large McCallister family are the first to be introduced in the movie. Other key character also introduced is old man Marley: rumor says that he is a murderer, and the two wet bandits Henry and Marv. The film took place at the McCallister home in Chicago and the neighborhood near the McCallister home. The family is going on a Christmas vacation to Paris the next morning, but the mischievous Kevin caused a milk mess after struggling with his older brother who ate all the cheese pizza. Kevin’s mom then sends Kevin to spend the night in the third floor in which Kevin wishes his family would disappear when he wakes up.
Mary is the next character that is introduced to the reader, and she is a very large part of the story. One day while Mary is at the beach a body washes up on the shore with many cabbages, kettles, and barrels of whiskey. She drags the body to the shore where she lies in the man's arms until he dies. This man was believed to have been from an "other world" and this had a big effect on Mary. She falls in love with this sailor, even though he is dead, and it casts a sort of spell on her. Mary is known to the rest of the village as "away" which means she is enchanted by this other world, the world of the sea. She felt as though her spirit were not in her humanly body anymore, and did not even consider herself Mary anymore. The spirits of the lake had given her a new name, Moira, and that is what she preferred to call herself. The villagers had no hope for, except for Father Quinn.
