“Now I know what it means when they say ‘to pull a Charlie Gordon.” A Charlie Gordon refers to when you do something stupid and this is a huge turning point in the book where he finally notices that he is being made fun of all the time for being dumber than everybody else and not having any friends that are nice.
In the story, Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes, Charlie has a very low level of intelligence until a scientist comes to him with the solution of an operation to make him smart. Once he becomes smart, many situations start to change in his life including, the friends he has, his job, and his relationship to the others in his society.

This quote comes from when Charlie is now becoming smart but he knows what it is to be the dumb person being made fun of so when everyone is making fun of the kid that doesn’t know what he’s doing, Charlie speaks up, saying,
“Shut up! Leave him alone! It’s not his fault he can’t understand! He can’t help what he is!(Keyes 132)”
This is when Charlie is noticing that he doesn’t have all the friends he used to and how much more cruel and mean others in his life are. To relate with the claim, the boy is just like what Charlie was and now something bad happened and he’s noticing how bad it was before and how it is better not being made fun of.
Another craft move used throughout the book is an inciting incident when he notices his friends aren’t as nice as he thought.
At this time, Charlie is thinking to himself whether his friends are really his friends after they start to laugh and make everyone else laugh at him and that they were just using him to be popular.
