White-Tailed Deer
Odocoileus virginianus, is the scientific name of the white-tailed deer ("Species Description: White-tailed Deer"). White-tailed deer are reddish brown in the summer and grayish brown in the winter. They get their name from the white strip of fur they have from the top of their stomachs to the tip of their tails. White-tailed deer can get up to about four to six feet in length. According to Nature Works, "males weigh between 150 and 300 pounds and females weigh between 90 and 200 pounds." The whitetails in the northern part of North America are normally larger than the ones in the southern part. The uniqueness of the white-tailed deer is illustrated through its life cycle, characteristics, habitat, and diet.
To begin, the average life cycle of a deer is about two to five years.

According to The Biology of a Whitetail Deer, "The whitetail deer reach sexual maturity around 12 months of age". Most deer are born during May and June which is six to seven months after mating season ("White-Tailed Deer" National Geographic). Whitetail deer start mating around eighteen months of age. The mating season may also be known as the rut. According to the Nature Mapping Program, "antlers do not serve as weapons against predators, but are used during the mating season, when the males fight to breed with females." When a buck mates with a doe he only stays with her for twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Then the buck will find another doe to breed with during the same rut season ("Deer Biology"). Therefore, deer are polygamous creatures since they have more than two partners. A doe or female deer can give birth to one to three young at one time ("White-Tailed Deer" National Geographic). A fawn or baby deer is born with white spots to help him or her blend in with his or her surroundings. Nature Works states, "female fawns may stay with their mother for two years, but males usually leave after a year". To protect her young from harm, the doe will hide the fawn while she goes to find food. Furthermore, if she has more than one fawn, she hides them all in separate places ("White-tailed Deer" Nature Works). Next, white-tailed deer have many distinct characteristics..
They are an extremely adept species with excellent eyesight, hearing, and agility. According to Island Creek Ecology, "Deer can leap over eight feet high and thirty feet long". Nature Works states, "They can run at speeds of up to 30 miles an hour". Around February, bucks shed their antlers. During the spring, they grow new ones covered in velvet, but then lose the velvet in August (“White-tailed Deer” Island Creek Ecology). According to The Biology of a Whitetail Deer, “The velvet supplies blood to the growing antlers to protect and feed them”. A male deer’s antlers come in when they are one year old. For example, whitetail deer with only a couple of antlers are called spikes. The Biology of a Whitetail Deer states, “in a whitetail buck the antlers typically reach optimal development around 5 to 6 years of age”. Bucks mark their territory by rubbing their antlers against trees. Another characteristic of white-tailed deer is they sleep during the day only for a few hours. Deer make their bed with leaves in the shape of an oval. Also, white-tailed deer will snort or stick their tail up when they are
alarmed. In addition to the life cycle and characteristics of white-tailed deer, their habitat can vary. The white-tailed deer can be found in many parts of North America and few parts of South America. According to Natural Resource Enterprises, this species "prefers an interspersed habitat, including meadows, forested woodlots, brushy areas and croplands". Most whitetail deer live in the same small one square mile area their whole life. Similar, they live in small groups during the year. For example, one type of group is made up of does and fawns. The other group is made up of three to five bucks (“White-tailed Deer” Island Creek Ecology). Coyotes are sometimes a predator of white-tailed deer, but the main ones are dogs and humans. Nature Works states, "because there are not many natural predators, deer populations can sometimes grow too large for their environment". There are some diseases like roundworms that can harm or kill deer (“White-tailed Deer” Nature Works). Also, hunting helps control the deer population problem. Finally, the diet of white-tailed deer is mainly plants; they are herbivores (“White-tailed Deer” Island Creek Ecology). According to Nature Works, "the white-tailed deer is a ruminant and its stomach has four chambers for digesting food". For example, they can eat and digest many things that other animals cannot. They regurgitate their food and re-chew it to help with their digestion. The diet of whitetail deer can change because of habitat (“Deer Biology”). Likewise, they have a different diet during the winter than they do in the summer. During the fall and winter, deer feed on acorns, evergreen, and woody stems. Then, during the spring and summer, they feed on grass, vines, and fruit ("Species Description: White-tailed Deer"). National Geographic states, "occasionally venturing out in the daylight hours, white-tailed deer are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, browsing mainly at dawn and dusk". By around the age of ten, whitetail deer's teeth will wear out and they are no longer able to eat ("Deer Biology"). In conclusion, there are many reasons why the white-tailed deer are such unique animals. They are one of the few animals that can stand up and walk at birth. The white-tailed deer can transmit diseases to humans through a tick such as Lyme disease (“White-tailed Deer” Nature Works). The white-tailed deer are the smallest type of deer in the United States. Also, they are the most popular game animal in North America ("Nature Mapping Animal Facts"). In recent years, people are building houses and moving into deer habitat, which is why an increased number of deer are hit by cars and found lying on the side of the road.
Hey, I didn’t see you there, how are you?I'm just wondering whether or not a big ol' grizzly bear is going to come charging at me at any point in my life, but seeing as grizzly bears are endangered that probably won't happen. In the past, there were thought to be around 50,000 grizzly bears in North America, nowadays they are growing sparse there are estimated to be only around 1800, now not even a 20th of the population in the past. Most of these grizzlies are located in Yellowstone National Park and Alaska, but they can also be found in Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and Montana. Some are thought to be in Washington.
There are too many deer in the Wesselman Woods. The deer have eaten all the flowers and other flora. There have also been 8 car crashes involving deer, this imposes a dangerous threat to the civilians of Evansville. The deer have been invading people’s yards and eating their gardens. The deer are causing many problems that can’t be solved until the deer population is reduced.
amount of game allowed to kill. Today we have an abundance of deer in Kentucky,
The firearm deer season started on Friday, November 15 1996. This was terrible for me because I had to weigh in at two o'clock for a wrestling meet at Muskegon the next day. Even though I had to drive all the way to Muskegon on Saturday morning, I could not stand the idea of not being able to sit out there in the field and just enjoy the outdoors on opening day. I was still determined not to miss opening day, since I had never missed it before. After I weighed in I said the hell with it and hopped in my car and headed for home.
The North American Whitetail is typically 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall at the shoulder, and can range from 100 to 220 pounds. The size of the deer depends on the area you find the deer and how much food there is in that area. The males (or bucks) typically have antlers that they shed seasonally. The females (or does) usually do not have antlers, but can on rare occasions. There are some very definite qualities that make it easy to distinguish the white tail from one of its close relatives, like the mule deer. The whitetail is a reddish brown color in the summer and a grayish brown color in the winter. If you ever see a whitetail in the wild, you will quickly see how they got ...
The author provides information describing the deer population in parts of New Jersey; yet, he does not include any data regarding the population in the rest of the United States, nor does he include any sources of where this information was obtained. A reader may be more
White-tailed deer, along with the rest of the Cervidae family, are facing a possible epidemic. Although the disease has not spread over the entire range CWD is efficiently transmitted between individuals. CWD is to the best of our knowledge 100% fetal and incubation can take a few years allowing for many possible transmissions. There also at this time is no form of vaccine or treatment for infected cervids. Despite efforts being put forth to control CWD, being a free-range family of animals proves control to be extremely difficult.
The deer are easy to spot. In the summer, it’s coat is reddish-brown and in the winter it is buff. All year around its underside and tail are completely white as well as having a white spot on its neck. The prime deer habitat consists of deciduous trees, primarily cottonwood, ash, willow, elm and box elder. However preferred, the woodland cover is not essential to the deer’s survival.

* Perhaps the most noticeable and striking characteristics of a polar bear is its color. The fur shafts themselves are not white. The shafts actually lack pigmentation and are transparent which allows them to scatter and reflect light resulting in ideal camouflage in a world of ice and snow.
Bison bison, or simply bison, have an average body mass of 579 kg. They are herbivores, mainly surviving on prairie grass. Bison are selective grazers, and never remain in one place for long. This means they do not overgraze any one area. The hooves of bison leave indentions in the land where they travel. These indentions in the earth help trap moisture and rain fall necessary for plants to survive upon. The upturned earth also aids in burying seeds. Larger indentions may also be created when a bison rolls upon the dirt to cool off. These may eventually form water holes for all types of species. Wolves, bears, and mountain lions also hunt young, weak, and/or old bison. This allows predators to provide for themselves and their offspring. Females produce one calf per year with an average gestation period of around nine months. The maximum life span of a bison is thirty-three years. The average size
Years ago, killing animals for food was part of the average man’s everyday life. While, now a days, hunting is questioned by many across the world because it is commonly viewed as a recreational activity. Many residents have a problem with the dangers that come with hunting. Not to mention, as time goes on, society seems to feel differently about animals and how they should be treated. One of the biggest debates is the harvest of white tailed deer. All over the United States, white tailed deer thrive because of the few predators that feast upon them and the large forests and habitats that these deer can flourish in. However, as buildings and subdivisions pop up left and right decreasing the white tailed deer natural habitat, the debate grows stronger. The heart of the debate is centered around ethical issues, human and deer conflicts, safety, and the benefits hunting has on the economy.
The white tiger is one of the biggest in the cat family. The white tiger is long it can grow up to 3.3 meters long and weigh as much as 300 kilograms hard to carry. Subspecies of the white tiger like Sumatran Tiger, Amur(or Siberian) Tiger, Indian (or Bengal) tiger, south china tiger, malayan tiger,indo-chinese tiger, bali tiger, javan tiger, caspian tiger thats extinct theres nine subspecies of the white tiger.A lot of subspecies are endangered or extinct because people hunt them for their fur to make jackets or sweaters and destroying their habitat. Some tiger cubs don’t live to be an adult because around half of the cubs die around 2-3 years of age.The cubs leave their mother at around 2 years old they live a long time because their mom taught them what they would know from eating to hiding from people.A group of tigers is called ambush or streak because the group may be hunting. You probably thought these tigers can’t swim because they are in the cat family but if you do you are wrong because ...
They have two eyes, and above them are white patches of fur that are like eyebrows that come down past the corners of their eyes. Their snouts are average in size and their mouths and nose are surrounded with white fur. Inside their mouths they have grazing teeth which consist primarily of molars. From their heads, they have long thick necks that lead to their long bodies which measure as long as 6-7 feet.(source 1) For having such a long body the waterbuck is short in its height, and their shoulders only reach 3.5-4.5 feet. (source 1) They are 4-legged and have hooves that are divided into two sections, and they are slightly longer than most antelopes hooves because they help the waterbuck keep balance it the wet and marshy areas. The waterbuck has reddish- brown long shaggy fur which is unusual, considering it lives in a warm climate,
