The quote from Section one, “Time and Change” of the book that was most fascinating was "luck, not superiority, plays a cogent role in determining which organisms survive, especially through times of mass extinction.” found on page 18. The reason I found this quote so fascinating was it reminded me of white rhino that had recently been extinct in its time in Kenya, the White Rhino is one of the most superior animals in the plain, no other animal would have the courage to fight them, but they have been extinct not by other animals, but due to their inability to reproduce fast as other animals such as mosquitoes, who pretty much live everywhere on the surface of earth. White rhinos are also specialized creatures, who are only able to thrive in …show more content…
places that are suitable for them, such as a dry and warm climate. White Rhinos have also been hunted by other poachers either for fun or for money such as their valuable horns that cost a lot of money on the black market. Every species that has ever lived on earth will soon meet their inevitable extinction because luck will not always be on their side when it comes to the decision of nature. Even to generalist species. Humans have been lucky to survive due to the luck of their past ancestors that have managed to pass on their reproductive genes for the future generation, the same goes with other different species that have managed to live on earth today. Have a look on one of the most controversial questions asked such as "Are humans the pinnacle of evolution?” The quote from section two, “The Engine of Evolution” of the book that was most fascinating was "Homo sapiens, since its origins some 150,000 years ago, has come to occupy every continent, with the exception of the hostile wastes of Antarctica." found on page 77. The reason I found this quote so fascinating was that humans are able to live anywhere except for Antarctica, I wonder if humans will ever be able to live there someday, and be able to find mysterious secrets that may lie there. The Antarctic, however, is rapidly decreasing due to the rising temperatures of the Global climate change. This has caused animals such as Polar bears to find areas of land where there is ice. Humans are more of a generalist species, they are able to live in most any parts of the world. Other species do not have the intellectual abilities that humans are able to possess. The knowledge of humans has contributed to humans being able to occupy continents. 150,000 years is massive time scale considering how humans were only able to live around 40 years in the earliest time periods. The populations of humans have not always continuously increased when it was a plague the population of humans began to suffer from it until a new cure was found for it. Once the cure was found the population of humans started increasing back up again. Until the day humans are able to live in Antarctica could be the day where more scientists could believe that humans may be the pinnacle of evolution. The quote from section three, “The balance of nature?” of the book that was most fascinating was "The Clovis people had reached the southern tip of the continent, and now numbered many million, as hunters were easily able to kill large, lumbering prey unused to a new kind of predator." found on page 175.
The reason I found this quote so fascinating was that these predators must have seen these people for the first time, and the population of the Clovis people was rapidly increasing due to the large amounts of resources that were available on the land. These Clovis people were very efficient hunters who killed the predators that were curious about them, it seemed that the Clovis people used weapons such as spears and rocks to kill predators. Animals such as the deinotherium and glyptodont, the two of these species that seem similar to an elephant and an armadillo, were extinct by the hands of these people. The past poachings of these species have occurred for several decades. The general time period was the ice age. It was harder for larger animals to survive in the world because they were hunted more by the impact of humans. The Clovis people took many migration routes around the land, they avoided ice sheets by hugging coastlines in small watercraft. Now predators have a natural fear of humans due to humans killing their past ancestors. Paleontologists have come up with the overkill hypothesis from the Clovis people that have caused the extinction of various large species …show more content…
that have previously lived on the planet. The pre-Clovis era has now been sparse. The quote from section four, “The future” of the book that was most fascinating was "There is a certainty about the future of humanity that cheats our mind's comprehension: one day our species will be no more." Found on page 234.
The reason I found this so fascinating was that it made me remember the fact that all species will inevitably be extinct, just with the connection that even all great nations will soon crumble such as Egypt, one of the greatest nations that had ever lived, but have had its empire destroyed from the Roman empire, whose empire has also soon been crumbled from other countries. With the extinction of human beings, there could be a possibility of other species still able to survive, or no other species that are left to survive on the planet. Human beings have a massive impact on other species whether it is beneficial or consequential to them. Such as providing with habitats so that they won't go extinct, or hunting them down with weapons that cause harm. The most likely case that will cause the extinction of humans could be the sixth mass extinction that is predicted to occur in a few million years. The 6th mass extinction could wipe out most of the human population and cause the few remaining humans who have survived the crisis, to also be extinct due to the limited resources that have been destroyed. There could be a possibility of newer species that rise up that become more advanced and more complex species, these new species will most likely be
generalist species, and may have a higher intellect than humans if possible. The extinction of human beings will take a long time for it to occur.
Earth will outlive us all and when the human species eventually dies out, Earth will still be here fixing itself from the damage we have caused, yet continuing with the natural disasters. I do admit, we are polluting the planet, but there will always be some sort of life on Earth even if humans are not. People should not be too worried about destroying the planet because it will heal itself. If people begin to pollute it too much, Earth will kill us off. Roderick Nash, along with many other people, underestimates the power of the Earth. It can take care of itself just like how it has been for over a billion years.
Firstly, Brave Orchid is a woman warrior because she receives an education later in life. Kingston writes, “Not many women get to live out the daydream of women – to have a room, even a section of a room, that only gets messed up when she messes it up herself” (Kingston 61). In this passage, Kingston reveals that a woman going off to live at school was not a commonality. Amongst the other women she lives with, she is by far the oldest. Despite the fact that older women are supposed to be wiser, Kingston does not provide any characters at school that share Brave Orchid’s age; she is about twenty years everyone’s senior. Therefore, being a fully grown adult woman attending medical school must have been a rarity. She did not subject herself to
In, The Fate of the Earth by, Jonathan Schell, he starts with the extinction of dinosaurs then moves onto how it’s not possible to judge on human extinction. He also talks about how the extinction of animals and how we have learned from our mistakes. He states how we live, then we die. And how different catastrophes could kill everyone or how they could slowly become extinct from those catastrophes. He mainly talks about population and how the extinction of human beings and once we are extinct we are done.
Kids are not often kind, they do not listen to rules, they think they are better than others. It takes time and trial to change into a kind person. Often in literature, the protagonist changes from the beginning to the novel to the end of the novel. The protagonist changes after a hardship or issue. In Roland Smith’s “Peak” Peak matures from a selfish child to a selfless man, when struggling to climb Everest.
may the God of vengeance now yield me His places to punish the wicked,” (Dumas 131).
The first aspect of Willy's character that affected his failure was his pride. Willy's pride caused him to in many situations make very poor and unethical decisions, that affected both himself and his family. An example of this is through the conversation between Willy and Charley “CHARLEY: ‘You want a job?’ WILLY: ‘I got a job, I told you that. [After a slight pause] What the hell are you offering me a job for?’ CHARLEY: ‘Don’t get insulted.’ WILLY: Don’t insult me.”(DOAS: pg x) Willy does not take the offer which is an obvious example of a poor decision. He makes this decision because he sees this generous whole hearted gesture as a kind of pitiful handout that his pride restricts him from taking. By not taking this handout willy puts his self pride infront of
Human extinction may occur because of many reasons some may include because of how we take care of our planet and what lives on it. Another may be because of a disease or a fungus we may spread to one another and will not be able to gain control over it. Instead if we try to save what is left our species may go even further and we may be able to live longer. Our own comfortable lives and not really affected as they should be because most people do not care what is going on outside of their own lives. They should be more concerned because it does involve them, they are part of the human
The End of Humanity: Could the Human Species Destroy Itself? There are lots of ways humanity could be wiped out - although I don't think any of them are particularly likely. Natural causes - An extinction-level asteroid impact would probably be sufficient, although not much else would - a disease epidemic, major climate shift, etc. would still leave many survivors to rebuild within a few hundred years. The window for such an impact is, however, extremely short, because it's extremely likely that within 300 years or so we will have the means to predict and avert all dangerous impacts.
Humans are destructive. Not a lot of us think about how what we do affects the world around us. We almost act like we are the only ones on this planet. We go around polluting and destroying our world with no regard for our actions. The things that live out in the wild are paying the price for it. Every day that passes there is another animal or plant that is placed on an endangered list. This is happening at an alarming rate. Because of man’s desire to expand and conquer their surroundings, there are animals and plants that are on the brink of extinction that will not be around for our kids and future generations to enjoy if something is not done about it now. This problem has been going on for hundreds of years. There are animals and plants that can only been seen in paintings or early photography. It is because of our early ancestors that we have this problem today and we have to do more to prevent more animals and plants from disappearing forever.
Earth has gone through five fully major extinctions before. We currently are in the process of Earth’s sixth mass extinction. This mass extinction is closely related in severity to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Earth’s extinctions are broken into three different areas. The first area was the large number of animals caught by hunter-gathers. The discovery of agriculture led to the second area of extinction, wildlife habitats. These wildlife habitats were destroyed due to humans starting to stay in one area.
In the novel Purple Hibiscus, Eugene Achike as more than a simple villain. He is depicted as a compelling character by giving Papa both good and bad characteristics. By using his wealth to help the community and his religion, Eugene becomes a respected and admired man by many, but Papa is abusive and violent at home with his family. It is seen throughout the novel that Eugene uses his wealth to secretively help thee less fortunate and express the communities’ opinions about government that many fear to speak about.
Motherhood is seen in our culture as a nurturing and loving role. It’s much more empathetic unlike the view of fathers. A strong and more independent individual with little emotions to speak of. A provider and a protector, a stark contrast to mothers who promote emotional and social growth for their children as opposed to mental or physical. However White Fang has a different take on the vanilla roles parents play and how they should or can function.
== = = Human beings are dependent on the Earth's diversity of species for our survival. Wild species play a vital role in the maintenance of the planets ecological functions, yet everyday on the planet 40-100 species become extinct.
Critics claim that species vanish and new ones appear all the time. That’s true, if you’re talking in terms of millennia. Species disappear at an approximate rate of one species per million per year, with new species replacing the lost ones at about the same rate. Although lately humans caused the extinction rate to severely increase, to where entire species are annihilated each day. Nature will take millions of years to repair what is destroyed in just a few decades.
Everyone’s all seen those wildlife shows on tv. The shows on National Geographic and such, showing animals in beautiful environments, everything lush and growing and nothing at all wrong that could threaten these creatures and places. But, have anyone seen the other side? The side where all these beautiful creatures and plants starve, are decimated by predators that have never been there before, and sometime even become poisoned by their very own homes and habitats? Of course no one has. That doesn’t mean that its not happening. It is happening, and its happening everywhere. And guess who is to blame? People. Society. Humans as a race pollute the environment, hunt animals simply for their parts, fish way more than humans will ever need just for the sake of money, introduce new species to new places for our own gain, and even purposefully destroy entire regions just for human expansion. And its starting to take its toll. While it is true that nature is constantly in flux and certain species come and go, humans are causing more species to disappear in the past few hundred years then nature has ever caused since the age of the dinosaurs, and therefore it is up to humans to repair the damage caused, be it cleaning the environment and habitats of these creatures, or taking more direct action to protect and preserve the species that are on the brink of extinction.
