What would happen if nobody went against the norm? In George Orwell’s 1984 Winston didn’t like the way that the society was so he went against the society’s norms in hiding until he was caught. In the movie Minority Report John went into hiding because he was said to kill someone and was set up by another person. When John was caught his wife then went against the norm and broke John out. The most important lesson in 1984 and Minority Report is that people need to be willing to think for themselves instead of having a group control how people view things. Otherwise, nothing will progress or get better. The control of certain groups affects the way that the people will view their society. The Party has it’s people so brainwashed that the people won’t defy them which makes no progress because no different ideas would be present. No people are thinking for themselves the Party is thinking for them and if they do start thinking for themselves the Party brainwashes them back into following their rules. In the movie, when the Thought Crime agency finds out that John was going to kill someone they instantly started a manhunt for John without considering if John was going to choose differently. John and the other people who committed the crime of thinking that they were gonna kill someone didn’t have a chance to think for themselves and decide to do something other than kill the people. John was willing to think for himself but the Thought Crime agency didn’t think that this it was really possible to do so.
