What steps should you take prior to making a purchase?
Our reading this week teaches us that there are three steps that should be performed prior to making your purchase. Siegel and Yachts cover that you must first identify the product, this can be done by comparing attributes between the items that you are looking at. These attributes can vary on importance depending on the product itself. If it is something simple as purchasing toilet paper, the typical key attribute is with how soft it is, moving to something more complex as a television, you will have a great number of features such as sound quality, audio, or picture clarity to name a few. The more attributes the Item have, the possible harder it is to select. We later learn the next step is to identify the market, in this step Siegel and Yachts explain that you will compare price, delivery (return), and convenience. Siegel and Yacht discuss two steps that should be done after your purchase. First of those is maintenance, to ensure you maintain the item you purchased to make sure it doesn’t have problems. A vacuum has basic maintenance that should be performed, cleaning to ensure it is able to function properly. Maintenance can be difficult if you don’t have an understanding, with a car that maintenance can be much harder to perform. Last of course is how to address dissatisfaction, this can be hard depending on the company you purchase from. My job being a supervisor in customer service for a cable company makes me have a good understanding on this topic. Ideally in most situations you would want to work with the company you purchase the item from to solve any issues, but in some situations you may need to go with alternatives such as contacting the better business
This happens because after we see that first thing the impulse feeling never goes away. As this feeling is just sitting there on your chest it makes you want to spend money or buy something to satisfy that feeling which results in impulse buying. “To resist impulse buying you need to find your impulse buying triggers. You need to find these because you need to steer clear of the things that make your impulse signals kick in. This is because once you do this there is no need to exert self-control and try not to buy something or do something” (Source
People make purchases on the basis of emotion rather than logic. I believe out of my experience that people decide to buy something not because it serves them a purpose but because it feels right to them. After this first stage of buying I know for sure that people start to think of logic to justify their decision to themselves. So it becomes extremely important for a salesperson to make an emotional connection between their prospects and themselves. I make sure that every time I have a prospect I will make a personal connection with that particular prospect. The whole idea behind it is used to generate an interest that touches them internally. This way I made sure that my time is not wasted and I am able to sell more over a selling spree. Therefore, it becomes extremely important for you as a salesperson to close deals on the basis of the emotions rather than selling with logic.

From buying a hamburger to buying a house people use a process in order to make a decision on what to buy. (book cite) describes this as the consumer decision process (pg.175). Utilizing a consumer decision process model, marketers are able to better understand how consumers are purchasing products and services. The five step consumer decision process model includes need recognition, information search, alternative evaluation, purchase, and post purchase. Not all purchases require following all five steps to a T, but consumers, whether they know it or not, follow a version of this model when making a purchase. This might appear obvious to many shoppers. But I believe multitudes of people purchase items without ever considering what they buy could be found elsewhere for less money. Even I am guilty of assuming that Walmart has the best prices on everything. If I take a small amount of time to search for a specific coffee maker, I can find the large chain store 's prices such as Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Sears, along with other smaller retailers. (In some cases smaller stores ' prices are lower.) Many stores price match, so if I prefer to shop at Walmart because I live close to one, I can have them match the competing retailers lower price. Also, many retailers provide free shipping on online orders totaling a certain amount. Therefore, if physically visiting the store with the lowest prices is not feasible, shoppers can order items online for no extra charge. However, ordering from brick-and-mortar stores—physically or online—is not always the best option. Websites such as Amazon and eBay have millions of items from multiple sellers. Sellers will compete with each other for the lowest price, often providing shoppers with a price lower than those of larger stores. According to a study by Dr. Kirthi Kalyanam, who obtained his doctorate in Business Administration, “88% of consumers are researching items online and then buying in a physical store.” (Kalyanam) This signifies that a big measure of consumers use the data that they have obtained online, largely triggered by advertisements, when they undergo the decision making process when buying a product/service in a store. Since the consumer has already explored the product online, the decision making process is cut down significantly and the consumer almost always buys the merchandise that they have already searched. This research that they conduct is mostly sparked by an online advertisement which the consumer sees about the product. Lately, I’ve been having a lot online shopping experiences. I usually buy from websites with a huge variety of sellers to be sure that I get the best price. When you’re looking for the best price, it requires research. The best price is more often found online, but not always. Online merchants will sometimes sell you an item for double the retail price. When the price isn’t doubled, it may be the same price plus shipping costs. Therefore, you still won’t have the best price. This item could possibly be on sale in retail stores.
Everyone likes shopping, but everyone has their own way of spending when they go shopping. I love shopping, but I hate being at the mall, if I don’t need to be there then I won’t be there. I’ve noticed that when I have money, I do not buy anything, and when I do not have money I want everything I see. From my experience I’ve observed that there are people who shop smart, people who are just plain addicted to shopping, people who join another person while shopping, basically called window watchers.
Online shopping allows you to compare prices with other stores and endless sizes and colors are available to you that normally wouldn’t be in stores. The convenience of being able to check multiple stores prices without having to waste gas to drive to multiple stores to find the best price is just one of the many ways shopping online can save you money. We all know children grow at an exponential rate so having to go to the mall multiple times a month is frustrating and tiring. Being able to have someone deliver whatever you desire right to your doorstep is like receiving a gift. Another pro of online shopping is having access to customer reviews. Yes, you may be able to physically hold the item if you were buying it from a store, but by reading the customer reviews you can decide if the product is worth the price. You can even write your own review to inform other people of your opinion of the product. If you don’t like the product, most places allow you to ship it back hassle-free with a full refund or
