News can be defined as newsworthy information about recent events reported by the media. The definition of news often has individual’s eager to dig a little deeper and question “what makes news newsworthy?” Naturally, journalists have an increasing amount of competition in this particular field. If there are multiple newsworthy stories in one day over a similar topic, many are bound to be dropped or delayed. Editors and reporters have to do their best to ultimately decide what is interesting, exciting, and unique about a certain story that will make it prominent.

Things are constantly changing which keeps individuals intrigued and always wanting more. Recently, Apple Inc. confirmed of some malicious activity on its IOS app store, resulting in Apple having to clean out the virus called XCodeGhost installed in many of their apps. For those individuals who rely on their IPad’s and IPhones to get through the day, this is seen as a concern. People do not want to buy counterfeit software that could potentially be infected. The news article is highly newsworthy because of its usefulness in informing the public of the issue and how it is being handled. The timeliness of the article also plays a drastic role due to the importance of the story. Timeliness is described as the importance of a recent and or present article versus old information that is no longer of use. A reporter made sure this information reached the world as soon as possible. For example, the film All the Presidents Men directed by Alan J. Pakula, involved the main characters Woodward and Bernstein expressing the importance of getting critical information to the public in the quickest way possible. Andrew Rossi’s documentary film, Page One: Inside the New York Times fits into the finger categories of news media/entertainment and social relationships. The most relevant category is news media/entertainment. The New York Times is the nation’s oldest continually publishing major newspaper. A newspaper is a type of news media, and its goal is to inform the public. The documentary also fits into the category of social relationships. The documentary depicts many relationships that are a part of the New York Times. It shows partnerships between companies such as that with Vice and the Comcast – NBC merger. Additionally, the Times is made possible by a close relationship between its employees. The documentary makes frequent reference to the need for everyone to work well together and how that makes the Times such a great paper. The New York Time’s influence is not limited to finger categories; it affects millions of people worldwide.

Wang’s studies have shown that news industries are now tabloidizing news because it elicits the attention of their viewers. Now the only thing considered as “entertainment” in the news is “crimes, accidents, and disasters”. Wangs writes “News that bleeds seem to still lead the primary broadcasts” (Wang 722). In “Reporting the News” by George C. Edwards III, Martin P. Wattenberg, and Robert L. Lineberry, the main idea is how the media determines what to air, where to get said stories that will air, how the media presents the news, and the medias effect on the general public. “Reporting The News” is a very strong and detailed article. The authors’ purpose is to inform the readers of what goes on in the news media. This can be inferred by the authors’ tone. The authors’ overall tone is critical of the topics that are covered. The tone can be determined by the authors’ strong use of transitions, specific examples, and phrases or words that indicate analysis. News is extremely subjective, especially when determining what order a news bulletin should go in and what stories to pick. Often news falls into one or more categories (Harcup, 2009, P43), which are based on what will interest a particular audience. Every week in our news days, we would discuss the order in which our stories would go and also how interesting the story is to our viewer. Often, stories that are more accessible and have better pictures tend to be higher in the bulletin. However, news which often affects more people will make the top bulletin. With news being so subjective, it reframes the viewer from accessing this eliminating process. Often, stories that are more effective and interesting to the viewer are eliminated as finding the person or pictures may prove difficult. This can inflict a very narrow-minded view of the world to the viewer as they are only viewing what we decide is newsworthy, whereas if they had seen the bulletin, they may have argued for other stories to make the news.

News stories are covered several times and most of us do not even realize it. Although more recently many people get news in more similar mediums such as on the Internet because of the decline of newspapers. “Since 1940, the total number of daily newspapers has dropped more than 21 percent” (McIntosh and Pavlik, 119). Many times we do not realize the same story we read online was covered on our local news station and in our local newspaper, even further than that this same story is being covered in many different news stations, newspapers, and news sites all over the country and even the world. So what makes these stories different? Each time you read a news story from a different source something different happens to it. The different views and frames used by the source gives the reader a different take every time. I saw that first hand in my two stories. In my project I compared the same story of Mya Lyons, a nine year old girl who was stabbed to death.

When looking at its meager beginnings Apple’s influence on the media could only be described as unique. Their product, style, and overall beliefs make the Apple Corporation a multi-billion dollar company with a general appeal for all ages. It is getting harder and harder to be an individual, so with Apple you can “rise above the norm” and be unique. Recently, this unique corporation has taken the media by storm, with their new line of products. Right along side these new products are a full line of new commercials to go along with them. These new commercials spawned from years of creative marketing done on Apple’s part. Studying the history of Apple is necessary to understanding their influence upon us today.
During these difficult economic times sensationalism has become more prevalent in the media. Stories involving sex scandals and child murders have taken over our T.V and internet screens as well as the front pages of our newspapers. The media bias of sensationalism has been used as a sort of escapism for readers. Although it may seem that sensationalism has just started making waves, it has been around for decades. Sensationalism has been influencing viewers and contributing to media bias since the days of the penny press. Sensationalisms long history has been turbulent, self-serving, and influential to today’s reporting practices. With the influence over readers’ sensationalism’s media bias have and will continue to affect media reporting for years to come.
So are stories that reaffirm our humanity and the resilience of the human spirit – the drowned high school student, the 13-year-old boy and the 10-year-old girl struggling to come back to life from the brink of death – and, certainly, the story of an innocent 7-year-old girl shot down during a senseless act of violence. Stories of missing boaters and heroic efforts to find them are news as well. Even stories of aberrant behavior and politicians falling from grace are news. However, as I stated earlier, it is important to supplement TV news with other sources of information, e.g., a reputable newspaper, a weekly news magazine, or a radio news broadcast, for more in-depth coverage, insights gained from different perspectives, and any stories not covered in the television newscasts.
Nowadays the media have transformed its main mission of reporting news that actually happened in an accurate and objective way into covering stirring and controversial issues as news stories due to capitalistic motives. Moreover, today’s media took the motto “If it bleeds it leads” as a criteria to report any story. The aim of following this motto was to achieve high viewership rates and as a result gain more advertisers which will ultimately increase the profits. However, this motto changed the media from reporting facts into reporting sensational-fearful news. Thus, this paper will demonstrate the effects of sensational news, and how the media plays on the cultivation theory using sensationalism to increase viewers.

This background report investigates and explains the downfall of the newspaper and the technological shift to online news. It will also discuss differing opinions of this relevant topic of the future of journalism from a range of reliable primary sources and investigative data.
Everyone watches the news but does that mean we have to trust them? The media is known for giving us verified information that is usually observed and /or proven. Most people get their information about current events from the news media because it would be impossible to gather all the news themselves. Television news is extremely important in the United States because more people get their news from television broadcasts than from any other source. Print media is the oldest form of media but is very significant. It is known for just reporting more than any other source of media. Radio news was the best ways to broadcast news before the television but, people still listen to the radio every day. “If errors regularly occur in a publication, its reputation suffers in threaten the very existence of publication,” said journalist Maximilian Schafer. Nobody wants to read false publication when they deserve the truth. There are several types of media but false news would still get out to the society by one of these Medias. There have situations where the news told the public false information and got away with it.
Throughout the previous years, individuals view media for further entertainment rather then the actual message portrayed. We simply observe or recite if the news media is outrageous or affects to the lives of the icons presently in the interest. Currently, the image of privacy connected with individuals providing newscasts has entirely disappeared. In the news media the images have become more important than the message itself due to mass media. Audience and visual images have become more common because the brain reads the images rather then the words. We take caution about what we see; then what is essentially being shown throughout media. The newscast today is being more of entertainment purposes then the actual message shown. Nowadays what we see on display changes anything we recognize.
Over the past decade, social media has had a great impact on the way people communicate information to each other. However, this has had some adverse effects on various news outlets and their audiences. Today, it can be inferred that many people prefer getting their news from the internet rather than sitting down in front of a television or reading a newspaper. Many digital news organizations emphasize that social media is important in story-telling and engaging the audiences they attract. It is very important that you get your news when you need it, and in my opinion, the traditional news media does not give information faster than the internet or social media does.
