Thousands of years ago, the lord appeared to a 99 year old man by the name of Abram. The lord made a covenant with Abram to make him the ancestor of great nations. No longer would the man's name be Abram. Instead, he would now be known as Abraham, for he would be the ancestor of many nations and kings. Through Abraham and his descendants, three religions would arise. These religions are Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. While these religions are similar in many ways, the faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have many important differences that make each religion unique. The differences that make Judaism unique include its founding by Isaac, the Jewish homeland of Israel, the Torah, and the Jewish name for God. Judaism was founded by …show more content…
Christianity was founded by Jesus of Nazareth. Christians believe Jesus was the son of God, and the prophesied messiah. This is a belief exclusive to Christians. To the Jews, Jesus was only a wise teacher who was by no means the messiah (“What Do Jews Believe About Jesus?” n.pag.). Muslims believe that rather than the messiah, Jesus was a prophet (Godlas n.pag.). Christians follow their holy book known as the Bible. The Bible consists of the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament consists of the old stories from the Torah while the New Testament consists of the stories of Jesus and early Christians. Christianity would eventually become the most popular religion in the world with close to 2.22 billion followers today (Illsley n.pag.). Christianity's popularity can be attributed to the Roman Empire after Emperor Constantine made Christianity the empire’s official religion. Eventually, Christianity would spread throughout Europe, and the Roman Catholic Church would become a powerful influence in European religion and politics. Under Catholicism, those who did not adhere to the Catholic faith where persecuted. This would include other abrahamic religions such as the Jews, Muslims, and Christians who diverged from the Church’s interpretation of Christianity. Most notably, the Catholic Church would organize military campaigns known as the …show more content…
The roots of Islam traces back to Ishmael, the eldest son of Abraham. Ishmael was born to Abraham and his slave Hagar when Sarah believed herself to never have the ability to bare a child. Hagar believed Ishmael to be the proficised child who would be the heir to Abraham's covenant. This was no longer the case with the birth of Isaac. When Isaac was circumcised, Ishmael mocked him (Zavada n.pag.). This would eventually lead Ishmael and his mother to be cast out of Canaan and into the wilderness. However, God had promised Abraham that he would make a nation out of Ishmael too. From Ishmael came the twelve Arab tribes. Eventually Muhammad, the founder of Islam, would be born from Ishmael's line. Muhammad would be visited by the angel Gabriel who revealed to him the word of God. It was Muhammad's job to spread God’s word to the Arabian Peninsula in order to change their polytheistic ways. Muhammad's teachings and knowledge would be put together to create the Quran, the Islamic holy book. Muslims also follow the five pillars of Islam. The five pillars are faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage. Muslims do not believe in creating depictions of Muhammad and Allah. This is because they believe depictions would lead to worship of the depictions as idols rather than worshiping only Allah. After the death of Muhammad,
Abraham would start to gather small groups around him who believed as he did. One day, Abram had a vision. In the vision, God tells Abram to leave his father’s house, which is today’s Iraq, and travel to a place that God will show him. God said that if Abram who becomes Abraham obeyed this command, his descendants would become a great nation, and that he would bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee: and in thee shall all the families of earth be blessed”.... ...
One thing common between these two religions is that they both are monotheistic and believe that there is only one god. Something that is different is that the Judaism started around 1900 BC unlike Islam which started in the 7th century. Both religions are also disparate when it comes to devotion. The Muslim spend so much time everyday to pray for their god Allah unlike the Jewish. The Jewish are very religious when it comes to special events like marriage but during daily they aren 't that dedicated as the Muslim. Another difference is that the Muslims day of worship is on Friday unlike the Jewish which is on Saturday. Most of the Jewish live in Europe and the United States in contrast to the majority of the Muslim who are inhabited in the Middle East, and Southeast
On the other hand, Christianity traces its origin from Jesus Christ from whom the disciples, at Antioch, were first called Christians due to their manner of living, which was like Jesus Christ’s. Both Christians and Jews believe in one God who is called Jehovah; however, the point of divergence is that while Christians believe in the trinity (that is, God is one substance but three persons in one namely the Father, Son and Holy Spirit), the Jews believe in God being just one substance one
In Judaism, the holy book was known as the Torah. It is comprised of the five books in the bible. Human beings had an obligation to honor the holy text and serve God by practicing what was stated in the bible. However, in Christianity, the holy text is based on both the Old and New Testament. This bible consisted of teachings and life of Jesus. Lastly, for the Islam religion, their holy text was the Quran. The bible was inspired by God and gave many people inspiration and guidance in their lives. Thus, many people will apply what was stated in the bible to their lives to live righteously. All three religions required individuals to read their holy texts, pray, and stay faithful to
Islam and the worship of Allah (god) began with Muhammad and his revelations that lasted for 23 years of his life from (610 C.E.- 623 C.E.). In the Islamic religion it is believed that he was the last prophet sent by Allah (god) and this made all his teachings into to Law and are looked at as the will of God. These messages were given to him through the archangel Gabriel, in a kind of continuation to the Jewish Torah and Christian Bible, which the Qur’an shares some similarities or past “history” with them such as the belief in Abraham and Jesus as a prophet, but in the eye’s of Mohammad the Jews and Christians had fallen astray from the real teaching of god.
The Christians have their book known as the Bible. Lastly, the Islamic people have their book known as the Quran. All three of these books have scriptures. These three major religions also share a belief that there is one major area that they claim as their Holy Land. The Jews and the Christians claim Jerusalem, Israel as their Holy Land while the Islamic people claim Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
Christianity is mainly founded on the life, death, teachings, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christianity was developed from Judaism during the 1st century, it has several different branches and forms which accompany different beliefs and practices. Christianity
Judaism and Islam are known to be two of the main religions that are found throughout the world. They each have similar traits and many more differences. They both are monotheistic, which means they only believe in one god. Muslims worship the God called Allah, which means in Arabic “the God”. And Jews worship the god called Yahweh, which means the God of Israel. Their differences include their core beliefs, rituals, symbols, and history.
Centuries after he lived, Jewish scholars wrote down stories endeavoring to explain how Abraham, the son of a Babylonian idol carver named Terach, discovered God on his own when he was a small child.
Althoughthe two religions share some of the same beliefs, there are vital differences between the two. Judaism is called the religion of the Jews and was the first faith to believe in one God. Christianity then followed that belief. Both religions are based on monotheism (that there is only one God).
Islam is a major world religion. Its origin can be traced back to 610 CE in Arabia. The basis of this religion is the revelations to the prophet Mohammad. Dissatisfied with his life, he traveled to deserts, hills, and the wilderness surrounding Mecca, where he lived, to meditate and reflect. He became a new man through his revelations, which many of his followers believe Allah transmitted to him through his angel Gabriel. Islam was originally an Arab religion, but many different beliefs and practices were added to it, making it extremely popular and aiding in its rapid spread. This new religion spread to many different areas surrounding Arabia, both under Mohammad and after his death. The Muslim Empire grew to encompass Spain and the Eastern Roman Empire as well Persia and Africa. Many different practices and methods were used to spread Islam. The religion itself was appealing to, in addition to the inhabitants of Arabia, other people in the surrounding areas because of its distinct religious beliefs and practices, such as the five pillars, as well as the humility and prayerfulness of the Islamic people. They fought cruel, vicious wars with their enemies. Many different things motivated the warriors to expand, but above all, the riches they would gain from the people of the Fertile Crescent encouraged them to expand.
Every religion has its own goal, and their own path and believe to reach their goals, however there are also many similarities in believes. Although the followers of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam may see things differently, they all fundamentally hold the same values and codes. To Islam, the Prophet Mohammad’s teaching is a complete and final revelation. On the other hand, according to the bible, Christianity believes that Jesus Christ is the true lord and savior will grant you the access to heaven in the afterlife. Judaism is founded by Abraham, and it is the base from which both of the other two religions sprung. Even though the three religions differ in many areas and on many aspects, they also agree on the monotheistic, the belief in ‘One True God.’ Those religions have many similarities and a number of significant differences about God, role of women, prayer, and salvation.
Judaism, Christianity and Islam share the same birthplace the Middle East. Jerusalem is not only the home to Judaism but Christian and Muslim Religions as well. Equally important is the expansion of religions. For example Judaism and Christianity are also practiced in Europe, North America, Russia and elsewhere. Islam can be found in Europe, Central Asia, North and West Africa and elsewhere. (30-41)
Islam was started around 610 C.E. It was founded by Muhammed. He was also a prophet of Islam. At forty years old, He felt that he was selected by Allah to be the prophet of a true religion. He preached and spread the word.
The historical connections with Judaism, Christianity and Islam might have different names but all three religions share some of the same beliefs. One thing that all three of these religions have in common is they all believe in one God but they all follow different religious beliefs. “All three faiths emphasize their special covenant with God, for Judaism through Moses, Christianity through Jesus, and Islam through Muhammad” (John, 2016). Despite all religions have there differences Islam valued the different prophets that Christianity and Judaism.
