“If the American dream is to come true and to abide with us,” Adams wrote in 1931, “it will, at bottom depend on the people themselves.” Many people view the American dream and what it means differently, this has been the case since the beginning of America. Even though we may all have a slightly different idea of the American Dream and what it means, the dream is still alive. The American Dream is alive today, but we all need to work together to keep the dream alive.
Benjamin Franklin believed that every American must perfect each virtue in order to achieve the American Dream and make America into a world power. The virtues are temperance, silence, order resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity and humility. This is a lot to perfect and takes hard work and dedication to do so. He also felt that the ability to reach the American Dream was through education, the ability to read and write. These beliefs still remain today, education and hard work are needed to achieve these lofty goals. People make mistakes and by recognizing them and fixing them, whether they are yours or your communities, you learn from the mistakes and can achieve anything you set your mind to, including your dreams.

The cost of the American dream currently is believed to be about $130,000 a year. The average income is closer to $50,000. Many believe because of this the American Dream is not achievable. But is this so much more expensive than it was for a poor European farmer back in the 1800’s that had to save for years to earn enough money to pay for a ticket for just himself?
