Some decisions require sacrifices to fulfill some wants or needs. People sacrifice their prized options for someone they really love. In the story, “The Gift of the Magi”, by O. Henry two people, Jim and Della, who were a very happy couple that loved each other so much. They had problems in finance because Jim’s wage dropped from 30 dollars to 20 dollars. It was around Christmas time and they wanted to get a gift for each other. They had one problem they did not have enough money, so they sacrificed their most prized possessions. Della sacrificed her long hair and Jim his watch that had been passed down through his family. Who made a bigger sacrifice? They both made a huge sacrifice for each and their sacrifices both had a different type of sacrifice. Jim had a more physical sacrifice and Della had a more emotional sacrifice. Jim made a bigger physical sacrifice because he sold his watch to get combs for Della. This is a bigger physical sacrifice because it was a watch that had a lot of sentimental value and it cannot be replaced. It has more sentimental value because, “One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and grandfather’s,”(Henry 9), it had been passed through his family and his father owned it and also his grandfather owned it. Henry, Jim and Della both made sacrifices for each other to get presents by selling their most prized possessions. Jim had a bugger physical sacrifice because he sold his watch that he can not get back and it had sentimental value. Della sold her hair that was a bigger emotional sacrifice because it had memories and her hair made her unique. At the end, Jim made a bigger sacrifice because he sold the watch that can not just grow back like hair and he might never found it again. Them selling their prized possessions did not have an effect on their love for each other because their love was not dependent on their prized
