Over time, the role of women in films and society has changed drastically. In the 1940’s, all women were portrayed as weak. Many different films during this time made female characters dependent on other male characters, however, fighting women have overcome this obstacle and broke the stereotype about them being weak. Casablanca is a movie directed by Michael Curtiz that was filmed in 1939 and takes place at the start of World War II. In this film, Ilsa is the main female character and she is always relying on two men throughout the plot, Rick and Laszlo. For example, in one of the scenes, Ilsa says to Rick, “you have to think for both of us” (Curtiz). This demonstrates the idea that Ilsa is and also portrays that Ilsa is so weak that she
cannot even think for herself. Casablanca is one text that shows this idea during this time period, but since then women have changed and become much stronger and independent. A few years after Casablanca was shown in theatres to the general public, Norman Rockwell illustrated his “Rosie the Riveter” images. Norman Rockwell is a historic, well-known painter who liked to paint portraits of women at hard work. One of, if not the most famous paintings of his, “Rosie the Riveter,” is an image portraying a hard working woman eating a sandwich while resting a loaded rivet gun in her lap. In the picture she is not only dirty from working in the factory, but also appears to be very strong and masculine. Rosie was “an example of a strong, competent foremother” during the time and broke barriers by destroying the stereotype (Harvey). When I see Rosie the Riveter, I also think of the superhero Supergirl, since she is also a hard working and independent woman who helps protect our country in numerous comics and movies. Super Girl and Rosie the Riveter both have many similarities, they are both very strong, independent, hard working, and tough. They both appear to have larger muscles and look more masculine than Ilsa Lund. Rosie and Supergirl appear more masculine than Ilsa, because Rosie has the loaded Rivet gun and Supergirl wears her costume with body armor, which relates to Superman’s costume, while Ilsa just wears regular clothes and plays a normal role in Casablanca. Finally, both Rosie and Supergirl are more masculine and stronger than Ilsa, portrayed by phallic symbols.
In the essay “Beautiful Friendship: Masculinity & Nationalism in Casablanca”, Peter Kunze lavishly explains the magnificence of Michael Curtiz’s 1942 film Casablanca. Kunze focuses on how the movie not only highlights an exchange of relationships, but how the film has an underlying meaning between these relationships. If Casablanca's audience had to choose between Rick and Laszlo, they would choose Rick because everything in the film has prepared them to choose him, who represents the rejection of America's involvement in world politics. Instead, the film relieves the audience of the necessity of choice by displacing the film's political conflict into melodrama, where familiar emotions overwhelm ideas. Although Victor Laszlo is always in Rick's shadow, he stands for the values of the father and the prevailing American belief in 1942 that freedom is worth fighting and dying for, which is the definition of the official hero. By censoring the theme of American reluctance to give up its autonomy, the film spares the audience the agony of siding against the values of the father, condensing the oedipal resolution to another shared experience between Rick and the viewer.
The Disney movie, Mulan, is a fantastic movie that depicts gender-stereotyped roles, socialization of gender roles, and consequences of over stepping one’s gender role. Both males and females have a specific role in the Chinese society that one must follow. Mulan made a brave choice pretending to be a man and going to war against the Huns in place of her father, risking serious consequences if she were to get caught. She broke the socialization of gender roles and could have been faced with very serious consequences of her actions. The Chinese society in Mulan exemplifies the typical gender roles of males and females, the consequences of displaying the opposite gender role, and showed what the society expected in males and females in characteristics and attitudes.

Casablanca also uses camera angle specifically portraying Captain Renault and Strasser as less powerful people in the office scene. Editing allows for smooth transitions between shots and allows for us as viewers to experience the scene like we are seeing through the characters eyes. Lighting provides us a mood of the scene, specifically when Rick first sees Ilsa for the first time since Paris. The Music plays a role in how we as audiences should feel while watching the movie. And without production design movies would not flow correctly. Every setting is specifically chosen to depict the location where the scene takes place. Casablanca is a quintessential film because it ties up all the formal elements of classical Hollywood. Without this movie Hollywood may be a completely different place.
These movies allowed female characters to embody all the contradictions that could make them a woman. They were portrayed as the “femme fatale” and also “mother,” the “seductress” and at the same time the “saint,” (Newsom, 2011). Female characters were multi-faceted during this time and had much more complexity and interesting qualities than in the movies we watch today. Today, only 16% of protagonists in movies are female, and the portrayal of these women is one of sexualization and dependence rather than complexity (Newsom, 2011).
In Beowulf, the role of women is greatly different then that of old Greek literature and epic. Women in Beowulf are presented as peace-makers and they are respected, compared to the Greek view that women are on the same level as spoils of war and livestock; something you own and show as a trophy. Mainstream cinema never looks at women as "beings with ideas," as she says in an interview, but as empty shells, foils for the male characters, so that they can act and think (Pick 78). She had to fight a whole tradition of male filmmaking with her movie, and (re)assert her own feminist values in a film that challenges all the stereotypical filmic representation...
Contemplating the relationship between gender and power, one undoubtedly notices that tradition regards men as the holders of official office and power. Historically, men have also always been the leaders of their families, and turned to in times of trouble or need. Making generalizations is normally a weak approach to any task; in this case however, it is necessary to do so in order to illustrate how drastically opposite the situations prove in various selections from "1001 Arabian Nights." Rather than men taking critical roles of power, the women characters, especially at crucial moments in the plot, empower themselves far beyond the male figures, and, consequently, prove much more important to their respective plots. The stories offer a different perspective on the gender-power relationship and, consequently, ask readers to reconsider their notions of the traditional relationship between gender and power.
It is difficult to fully understand the role of women in ancient Egyptian society because the understandings of the society and government are still incomplete. There are also two other major problems, those being that there is very little source material on women, and the material that has been found was biased by the ideas and minds of previous Egyptologists. The only source material that has survived from great kingdoms of Egypt is material that has been either found in tombs on the walls and sarcophaguses, or carved on major government and religious document. None of the writings on papyrus and other delicate materials survived. This material, which has survived, is the writings of the Egyptian literate male elite. In their writings the also did not show any emotions or feelings, this was not the style of the Egyptian people, writings were purely a record keeping device. Because of these limitations, “It is essential to avoid the temptation to extrapolate from the particular to the general, a process which can only too easily introduce error.”
A women's job in the 1920s was to be chained to her house and abide by the unwritten laws of being a woman. Women were stuck in various rituals and traditions that only benefited the men of the world. In 1931, a novel named Brave New World was published by a man who made a utopian society where everyone was "equal" and science was all everyone believed. In the utopian society sex was acceptable, even encouraged, to have it at a young age. The novel went against everything society in 1920 stood for and was a disturbing culture shock for people; but if you look closely, a Brave New World wasn't that different from their society. In the 16th century, women and men were defined as having specific and contrasting roles within society. Men were defined as being powerful and dominant while women were defined as being submissive and meek. These ideals can be seen across cultures and throughout time. With these definitions of gender roles in place, the text suggests that gender is a social construct therefore qualities of femininity and masculinity are subjective. This is shown when Portia cross dresses as the lawyer Balthazar (IV) and when the truths of the rings are discovered by the two women (V). During that time period women were not looked as women as today are looked at; in the other hand all of these indecisive decisions lead up to a groundbreaking era. However, before they reached to that level, women struggle to live in society going through different areas such as politics, women’s rights, and roles. In Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, the role of women is quite significant. Although there are only three women throughout the play, Jessica, Nerissa, and Portia, all play a role that affects the outcome of the play. Portia, Jessica, and Nerissa are all very significant characters from this time period. The three women display characteristics of bravery, independence, and intelligence.
The role women play in today’s society is a drastic change from the previous role. Women used to be confined to the superiority of the man. Physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, belittled, embarrassed, and silenced. These are just a few examples of the emotion from the isolated treatment of the past. A woman’s role in today’s society is more valued than ever before.
