Introduction
The Adventurous Simplicissimus (Simplicius Simplicissimus or Simplicissimus) was written in 1668 by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen but bears the 1669 publication year. The author was not known until 1838 because the novel had been published under the alias of ‘Samuel Greifnsohn vom Hirschfelt’. Grimmelshausen examines religion, pastoralism, persecution, folly, meaning of human existence and human nature to express his pro-educational and pro-pastoral sentiments. In examining these sentiments, a historian obtains the earliest sociological accounts of the Thirty Years’ War. The characters lived in an age of a devastating war; looting, diseases and suffering that cripple not only their infrastructures but also their heart’s patriotism.

The novel, ‘The Adventurous Simplicissimus’, is the first German masterpiece novel inspired by the events of the thirty years’ war in Germany from 1618 to 1648. The novel is told from the perspective of Simplicius (the protagonist) as he travels through the tumultuous world during the thirty years’ war. Often historians have thrust the sociological side of the war into the background. Living in an age of such a devastating war, the characters experienced looting, diseases, torture and yet some obtained good fortune. This crippled their infrastructures and sense of patriotism. The general situation of society during this time was depressing, no one was safe and no one was comfortable. The end of the thirty years war that is described in Simplicissimus caused one of the worst economic situations in Germany
