What someone doesn’t know won’t hurt them, in this case this statement is wrong. Victor Frankenstein, the creator of what should be a harmless monster, has a secret to keep from those he loves, from the world. His secret has hurt those close to him though, thus making his grieving worse, leading into a depression where he cannot be fixed. He knew that the creature he created has caused all of the trouble throughout his family in chapters seven through nine. Victor states, “…Its gigantic stature, and the deformity of its aspect, more hideous than belong to humanity, instantly informed me that it was the wretch, the filthy daemon to whom I had given life. Well the answer to that is no one. Victor Frankenstein has told not a soul about the fiend that he has created. Thus leading to the death of a very close family friend of theirs because she was punished for the murder that leads back onto Victors shoulders. Victor states, “And on the morrow Justine died” (60). This quote leads up to him later stating in the book, “I, not in deed, but in effect, was the true murderer” (63). Victor knows that the monster he created was responsible for the assassination of his brother and now Justine. He is the only one who knows this. Victor has not told anyone about his monster and this leads to the huge secret of he is responsible for the murders and the grieving that everyone is going through. Victor begins to let this guilt get to him, no one understands what he is going through because he hasn’t told them of the monster, thus making his grieving and guilt grow stronger. His secrecy of the monster leads to the unfixable guilt. Victor states, “This not the tenderness of friendship, not the beauty of earth, not of heaven, could redeem my soul from woe…) (64).
