The Horn of Plenty A cornucopia is a horn-shaped ornament that can be a true horn of a goat or other animal or can be made of wicker. Usually, cornucopias are filled with common American harvest crops until the amount of crop in a single one is so superfluous that it overflows with food. Corn, pumpkins, and other gourds are commonly put into cornucopias. The word comes from the Latin phrase “cornue copiae,” and its meaning is “horn of plenty.” The “horn of plenty” represents fertility, fortune, and abundance, which are all words also used to describe the American Dream. Cornucopias are an American icon because of their symbolism of abundance, opportunity, and community. Gourds, corn, and pumpkins are the most common and traditional filler for a cornucopia. Cornucopias are horn-shaped, small and closed at one end and wide and open at the other end. The small end is a representation what immigrants come to America with and the large end is the amount that immigrants have the opportunity to get when in America. From the Europeans coming to America to get their own piece of land or to start a new life, to today, immigrants from El Salvador and Mexico come to America to get a better life. Some have come to America without any documentation or money and find themselves with a family, a job, a car, and a house. Immigrants with the desire to get to America often see America as a place of great abundance and opportunity, all pieces of the American Dream many of them wish to have. The small end of a cornucopia is closed while the large end is open. Along with the small end representing the lack of abundance in some immigrants lives, it could also represent the closed off opportunities.
