Religion is a very important factor to a variety of believers. People have the liberty to decide what they want to follow and believe. Conflicts have emerged in Christianity due to the abundant amount of sects that broke off from Christianity. Not having the significant amount of information on religions has led to insignificant remarks and rumors. Each sect has different values and perspectives. The Church of Latter Day Saints and The Roman Catholic Church have different beliefs that reveal different values. The Church of Latter Day Saints otherwise known as the Mormon Church is very different from the Catholic Church. The Mormon Church origin goes back to the 1800’s in Fayette, New York. The founder of this religion is Jesus Christ. The way Catholics perceive their belief on this religion is also extraordinary, Catholics is one of the most powerful religions that have more followers than any other Religion. They believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Son of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is idolized in The Catholic Church. They believe that God sent Jesus Christ to die for their Sins. The book that the Catholics use is The New Testament also known as The Holy Bible. They use this book on the Holy Day, which is Sunday. On the Holy Day, they get dressed up in Sundays best and go to Mass. Mass is one hour and in that hour they sing along to hymns, receive sacred food such as bread and wine, and have a priest giving advice on how to live a sacred life. Catholics meet together outside of Church in their own time to spread their love to God and other people. An example would be the Youth Group, they invite teenagers to come and hear what kids their own age have to say about their savior. Catholics also have retreats for Teens, Women and Men. These retreats help them become closer to God and their community. The people that go to the retreat also help spread the Gospel once they are finished attending their three day retreat. If they have completed a retreat they have the privilege to work on teams. Not many information is available because what they do is sacred and a surprise for incoming
It can be said that religion is one of the most controversial topics in our time. Everyone has their own different opinion of how they want to interpret religion,
The history of the Mormon Church goes back to 1863 when its founder, Joseph Smith, II, claimed to have a vision of the angel Moroni, who appeared to him in upper New York State and instructed him to interpret ancient writings on gold plates. The Mormon doctrine states that Jesus, after His resurrection, appeared to the Native Americans. The accounts with the Native Americans were transcribed onto the gold plates according to Moroni, the messenger. One doctrine of the Mormon Church, The Pearl of Great Price, shares a lot of the private journals of founder Joseph Smith. Founder Smith recalls, "He called me by name, and said that he was a messenger...and that his name was Moroni...," (Pearl. II:33) This is one of the main cornerstones of the Mormon doctrine. The Mormon Church had its beginnings from New York and traveled to Kirtland, Ohio, then on to Spring Hill (Independence), Missouri, and finally traveled back to Nauvoo, Illinois. It was at Nauvoo where on, Jun 27, 1844, Joseph Smith, III, his brother Hyrum Smith and friend John Taylor were ambushed at the Nauvoo-Carthage Jail. In the course of events that transpired, Joseph and Hyrum w...

Religion reinforces the beliefs of individuals within a society. Additionally, religion has played a vital role in society since it influenced the way they lived and the rituals they may or may not have practiced. Different regions of the world during ancient times held a distinct set of beliefs, each based on different or similar principals. Deriving from the polytheistic set of beliefs, monotheism came in place of many Gods, holding just one god accountable for the creation and the existence of mankind. Christianity and Buddhism share similarities and differences, but most importantly the impact that each has on the culture is what is mostly referred to.
The Mennonite church shares many similar beliefs to the Protestant churches today however; they do not consider themselves to be Protestant or Catholic (Zavada, Mennonite Faith, 2014). They use the Bible, practice Communion, and Sunday is their Sabbath (Zavada, Mennonite Beliefs and Practices, 2014). Today in the Mennonite church there is a wide variety of how it is practiced. It ranges from “plain” people or Old Order Mennonites to congregations that blend in to the general population (Houdmann).
Utah and the Mormon Culture In 1820, Joseph Smith had a vision in Palmyra, New York, of God and his son, Jesus Christ telling him to reorganize the church of Jesus Christ. During the next 10 years, Joseph was visited by other heavenly messengers, translated the Book of Mormon and established the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. Many years thereafter, the Mormons relocated from Nauvoo, Illinois because of religious persecution (PBS Online). In Illinois, Joseph Smith had succeeded in establishing a religion which brought together its followers both sociologically and economically.
Actually, “Mormon” is just a nickname for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. (Another nickname is the acronym LDS) A cursory glance at the church’s full name contains Christ’s name. By the very name of their church, members state their belief in Christ.
They believe God and Jesus are separate beings, they believe Jesus Christ is the son of God. Mormons believe that you get punished for your own sin, not Adam’s sin. If a child sins and they are below the age of eight the sin is unaccounted for. Which is also the age many children get baptised. Mormons believe in the Ten Commandments, praying often and reading the scriptures. They believe in following the law of chastity and the word of wisdom. Mormons don't drink coffee, tea, or alcohol because God says that these things will make our bodies unhealthy. Mormons believe in stages after death. The first stage is immediately after we die our soul is judged on how good it “behaved”. Mormons view life as a training ground for what comes after death. Then the soul gets sent to paradise or a prison. Mormons believe in going on missions to spread their religion, how long you are gone depends on your gender. Males are gone longer than females. Mormons believe in the hebrew bible, but they view of the stories a bit
On April 6, 1980, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka the Mormon Church) was founded. [It is interesting to note that according to Mormon doctrine (Doctrine and Covenants 20:1), April 6 is the birthday of Jesus Christ.] 10 years prior to this event, in 1820, fourteen-year-old Joseph Smith knelt in a quiet grove in upper New York state and prayed for guidance in choosing a church to join. According to LDS historical records, his prayer was answered by the visitation of two heavenly personages. One, the Heavenly Father, spoke to him and said, pointing to the other, "This is my Beloved Son. Hear Him!"
Religion, a term that is loosely defined as an idea or set of beliefs someone might look to or believe in, is thought to evoke many emotions when related to Jesus and his ideas. Every single person on earth looks at religion in a different way. When people start to have these different ideas or opinions about a religion they are also looking at Jesus in a different light than before. Religion and Jesus might be related to each other in some ways, but they are also different in other ways. Everyone has his or her own views and beliefs on how Jesus might view religion; some state Jesus loves the idea of religion while others state that he despises the idea and opinions of it.
What is religion? Each person’s definition of religion is different. Each person’s faith is different. This is a question that has been asked for centuries, and regardless of the answer given there is no right or wrong answer. Religion can be defined as a group of people who have shared beliefs who feel their life has purpose or meaning. This feeling or belief that their life has meaning can come from outside of themselves, as well as within. Taking this one step further, these shared beliefs put into action in the form of worship, can be easily identified because they happen regularly. It can be said the Primal religions were in fact not religions. Some may argue Confucianism is not a religion. Others may say Taoism is not a religion. However, one argument can be made. All three of these “religions” share “features.” Huston Smith, author of World’s Religions, says “six features of religion appear so regularly as to suggest that their seeds are in the human makeup.” These six features discussed in World’s Religions are as follows: authority, ritual, explanation, tradition, grace, and mystery (World’s, Page 67). First is authority, Smith argues religion is so complex that people will need assistance or guidance from those held in a higher light, or of a higher authority. Next is ritual, which can be happy (a wedding) or sad (a funeral), rituals are shared between people of the same religion in many forms as a sign of common beliefs. Following rituals, some explanation is required. Many of a religion’s followers ask for explanations, some ask, “What is my purpose in life?” Others may ask, “Who is God?” Depending on one’s religion, the questions or
Many people have varying ideas about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It has been said that the Mormons are a cult out to destroy the beliefs of the other Christian churches. Some believe that they are not a true Christian church, that they hide their beliefs from investigators of their religion, and they keep important details of their religion secret until after you have become a member. It is also said that they are not Christian because they use The Book of Mormon instead of the Bible.
Mormons have gone through a lot, have broken apart and come together several times while the different branches of Mormonism continue to grow and new branches may still form in the futures. One thing is known that the ‘new religion’ is strong and its believers continue to have faith. To outsides certain practices do seem questionable, yet one question remains, if it is part of Christianity or their own ‘new religion.’
These religions include Christianity, Islamic, Buddhism, Freemason and even pagans. Therefore basing on positionality, people are more likely to be biased and judged based on their religion. Thus it is important to understand different religious personalities of people in order to be able to interact well with people from all religious backgrounds.
Mormonism vs. Christianity How is Mormonism different from Christianity? Mormonism is so similar to Christianity that sometimes people think they took Christianity, renamed it to Mormonism, and started a “new religion”. Although many of the ideas of Mormonism come from Christianity, there are many differences in Mormonism. Differences occurred in the creation story, in sacred texts, in the ideas of God, views of humanity, and in ideas of death and the afterlife.
