C. S. Lewis’s Out of The Silent Planet masterfully explores the concept of what another inhabited planet could be like. The novel takes place on two separate planets, Earth and Malacandra (known to us as Mars). Earth is a planet filled with hate and selfishness, where humans cannot keep themselves from fighting each other. In contrast, Malacandra is a planet where three races live in peace and harmony without the corruption of hate and selfishness. The humans Weston and Devine come to Malaacandra because of their greed. They abduct Ransom, another human, and take him with them because they believe one of the alien races wants a human sacrifice. As the narrative unfolds, the environments of Malacandra and Earth significantly impact the characters' …show more content…
Malacandra is a beautiful planet where species coexist in harmony, in awe-inspiring environments. It is a beautiful and vibrant planet reminiscent of a Dr. Seuss book with fluffy trees and warm pink water, a world of purity and beauty unpolluted by the sin of humanity and humanity's bent nature. Malacandra is a bountiful planet where everyone's needs are met and gold flows through the water. It is a peaceful planet without war, where the three species live and work together in harmony. There are three intelligent species of Malaxcandra: the Hrossa, Pfifltriggi, and Sorn. The Hrossa are philosophical and have a great understanding of ships and waterfaring. They are the first species Ransom meets and they teach him the language of the planet throughout the story. Hrossa acts as a guide for Ransom and helps him to understand that just because something is alien doesn't mean it should be feared. Hrossa is a specialist in performing, dancing and poetry. The Hrossa believe that poetry should not be written down because it ruins the memory of it, not allowing the memory to grow. They have a …show more content…
Earth is a beautiful planet if not for human greed and destruction. Earth has been exploited for its resources and riches. Exploitation results in environmental degradation, including deforestation, pollution, and loss of biodiversity. Our planet is bountiful yet, many people still lack basic needs because of others' greed. Earth is filled with conflict, and characterized by wars, and strife, further disrupting its potential for peace and harmony. Wars, both past and present, have inflicted suffering and destruction, highlighting humanity's inability to coexist peacefully. The People of Earth portrayed in Out of the Silent Planet are bent men who came to Malacandra because of their greed, which causes Devine and Weston to abduct one of their own kin for what they would believe is a human sacrifice. Weston showcases the pride of humanity with his want to make humans live eternally, which although a noble intention is taken to absurd and horrible lengths. Weston fears the death of humanity and will do anything to preserve humanity, even destroying the peaceful races inhabiting Malacandra for no other reason than they aren't humans. His want for preservation is twisted as he says that it doesn't matter what humanity becomes as long as they can live forever and carry on their legacy. Devine is a prideful man who wants to plunder Malacandra’s gold called “Sun’s Blood” even
Out of the Silent Planet, by C.S Lewis, is an exciting tale of one man’s unintentional adventures in space. A philologist by the name of Dr. Elwin Ransom accidentally interrupts the plans of two scientists, Professor Weston and his partner Devine, and as a result is kidnapped and taken to Mars. The criminal pair intend to offer Ransom as a sacrifice, unbeknownst to their victim, but Ransom eventually discovers their evil plans and is determined to fight for his life. Ransom manages to escape from his captors once they land on the planet, but then finds himself alone on a strange planet that he knows nothing about. Ransom’s honor, curiosity, and bravery aid him throughout his journey in a terrifying but fantastic new world, leading him to discover
As a society, we focus some of our thoughts on how to preserve the Earth and different ways to recycle and keep it clean. Although we do have an effort into saving our home planet, we, as a whole race, don’t have our hearts in it. There are the people who are obsessive economists and worry about the world excessively and those who don’t care enough or at all. The two stories both present a possible outcome for our lack of effort in preserving the Earth in two different genres, fiction and nonfiction. Of the two stories “Silent Spring” and “If I Forget Thee, Oh Earth…”, the one i felt most affected by was Marvin in, “If
History is flush with examples of men who not only avoided evil, but did good; there are no famous examples of men who simply avoided the evil. The latter men will not try to do evil things, or great things, they won’t kill or save, they won’t try to please the Devil or give glory to God. Often this type inaction will be a worse sin that acting with sinful intent. “Idle hands are the Devil’s workshop.” Being virtuous requires striving for moral excellence and a desire to be Christ-like, as Christ is the most virtuous man to ever live. Thus the definition for virtue is two-fold, requiring an avoidance of doing evil, and a dedication to doing good. The Character Ransom in “Out of the Silent Planet” has the first quality, but struggles with
What seems to be a positive goal for man to have is actually the opposite, causing men to lose what makes them most different from animals, leaving them cruel and ruthless. The first 11 lines show this, but more specifically, lines 3-6 and 9-11 portray it the most. Lines 3-6 say that the world is “full of guilt and misery, and hast seen enough of all its sorrows, crimes, and cares, to tire thee of it, enter this wild wood and view the haunts of Nature.” This tells the reader that once one is fed up with the feelings that civilization gives them, they can go into nature. Once they realize how corrupt society really is, nature will be there. “Thou wilt find nothing here of all that pained thee in the haunts of men and made thee loathe thy life.” Lines 9-11 tells the readers that nature is not like civilization; nature is good and that one will not find the corruption of civilization in nature, they will not find the things that made them fed up. In nature, one will find the “wantonness of spirit”, but in civilization, one will find the “haunts of men”. In civilization, one will find problems that they think they cannot solve; in nature, one will find the answers to those same

Metaphorically speaking, McCarthy sets a realistic comparison to humanity’s physical journey through life. Obviously, the world doesn’t end on a daily basis. Its extremity is only meant to make the readers aware, not to compare the setting to everyday lives. McCarthy accomplishes this through both descriptive and figurative language throughout the novel. Most notably, the post-apocalyptic setting has brought up discussion. From the very first pages, readers are exposed to the desolate and bleak landscape McCarthy creates. Conditions so harsh, layers of ash conceal the past world and force the father and son to wear face masks for protection. Ash so thick, in fact, that the sun is obscured from sight and the oceans are no longer blue. Life and all vegetation are also slain from the extreme cold, leaving only rotting corpses scattered along the roadside. That being said, the father and son are among the few specks of life remaining, everything else lifeless and gray. Such extreme conditions may seem unthinkable to many. Humanity doesn’t want to talk about death or even the evil within us. Although, that’s exactly what McCarthy had evoked in his reader's minds. He understands the idea that human life can’t flourish if humans themselves can’t coalesce. In the novel, when times got tough, human instinct was in full tilt. Violence, selfishness, and even cannibalistic “bad guys” had
In conclusion, it is the innate nature of mankind to choose survival above all needs which brings out the hidden savage in all of us kept only in check by the artificial restraints placed upon mankind by society. The descent into savagery, man's inherent desire to survive over anything else and the need for civilization and order shows how society unnaturally holds everyone together. The aspiration to endure is an intrinsic response that may lay dormant until the chains of society and civilization are removed; when that day arrives, their dormant instincts will arise and bring about a regression back to that of a savage.
Linda Hogan’s Solar Storms and Cheryll Glotfelty’s criticism come together to depicts two very different cultural views through an unavoidable clash that occurs when their lives literally depend on it. There is the western culture that sees the earth as nothing more than a never ending resource without realizing that by their activities, they are at risk of creating their own demise. Then there is the indigenous culture that personifies the land. They see the earth as an entity that they have made a bond with; a bond that now lay broken. The book also utilizes silence not only as a symbol for something much bigger but also as a way to craft identity through the views of culture on a forged path of oppression, pain, and inner strength.
...of the world, they will act like lords of the world. And, given a story to enact in which the world is a foe to be conquered, they will conquer it like a foe, and one day, inevitably, their foe will lie bleeding to death at their feet, as the world is now." (Quinn, 85) Here Ishmael argues that civilization believes that in order to make the world a better place, one has to conquer it. When a natural disaster happens it is viewed as an attack by nature, as it disrupts the sense of control that mankind has over the planet. When leaver’s view these events are as unfortunate incidents that they need to adapt to in order to survive. What Baraka does for Ishmael is provide real life examples of the taker’s habits of expansion and dominance and the leaver’s desire to live a simple side by side with nature. Thank you for time and I hope you have a great day.
The purpose of Mr. Hale’s expedition evolves from searching for witchcraft to searching for truth. As each individual changes, society follows suit. Again, these changes might not always be benevolent; they could be despicable. However, it is irrelevant because both types of adjustments help develop society as a whole. The common saying “learn from your mistakes and move on” can apply to almost any human, even those who make poor decisions when it comes to wealth. Mistakes cause change. As a result of change, development occurs and humanity can better themselves as a benefit for future generations.

During the industrial revolution of England, humans engaged in monotonous work and lost harmonious unity with nature. In the nineteenth century, when the poet William Wordsworth wrote his sonnet “The world is too much with us,” the aspects of industrialized society had changed a factory worker’s life, leaving no time or the desire to enjoy and take part in nature. In his Petrarchan sonnet, Wordsworth criticizes humans for losing their hearts to materialism and longs for a world where nature is divine. In the first four lines, Wordsworth angrily addresses the theme of the sonnet, which is that the modern industrialized age has lost connection with nature. He states that humans are doing too much to the world.
It presents the readers with intriguing, thought-provoking questions as to the ambiguity of morality and mankind's place in nature. Through
Set of current moral spectacles, this reprehensible. Nevertheless, its justified fully in the adventure of the stupidity of the counterparts, which are vengeful, greedy and arrogant. The mission statement is such obvious: Greed and hostility pays rare, while goodness and wisdom is the right way to adopt greater situations (although the goal is to self-adulation themselves, and not to unconditionally be kind and valuable without ulterior motives.) And stupid and ignorant people who have shorter range than considering their own cheat shafts, ports easily in impasse.
