Being Homeless In College In Eleanor J. Bader’s essay “Homeless on Campus”, she informs the readers about both the struggles and accomplishments of homeless college students. She talks a lot about the different kinds of obstacles, risks, and the negative and positive impacts. Bader walks us through many different situations other students have gone through in the past. The beginning of the reading was about a student named Aesha. Aesha was a single mother who had to leave her home due to an abusive boyfriend. She never felt safe and was always couch surfing, trying to find somewhere safe for her and her baby boy. We slept on benches, and it was very crowded. Bader made a lot of good connections to things I am familiar with, which is what made the essay so attention-grabbing. As a high school student who is trying to pick a college, my nerves are getting to me when it comes to thinking about loans, scholarships, living, classwork, and how I am going to manage all of the stress. If every person reads this essay, I think it could change some of the way colleges think. When I go to college I hope I can have access to those resources and to have teachers who are supportive like the ones those students have. My biggest response and further thinking after reading this essay is, how is this going to change in the future? Are people going to read this and realize how many students struggle to get through college, and are they going to try and change the way things work? Those two things have made me think if there was anything I could do to help others in college if the administrators were not going to change anything.
