Love is defined as “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties” (Merriam-Webster). Despite this simple definition, love is one of the most complex words in the English language. Love is the most sought-after feeling in the world, yet it is nearly impossible to describe what it truly feels like. Love comes in many varieties. However, all true love boils down to one common trait: Caring about someone else more than oneself. There is good reason that nearly everyone wants to find love someday. It is a feeling unlike any other; an experience that permeates all aspects of one’s life. The world appears more vibrant, and everything is upbeat. Many people believe that when two people are in love, they’ll be all over each other all the time, and showering one another with countless expensive gifts. These acts don’t necessarily mean two people are in love, and on the other hand, they don’t mean they are not. Love manifests itself in infinite ways, and only the two people experiencing it can know for sure whether it is real. As Ellen G. White said, “True love is not a strong, fiery, impetuous passion. It is, on the contrary, an element calm and deep.” Love is present in the most basic of gestures: Going out of one’s way to get her favorite snack, nursing her when she’s sick, holding her while she cries, giving her the last piece of pizza, writing her a poem, picking her a flower from the roadside, making time for her in a busy day, or going somewhere boring just because she wants to. These are just a tiny sample of the millions of ways one can show his love for that special someone.
In conclusion, nearly everyone wants to find someone to put above himself, and support “’til death do them part.” Love is the most pure and natural feeling the world has to offer. Everyone who falls in love is a better person for having experienced it, even if the ending of the love story wasn’t a happy one. Being “head over heels” teaches some of the most important lessons life holds: in selflessness, in compassion, and in self-discovery.
