Introduction
There is a human need to belong in close relationships, and if the need is not met, a variety of problem occurs. As a social being, we are directly or indirectly dependent on each other to meet emotional, social and physical needs. There have been some ups and downs in my adult close relationship and attachment style. In this paper, I will attempt to discuss my individual adult’s relationship experiences and the adaptive approaches I have taken to ensure a healthy relationship with my partner.
Theory
Culture plays a significant role on how one sees and interprets close relationships. Some culture places more enhances on relationship while other culture may not. One interpretation and understanding of close relationship and attachment style could be based on one’s previous experiences or encounters. According to Climenhage, (2017) there are six components of intimate relationships which included: knowledge, caring, interdependence, mutuality, trust and commitment. In that, child’s attachment style is exclusively based on the attachment figure’s caregiving system. This implies that infant’s attachment style is solely complementary. That is infants can seek attachment support from their attachment figures but are not able to reciprocate the support in return to their caregivers. This is quite different when compared to adult’s attachment style. Adults can provide care and support to their infants but do not seek care in return from their infants. In adult’s relationships, intimate partners or peers, attachment, support and care are reciprocal. In adult’s relationships, both partners are both the attachment and caregiving systems.
