Demographic Details: Mr. S.S is a thirty five year old male. He lives in Bangalore with her mother and elder brother. He has been diagnosed with major depression and is currently on medicines for the same. Presenting problem: The client is self-referred for treatment for his depression. He is concerned about dealing with his depression. He has had suicidal thoughts and finds it difficult concentrate, engage in day to day tasks. He is really anxious to find a job. He has hard time connecting with his family, especially his brother and has only one friend he can rely on. He keeps having arguments with his brother who constantly blames him for not contributing to family’s finance and moreover costing them money for his own treatment. The client …show more content…

He believed that we are shaped by our perceptions and the goals that we strive to achieve our ideal self. The client also possessed an ideal self-image and has always tried to adhere to it, for instance, how he has to be provider for the family and be a good son by taking good care of his mother. The client also possesses inferiority feelings in relation to his elder brother and seeks out to develop himself in par with his brother. According to Adlerian therapy our experiences are a lot to do with our lifestyle. The client had a restricted relationship with his father as he was very disciplined and strict. He shared a loving relationship with the mother which started to fade away as she started to fall sick. His interaction with his brother who was always dominating and always an achiever probably marked his inferiority feelings and he developed basic mistakes such as ‘I am a failure’ or ‘I am not good’. This will help in identifying the client’s basic mistakes or misconceptions about self and life about which the therapist would then help in gaining insight. This is done by directly stating the observations about the client’s behavioral and emotional patterns and how it is affecting them. The therapist may say ‘it looks like you are often worried about failing’ and the client can then reflect about it and discuss it with the therapist without getting defensive. Another technique that could be used is questioning where the therapist might ask ‘if you didn’t have your brother blaming you, what would be different in your life’. This will allow the client’s to look into the future and to gain insight into his behavior towards the problem. Once the client recognizes his own patterns of misconceptions, the therapist would engage in encouragement. The therapist would encourage the client not to focus on what the client doesn’t possess but value what the client has achieved.
