For my church visit I went to an 11:30 church service on November 16th at a church called Willamette Christian Church with one of my best friends Shelby. It was a non-denominational church with a large amount of attendees. At first when we came into the church service we both felt that we had just walked into a concert, the lights were off, there was a massive amount of people, it was in a gymnasium, and it had no religious symbols besides the lightshow of crosses behind the band. The band was fantastic they seemed like a real christian rock band, which was a huge change from my church with elderly people that are so deaf they would not be able to tell the difference between a fire alarm and a cow bell. The band probably played about three songs for a span of 15-20 minutes while people mosied on in from getting their caffeine fix from the friendly neighborhood …show more content…
This was followed by the greetings in which we awkwardly shake hands with the people around us, who we would soon forget the faces of. The Pastor made his grand appearance onto the stage soon after his name was Andrew he wore nothing that made him stand out as a Pastor actually his shirt was rather wrinkled. His sermon was about 30 minutes long and was about staying awake in one 's faith, during which he quoted many Bible passages but did no official reading from the Bible. During this time many people had their phones out, one lady in particular had her phone out taking from what I could tell was notes on his sermon. The sermon followed quickly by the sharing of the bread and wine, this apparently took an army of people to do because of the sheer size of the congregation. They then started the singing back up which is when Shelby and I decided to take our leaving knowing that they would sing a few songs and afterwards many of them would be dispersing to their vehicles to cause
On Friday November 15, 2013, I attended a concert that I found very interesting. It took place at 7:30 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. The group performing was the Erie Chamber Orchestra but as a special the Slippery Rock University Concert Choir was also there.
This experience was really out of my comfort zone. It was hard to be an outsider and not prepared for what was to come and not speaking one of the languages used to understand the entire service. This service learning project gave me the opportunity to try a new church and gain a deeper respect for a different religion. Everyone at the service was very educated on speaking the sacred texts and participating in the rituals practiced. I hope to have gained a better understanding for those who are new to religions and are nervous to come to a worship service. I will make more of an effort to be welcoming and accommodating to those who are new to our church.
In my paper I will talk about my visit to The Community Church at Murphy's Landing (CCML). I have chosen this particular Church because it is a family church type and my neighbor goes there and she encouraged me to go with her. I went there with my neighbor on April 6, 2014.This church is an appropriate for this assignment because the people there are welcoming me with an open heart and they are willing to help and provide me with information. When I visit the Church’s site I read these words “We know visiting a new church can be intimidating. But, we want to help you to be as comfortable as possible when and if you join us”. The people gather in the church weekly to glorify God in joyful worship. The expressions of worship on CCML take many forms a prayer, a hymn of reverent awe, a guitar ringing with a chorus of praise, or a warm handshake and a welcoming smile. Their weekly services begin at 9:30 each Sunday at church. Also, they have weekly podcast if anyone wants to listen online. They have many types of services for parents, kids and students. People at CCML were so friendly; they gather around me and start welcoming me, one by one. People there introducing themselves to me, one after another and provide me with their contact information and help. Then we start talking about the church services and Christianity in particular. The mission of CCML was knowing, growing and loving. They seek to live out our mission by worshipping together as a local community of believers, growing in spiritual maturity through discipleship, education, and small groups, caring for one another within the context of the larger church body and small groups, and Communicating the love of Christ to our world, both through local outreach and global mis...
In conclusion, it was a very unique experience for me to attend this concert. It was my first time listening to music in a church. The music was wonderful and played brilliantly. I now realize how talented some of the women composers were throughout the history of music. The experience of listening to such wonderful music firsthand was an honor. I hope to attend one in the near future.
The influence of secular rock music on contemporary Christian music has awakened a generation of listeners who enjoy being in the “gray” area. There’s a generation out there that does not want the label of “Jesus freak.”
The concert venue was a Methodist church, as I previously stated, however the church was round because they also use it as a synagogue and a mosque. Due to the size of the church, the performers were only a few feet away from the audience. This intimate, and almost informal, setting seemed to allow the concert goers to connect more than if it were in a concert hall. Most of the audience were older adults, a few young adults, and one small child in a stroller. Before Trio Da Kali performed, there was an opening act. Kinobe opened the show by playing many instruments,
Once the service started, my friend showed me where the schedule for the service was and what each number meant. There were different colors of numbers in the book and those indicated what section the reading or song was coming from. This was different from the church that I attend because we have a choir and a band that plays the songs and if you wish to join in you can but for the Catholic Church there is, no choir and the members of the church are the ones who sing. After some singing, the priest came up to talk and this is very different from what I expected. I was used to flipping through the channels and seeing the catholic churches with the priest who were a ...
The second parishoner to show her gratitude was another older women. She was wearing a flowered dress with a big floppy hat. She asked that we sign the official guest book and requested that we fill out an information card. She had a smile and a heart each made of pure gold. She took great pride in her job. The church had named her "the greeter" over 21 years ago, and according to her version of the story she had not missed a Sunday yet. We took our cards and moved into the sanctuary.
The church external appearance was quite different than other churches that I have seen. It was basically a big white stucco block with a gold dome on top and four decorated spikes on each corner of the building that surrounded the dome. The people of course were all Greek and were very well dressed. Most of the men and boys all wore suits, and If not they had some kind of vest on. I don’t know if this was some kind of rule or tradition, but it mostly seemed as a respect to God. The women all wore the basic dresses, and all the skirts fell down below the knee. Everybody was proper and ordered. As I walked in the church I entered a lobby of some kind. What I saw hear was something like social hour. Everybody was in there. They were all speaking Greek, and I felt as if I was in a family reunion party. The children were all together; the adults talked together and the young adults all were together. The way they all socialize is when someone comes up to say hello, they give each other a kiss on the cheek and a hug. These people are all very close to each other. It seems as if the church is the center of their lives. I admire that trait as well. To enter the auditorium you must enter this little room, which has a piece of garment from St. Constantine and St. Helen. Also there were candles lit. As they walked through this little room they lit a candle and knelt down for a moment to pray, and then touched each garment and made a cross over their chest.
It may seem a little bit strange, but my favorite place in town in none other than this beautiful Evangelic Church. However, it wasn’t always so.
At Victory there was no alter, marble or stain glass windows it just looked like an auditorium it made it feel like you were not at church. My teammates love this church because you get to express yourself to the Lord while you are singing up to him, I thought it was very interesting how casual it was there, not many people were dressed up. The pastor was wearing kakis which surprised me because at my church the priests are always wearing white robes. During the ceremony it was hard to follow what he was saying because the pastor went off into tangents about the sections of the bible he was reading, within my church there really isn’t a whole lot that is read from the bible, and honestly I have not been to my church at home since last Easter because of being at school. When I was at Victory church there was not Eucharist like there is at my catholic church. We talked about this within class about how each church celebrated Jesus’s body differently, some do not use it, others use it each mass, and it differs for each church about who takes the Eucharist and who can
Oxford 2017 describes pilgrimage as “a journey to a place of particular interest or significance.” In a religious sense, pilgrimages are sacred journeys used as a rite of passage to transcend one’s current spiritual position. A pilgrimage may be undertaken to have an emotional or holy experience or strengthen and further understand one’s faith in their beliefs. The profane form of pilgrimage is considered ritual tourism, which is to experience culture and recreate on a pilgrimage, but not as an actual religious pilgrim.
The people there were all extremely nice and would try to help me understand. They understood and accepted the fact that I wasn’t religious, but was showing interest in their faith. There were not as much people there as I had expected, but that might have been because it was a smaller church. It also wasn’t as racially diverse as I had expected. I thought that because it is the world’s biggest religion, that it
The purpose of this paper is to discuss a service that I got to attend that was different from my own religious tradition. I decided to go with my chosen topic because to be honest I had never experienced or thought to experience a different type of church service other than the one I grew up in. I grew up in a Christian home and attended a non-denominational Christian church on a regular basis. I just never felt the need to experience something that was different. So I decided to attend a mass at a Catholic church. I had been to weddings in a Catholic church and even funerals with a Catholic involvement but not an actual mass.
That is our cue to walk into the church and sit down. I’m amazed at the number of people there. Every single pew is filled, and there are people sitting in spare chairs in the back. We sing hymns, say prayers, and listen to speeches, but one speech stood out from the rest. Reverend Owen LAST NAME is my uncle’s best friend from elementary school. Before he even starts his speech people are crying when they realize that he and my uncle are wearing the same suits they wore to his and Stephanie’s wedding. The main message of his speech was pals, and the huge community that my aunt had built around herself. We laughed and cried, and I honestly felt moved by his
