In the article "What Happened to Empathy" Xochitl Gonzalez talks about how empathy is diminishing within the human race but specifically talking about the U.S. Xochitl uses lack-of-people problems and social apps to prove how they are causing a lack of empathy. When it comes to the lack-of-people problem, Xochitl mentions how in San Francisco it was recently said that taxis will experiment with driverless cars. With the lack of human interaction, there is a lack of empathy towards anyone. As in 9/11, she says how even though the people inside were strangers, she still grieved the loss of their lives because of the simple interaction she had with them. With empty cities, driverless taxis, and social app usage increasing, Xochitl blames this for the lack of empathy since humans don't interact with each other. I believe Xochitl is correct. The lack of human interaction diminishes empathy. As a young adult, I can say that social media is normalizing contact through apps and not in person. As Xochitl mentioned in her article, Americans who use social media have been found to display reduced empathy and depression has been linked to the use of dating apps and binge-watching TV alone. The idea of not interacting with another human being takes away the instinct to socialize with people in real life. If you were to even talk to your neighbor once and ask them how they are doing, there is already some sort of empathy towards them. The idea of just not speaking to anyone makes us not care about them. That's why when there's a mass shooting, some people just genuinely don't care. The lack of empathy causes the human race to desensitize towards other human beings.
