People get the yin yang symbol tattooed on their bodies or draw it on paper, but not many know its true meaning. My initial assumption was that the symbol was solely a captivating image. I drew it all over the margins of my homework and on the blank spaces of tests. Imagine a Chemistry exam on the Periodic Table of Elements covered in different sized yin yang symbols. I was struck by its simplicity. My fascination grew due to the fact that I had discovered something I could easily draw. It is known as a fundamental concept in traditional Chinese medicine. The belief was that the universe was made up of only two forces. Following this notion, it was believed that everything in existence could be divided into yin and yang. Many people state that it is considered one of the most used forms of medicine. I have always heard my mom say that some people have a “black and white way of thinking”, but I never understood the concept until now. The Chinese believed that there were only two forces in our universe. This would mean that everything is either right or wrong. There is no in between. The two colors in the symbol never overlap to create the color grey. They are both independent but cannot be separated. The two halves make up the symbol as a whole. No matter how you divide the symbol, the black part will always have a piece of the white part and vice versa. They are two separate entities that balance each other.
