What does public service mean? I used to think that it meant working for the government. To think beyond that narrow scope was not something that I have ever considered until Public Administration 100. “Public Service jobs are available in multiple parts of the U.S. economy: the public sector, the nonprofit sector, even the private sector.”(Krasna, 2010, p. 26) Public service jobs in the private sector is a baffling idea, while public service jobs in the non-profit sector are a little more understandable for me. People who work in public service are working for the greater good of all citizens regardless of their position in life. All kinds of people work in public service. Working together advocating for those that are not able to advocate for themselves such as infants, children and youth, many agencies help these children grow up in safe environments. (Krasna, 2010, p. 62) In the private sector, businesses large and small can do a great deal of public service. According to an article in Conscious Magazine there is a handful of small business that are stepping up all over the world providing education, training and income for survivors of sex trafficking as well as young women who are at risk for the cycle to begin or begin again. (Keith n.d.) Frequenting these business can also technically make you a public servant as well in a stretched and broad view of what public service can be. My plans are very broad at this point as I work my way through college, raise my children and work full time. I plan to continue to educate those that I know and meet on the lack of laws in place to protect the victims of child sex trafficking. I have learned that many people, including those in law enforcement did not know that laws protecting the victims from being prosecuted are rare. Education is a huge step in the right direction. I will continue to volunteer and encourage others to volunteer in the shelters where these children are recovering once they are rescued.
