What I feel like the title states are what Maya feels like her culture and gender knows. She is faced with the concept of being African American and what she feels like her 'place' is. Maya feels like she will always be under the 'white folks' rein no matter what she does. She also feels caged is by what her gender is, constantly questioning if she fits what a woman should be or act like.
