Andrew Solomon has some valid arguments in his article, and he tries to persuade the readers through logos, pathos, and ethos. Solomon wants the readers to understand the importance of reading, and how its decline can be harmful to the nation. To reinforce his arguments, Solomon shares a variety of examples, for instance, he mentions that reading helps improve memory and concentration, and the decline of reading is causing mental “atrophy.” He also calls upon the readers to take some sort of action to raise reading rates and help the society. This can grant the readers a form of power and control over the crisis that will lead to an em...
The essay Staying Awake by Le Guin agrees with the NEA essays to a point, but she takes a different approach to present her essay, she also does not believe the reading decline to be as much of a gloom and doom situation as the NEA essays do, her thesis statement is “I want to question the assumption that books are on the way out. I think books are here to stay. It’s just not that many people ever did read them.’’(Le Guin p34) She says that readers have never been in the majority so why should that change now? (Le Guin p 34) Le Guin uses history as her background data she refers to the “century of the book,’’ (Le Guin p34) which was the peak of our reading abilities after that period of time the reading decline began. Being literate equals having control and separates the people who have power and control from those who do not. While the NEA essa...

Considerably, literature is a form of escapism. This came to me from a young age, where I became engrossed by the concept of story-telling. Whether it be through the natural world conveyed by romantic poets like Shelley and Wordsworth or the complex characters found in prose, like in the works of Dickens and Hardy; comprehending how plots are reflective of life intrigued me to devise my own.
In the passage Why Literature Matters by Dana Gioia, the author explains how literature and reading is beginning to drop. He builds an argument on how the decline of reading in america will have a negative effect on society. Dana Gioia uses facts and evidence to support his claim.
Some people are unaware of what literature really means. Literature is referring to something that deals with a body of written works; within poems, plays and novels. Literature is used to explore human experiences in all possibilities. It is something that deals with our most apprehensiveness such as death, family, religion, good and evil, character, courage, and more. “While the information is represented in abstract form and generalized: facts, statistics, and data” (Gillespie, 20). It offers a different type of learning than just collecting information by, requiring us to experience things and participate. When looking for literature in stories you want to look for irony, symbolism, the theme, setting, main characters and supporting characters.
In the article 10 Benefits of Reading, the author Lana Winter-Hebert of Lifehack.org explained why reading is a mental exercise and can improve your mental ability. My reading habits are fairly frequent. I read a lot of magazines and online articles, but I never miss out on a good novel. The atmosphere of a bookstore or library is so comfortable and that drives me to read more, too. I am currently reading two books; The Name of This Book is Secret and If I Should Die Before I Wake. Considering I am constantly reading as recreation or school-wise, I think I read enough.
Although the background of a classic work is written in a specific time period, it can apply to any person of any era. It can help one to draw connections and comparisons from their own culture to the setting of the text. Reading classic literature can also expand one’s creative knowledge as they are accessing another era of people that thought somewhat or completely differently.
...ruly realize the false reality that literature made. The reader also has a huge role into expressing these false realities to the public, which can cause prejudice in the near future. People need to be open and understanding of different people and situations. Perspective plays a huge role into the thinking of a human mind, and readers should be more aware of the information’s brought upon different ways. Readers should not come up with a preconceived idea based upon the beliefs of other people perspective but should experience these different societies.
Literature allows reflection. It helps us to shape our own thoughts. It builds on rich histories of thought and expression. Literature represents and explores the ways in which the world is viewed and experienced by people in that society.

“Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become,” said C.S. Lewis, noted author. This quote, to me, is the most appropriate description of the importance of literature in our lives. Literature reminds us of stories, epics, sacred scriptures and classical works of the ancient and modern times, in which the book To Kill a Mockingbird clearly does. Literature is defined as the body of written works of a language, period or culture, produced by scholars and researchers, specialized in a given field. Why is literature important? Well, let’s see as stated in the quotation by C.S. Lewis, literature not only describes reality but also adds to it. Yes, literature is not merely a depiction of reality; it is rather a value-addition. Literary works are portrayals of the thinking patterns and social norms prevalent in society. They are an illustration of the different facets of common man's life. Literary works serve as a food for thought and a tonic for imagination and creativity. Exposing an individual to good literary works, is equivalent to providing him/her with the finest of educational opportunities. On the other hand, the lack of exposure to literary works is equal to depriving an individual from an opportunity to grow as an individual. To Kill a Mockingbird provides its readers with the ‘finest of educational opportunities’ and that is why it is an important literary work. Harper Lee’s book is a powerful literary work because of the following literary devices employed: Setting, Allegory, and point of view. However before one can dissect the devices used, one must h...
