It all started with a simple phone call from David, asking if Susan wanted to go on a picnic. She was so ecstatic that I didn't bother to think about what would happen. Susan McConnel is naive because trusts too easily, shows lack of good judgment and shows lack of wisdom. The first reason Susan is naive is that she trusts way too easily people she doesn’t know that well. Like for example, David, the guy she has had a crush for a while but has never talked to him before the picnic. She just trusted him, that he wouldn’t let anything happen when he asked her to a picnic and she assumed he was a good guy, she let him lead her into trouble. This is the first reason why she is naive. The second reason she is naive is that she show lack of good judgement. She just went along with the group of seniors as if it were just a normal thing for her to be included in anything with them. died. So if I was in her situation in the book, I would have acted like I was totally into the plan, but I would have gone behind the groups back and told a trusted adult. Margot goes to school with classmates that resent her. They hate her for having seen the sun, something they wanted so badly. This jealousy led to an overwhelming hatred that they were reminded of any time they saw her. Her classmates let their hatred take over and they locked her in a closet as revenge for the pain she had caused them all. Although these stories parallel each other very well there are a few differences between them. Perhaps the biggest difference between them is the fact that one of the characters overcomes the evil presence in her life and the other does not (Theriot). Connie was not able to overcome the force of evil in the form of Arnold Friend, but Little Red Riding Hood was able to foil the wolf’s plans to lure her in. Either way both of these girls would have been better off if they had just followed that age old childhood rule; never talk to strangers.

Allison obviously lacked the respect of others, for she had no friends whatsoever prior to her time spent in this detention. She also has nervous ticks, such chewing her nails, and played with her hair. Brian was another case of insecurity. The influence of self-concept was strong with Brian Johnson for he had no sense of self. He could not meet the standards of his desired self and was therefore unhappy with himself as a person.
Connie has the need to be viewed as older and as more mature than she really is, all the while still displaying childlike behavior. She shows this childlike behavior by “craning her neck to glance in mirrors [and] checking other people’s faces to make sure her own was all right” (Oates 323). This shows that Connie is very insecure and needs other people’s approval. Although on one side she is very childish, on the other side she has a strong desire to be treated like an adult. Developing character is something that comes with time. I believe that there are three major things that effect how people develop their character—where they are from, which includes their financial status; how they are raised; and the character of the people that have had the most influence on their lives. Sylvia, in Toni Cade Bambara’s "The Lesson," is very much influenced by all of these factors. Sylvia’s living in the slums and being poor makes her defensive and judgmental. Her parents not being around much leaves her without the attention and discipline that children need to develop to their fullest. Lastly, her friends and Miss Moore also have a great influence on how Sylvia thinks and acts, and lead Sylvia to be observant but also angry and stubborn. All of these characteristics not only determine Sylvia’s personality, but also are the basis for why I think Sylvia will not apply Miss Moore’s lesson.
