In typical novels, many of the symbols in the Heart of Darkness are used as symbolizing the same things. Light is normally a symbol of knowledge and darkness symbolizes evil. White normally symbolizes purity and black is typically death. In Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of darkness, these symbols differ from what a reader is used to them representing. Along with symbolism, in the novel, the white man dehumanizes the black man in the Congo where the novel takes place.
While reading the Heart of Darkness there is many times that the author uses the term darkness. When reading, you can use the context to assume Conrad uses darkness to represent the dark side in humanity and also colonization. Throughout the novel, Conrad shows us that appearances can be misinterpreted and deceptive. For example, the map of Africa which Conrad made uncharted. When the map is drawn, Marlow can see that the continent is unknown for the most part because it appears white on the paper.
