The arrival of the Spanish was an event that dramatically marked a social and economic change in America. Although the Spanish arrival was somewhat beneficial, I believe that it was more detrimental to humanity. The Spanish arrival brought many diseases which affected Native Americans since they were forced to work in the fields and most Spaniards treated them badly. A specific example of cruelty was when Columbus cut off Native American’s hands and tied them around their necks to threaten them and display their attitude and power. Native Americans were also forced to give up their culture and traditions, only to adopt the Spanish concept. Many were forced to convert their religion to Christianity. It was beneficial because the Spanish were able to discover new land and resources, but overall there were more cons than pros. …show more content…

Little do many people know, he used questionable methods to gain his fame. Christopher Columbus was thought to be the first European to sail to America in 1492. He sailed from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, landing in the new world of the Americas and getting credit for “discovering America”. He sailed on three ships, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Columbus originally sailed west in search for a trade route to Asia to get spices, but ended up in South America. When he got there he thought that he had discovered India, but he landed in the Bahamas. Columbus’ first voyage began on August 3,1492. The Spanish monarchs were intrigued with his discoveries so they went out and tried to discover the same thing. Their main goal was to find spices and wealth. They got some ships and over 1,000 men set sail in October
