Negatives Outcomes of Part Time Jobs Parents are wondering if it is a good idea for their children to get a part time job while in high school. People argue students should not get a job while in high school because it could have a bad impact in their lives by not being able to administer the money they earn in a good way, lowering their GPA, distracted them from school assignments, increase high stress levels and eventually the students take decision to drop out of school. According to the article Working at McDonald’s having a job while in college instead of helping the student develop working skills that could help them in future jobs it does not create any important skills. Having a job can decrease the time spent in studying which can …show more content…
The purpose of going to school is to later find a job but this could be an obstacle in the students thinking by believing why should they keep attending school if they have a job already. Earning money at the age can be dangerous, parents should be aware of what their children are spending their money on. At the time they believe that the money they are earning is a good amount but because they are not paying rent or bills. But students need to realize that as they grow up and perhaps create a family that money would no be enough to leave a decent life with a minimum …show more content…
By having a job your time dedicated to school decreases because the student has new responsibilities. A personal experience that I have that supports my point is of my best friend and I we attended community college for a year together. The first semester we have all classes together and we both were getting good grades but as soon as she got a part time job everything changed. We used to study together for classes because we had the same major but suddenly because of her job she did not have time to meet and work in the assignments. She made the mistake of putting her job as the most important thing and placing her educational goal in a second term. The results appear immediately when we took the first exam after she started working her grade change dramatically from earing A’s and B’s on test she began to get C’s. As a result of her grades getting lower, she started to lose motivation to school and started working more hours which eventually lead her to miss classes. She asked me if I wanted to work there with her but I said no because I wanted to focus on college and did not want any distraction. I saw her transformation from being an honor roll student to no caring about school to make the study short two months after she started working she dropped
Most kids that have graduated high school have never been educated on the subject of personal finance, so they don’t know things like how to pay bills, or even how to do something as simple as applying for a job. According to a family friend of mine, Ron Hart; who happens to also be an award-wining author and TV/radio commentator, believes that students in high school don’t learn anything about how to get a job or get prepared financially. He states that, “ Students should prepare for a job. Maybe, instead of taking a fifth field trip to the Trail of Tears site, do one to learn about real jobs in an area they might want.” Hart believes that most basic high schools aren’t teaching students how to become financially stable for their future, which can cause major issues. He claims that “few schools teach about the value of hard work, ingenuity, gumption and entrepreneurship. Those lessons are as rare as Donald Trump bumper stickers in the faculty parking lot.” Hart also goes on to talk about how high school does not prepare you for life the same way college will. There are so many more lessons to learn there that people are missing out on. College is very important due to the fact that it will teach students more skills about finance and job seeking that most high schools don’t. In college, kids will learn how to save and budget their money, pay for their own expenses, and prioritize their needs verses their wants. Learning financial responsibility is also something that kids will carry with them throughout their jobs and their life. Having more freedom to understand the concepts of person finance will allow students to make mature decisions while easing their way into real world
Jobs won’t only support teens for the things they want, but it can help benefit for the things they need. The first things teens think of for their future are going to college and getting their first car. But, let’s say there’s a well educated thirteen-year-old, raised in a low-income family, who has plans on going to college. There’s no way their family can support him to go to college, and its funds could be over-whelming. The only way they could go to college is if they started saving at an early age. Therefore, if they got a job at the age they were at now, they’d be on their way to college by the time they graduate high school. Or, another example would be, if a teen wanted to get their first car on their sixteenth birthday. As you may know, many teens don’t get things handed to them on a silver platter, so they’d have to buy that car themselves. They might be old enough to drive, but they just turned the legal working age. Once they get a job, they’d have to wait at least a year to have enough money for the car as well as its insurance.
Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.
Once a person graduates from high school they are left with a difficult decision, wither to go to college or not. Some families this is not an option, their kid will go no matter what, but many students do not want to go to school and have so much student debt by the time they finish that they will have to pay off that they decide that college is not worth it. According to Craig Smith in his article in Education Digest he says, “too many families cannot afford to send their children to college so the student is left with making the decision on wither to go to college and collect debt or just skip college altogether” (Smith 42). He has a good point. Too many students feel like they have to pay so much yet they are not really getting much out of it. Smith later on in his article states, “We must stop balancing our state and institutional budgets on the backs of students and families” (Smith 46). School should not be all about money, it should be about helping the students get the education that they need so they can make it out in the big world. If a student is so worried about how they are going to pay their school bill they are not going to be focusing on their class work and it ...
Students spend four years of their lives attending high school. Going through high school is mandatory as it prepares them for college and strength to face “the real world.” Having part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among high school students and many students follow this trend as well. Moreover, there are some pros and cons attached with it. Though it may seem like working throughout high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for “the real world.” Although some people believe that the primary duty of a student is studying, I am of the opposite position. I strongly support the idea that high school students should work throughout high school. This is because they can earn money, become responsible and get experience.
But many low-income students not only have a full-time course schedule, they also have jobs where they work more than 30 hours per week. Approximately one-quarter of college students’ work while attending school and have both a full course-load and a full-time job (Carnevale, Smith, & Melton, 2015). Working helps students with the living costs as well as tuition and can help students learn skill sets that many employers prefer. However, there are problems with having full-time work while going to college.
I think that working at McDonald’s doesn’t teach high school students to save, but it depends on that person and how wise can they be to spend their hard earning money. Teenagers having a job allows them have the responsibility to support themselves without depending on their parent. High school students can still work and go to school at the same time and learn how to save money for college tuition. Therefore, working at McDonald is not a bad idea or waste of time nor it doesn’t determine our “American Dream”. I think that any type of job experience can’t predict our
For those people who have no purpose, college is just a place they waste their money, but for students who have purpose; like to be a doctor, teacher, engineer, and etc. Those students need to attend school to cultivate specific skill for the future. If they can make benefit from learning to their future, it is worth it going to school and being educated. According to McArdle, student loans is an “investment in yourself.” If students investigate for and success in their life, that is great achievement. If a student become a doctor, he or she must have more than enough money to pay back the debt. Also, college is the place to learn or prepare for job. When I asked my friend why he is studying at college, he answered because he wants to be a dentist. He told me that in order to be a dentist, he needs to finish college and university, and after that he has to go to dental school. In this case, he is learning because he needs specific area of skill for his job, so he gets education to get job. In my opinion, college is the place where students progress for what they want to be and at the same time they have to learn whatever they need for themselves to get a job, so they have enough time to prepare for their
With the cost of education rising and no stop in sight, many students are beginning to question the worthiness of a college education. It is commonly known that individuals who go to school will make more money over their life time compared to someone who does not. This is a great motivator for many wanting to go. An article written by The Economist
Jayson Boyers stated that "having a college education can make big differences in some people 's lives" (The Huffington Post Newspaper, 2012). People who do college education often get high level and high paying jobs. The main reason for why students feel hesitant to attend college after they graduate from high school is because they worry about the price of schooling and they prefer to have a job instead to make fast money. Although, people who graduated from high school often are only able to receive jobs at fast food restaurants, clothing stores, etc. When people are able to earn more than enough money to have a stable life they are able to be less stress-free and enjoy their lives more. People who often work in retail jobs face the risk of not making enough money to buy food and also pay their rent. The money that people earn in retail jobs takes a very long time to save up in order to go to college. Alternatively, the world is very competitive and people, truthfully, do have trouble succeeding and even surviving day to day. The most recommended thing to do is to go to college after high school and take out a student loan if needed and pay it off when a career job is obtained. Working very hard now equals to a better life, job opportunities afterward, and positive friendships
"Young, almost broke, and attending college". Today 's public and private colleges and universities contain very high tuitions that lead to students with decades of debt. People recognize the need for education farther than high school to make a life-sustaining wage, but many students are compelled to choose work over school. Numberless of students choose work over college because the rise of college tuition is making it harder and harder for students of lower class or low income to obtain the education they want and need. Although, other students adjust their class schedules to their work schedule, at the end they wind up withdrawing from college. This supports low completion rates in the United States. The purpose of college is not just to
Now, society has taught us that without education we cannot afford to make good money which is not always the case. Growing up not only did I hear it from my parents but I also have heard it from other parents, teachers, and old students. School culture and society culture has given us a point of view where we can’t get a decent job or feel like we will without a paper that will look good on our resumes. This affects what we do in our everyday life trying to fit education with work or people to meet. We as a society go out of our way to spend time in school so we can try and get the best out of life changing our schedules and spending money on something these cultures have set up or we ourselves do for the sake of a good
It is very common that many high school students hold part time jobs while going to school. When these teens work, they are able to learn and experience life lessons from ethical and moral work. Knowing that school is aways and should be a priority, students should work while in high school because working helps students be more responsible with their lives, help them practice time managment, and also helps students see and experience the real world.
students who work jobs come to the conclusion that making money in the now is somehow better than
Nowadays in the era of globalization, students are encouraged to have work part-time that will create them to become more experienced in their future, teach them to become more independent and mature in real life. Although the students have enough money to pay their fees and able to accommodate the necessities of life but we totally agree that the working part-time should be encouraged because work part-time can give more benefits to students. According to King and Bannon (2002, p. 2), more than 50 percent of full-time students have jobs and “nearly 46% of all full-time employed students work 25 hours or more.” As students work more, they have less time to become engaged in campus life both inside and outside the classroom. Many students love to have part-time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student. Before, teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they were actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the students nowadays where they are more likely competing to each other to have a job. Most of the students are working part-time jobs and some have the intention to work. When we are in any fast food restaurant, supermarket or shop, there are must be school students who are working. Besides, students can gain a lot of experiences, students should be encouraged to work part-time because they can learn new skills and learn how to manage their financial properly.
