Task 3(b) Responsible management of waste is an essential aspect of sustainable building. In this context, managing waste means eliminating waste where possible; minimizing waste where feasible; and reusing materials which might otherwise become waste. Solid waste management practices have identified the reduction, recycling, and reuse of wastes as essential for sustainable management of resources. This process of waste disposal focuses attention on burying the waste in the land. Landfills are found in all areas. There is a process used that eliminates the odors and dangers of waste before it is placed into the ground. While it is true this is the most popular form of waste disposal it is certainly far from the only procedure and one that may also bring with it an assortment of space. This method is becoming less these days although, thanks to the lack of space available and the strong presence of methane and other landfill gases, both of which can cause numerous contamination problems. Incineration/Combustion
Incineration or combustion is a type disposal method in which municipal solid wastes are burned at high temperatures so as as to convert them into residue and gaseous products. The biggest advantage of this type of method is that it can reduce the volume of solid waste to 20 to 30 percent of the original volume, decreases the space they take up and reduce the stress on landfills. Yet, waste does not just disappear. It must be stored, buried, or burned somewhere. This disposal process has gone on for hundreds of years since populations produced huge amounts of waste. The continued use of landfills and dumps has caused the perception that there is a garbage crisis.
Energy can come in many different ways but not every way is good for the environment. By-products produced from the waste or energy being converted can cause harmful repercussions to the environment. There is more than 200 million tons of hazardous waste that is created annually through such things like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, cleaning products, etc. (High Temperature Incineration, n.d.). I will be discussing the incineration process as well as the pros and cons of incineration based waste to energy have on the environment. I will also be going over my views on incinerating waste and what steps should be taken to get rid of waste more effectively. Environmental impacts from pollution in landfills have caused a shift in different perspectives on what steps should be taken to reduce the amount of pollution. Society today has felt that throwing away waste products is a form of reduction in helping the environment. Many are not aware, however, that landfills are polluted with increasing amounts of waste that are either not biodegradable or perishable. Recycling is an environmentally beneficial solution to reducing millions of waste left in landfills, cutting down costs on energy resources, and clearing pollution from the environment. Recycling should therefore be mandated in schools, communities, and across the country.
Firstly, the biodegradable waste needs to be segregated from the non-biodegradable ones. The further steps discussed here is taken forward with the biodegradable waste which if dumped in landfills end up generating hazardous methane gas, obnoxious smell, breeding ground for disease causing vectors like flies; and sometimes, even underground water gets affected adversely.
Resource recovery and waste management are rapidly becoming global concerns as depletion of non-renewable resources is inevitable without significant intervention. In many cities, the existing technology and infrastructure have the potential to operate far more efficiently with less resource use and more recovery than they are currently achieving. National policies should encourage long term Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) solutions focused on the sustainability of non-renewable resources rather than short term solutions. Planning and implementation of policies relating to waste management and resource recovery need to consider practical solutions at the local level. Successful resource recovery and waste management are heavily influenced
