Non-liquid material discarded as useless finally piles up as solid waste generating unwanted toxicity affecting Mother Earth and her environment. A quote of British author and playwright, Diane Samuels flashes in mind, “You mustn’t throw them away. Let me have them.” So, the solution is reuse and recycle. Let’s see how. Benefit of Recycled Waste Firstly, the biodegradable waste needs to be segregated from the non-biodegradable ones. The further steps discussed here is taken forward with the biodegradable waste which if dumped in landfills end up generating hazardous methane gas, obnoxious smell, breeding ground for disease causing vectors like flies; and sometimes, even underground water gets affected adversely. Biodegradable or organic waste can be primarily reused for soil improvement and animal raising; it can also provide energy. Herein, the discussion will centre around the contribution of organic waste in soil improvement. In this regard, the basic technology followed is …show more content…
In this vermicomposting technique, red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) are used to accelerate the process. Compost is usually generated in a week. Eisenia fetida are commonly known as red wriggler worms, which can be easily identified by yellow tipped tail. In this procedure, 1 kg of red wriggler worms is added to 4-5 kg of biodegradable waste. After collecting the waste, collection pit is left undisturbed for 5-6 days with the only exception of adding water and churning it at regular intervals to promote the decomposition of the waste. The waste along with the worms is covered with hay to trap moisture and heat. This also helps in maintaining the appropriate darkness required for keeping the worms inside it. The biogas plant that was present allowed the people to trap the gas produced and use it for household purposes; like cooking etc. Similar protocol can be adopted by the villagers,
What is Vermicomposting Vermicomposting is worm composting, it’s a great way to recycle your carrot peelings, eggshells, coffee grinds, and used paper towels. Red wiggler worms can eat their body weight in food each day. As they eat, the worms create castings that are nutrient-rich organic matter. When castings mix with decomposed organic matter, you wind up with compost full of beneficial microbes and nutrients that, when spread in a garden, help feed, nourish, and protect growing plants. According to a 1998 article in Bio-resource Technology, vermicompost is compared with high-grade horticultural compost "has desirable aesthetics, has reduced levels of contaminants and tends to hold more nutrients over a longer period, without impacting the environment.
CHAPTER-2 Solid Waste Solid waste, are the things you throw away, whether it may be solid or liquid, it’s still considered as solid waste. What is a solid waste? Solid waste is the trash you’ve been making your whole life and as I’ve said before all the things you throw are considered solid waste, here are some examples of solid waste. Waste tires, septage management, scrap metal, latex paint, furniture and toys, garbage appliances, and vehicles oil and anti-freeze empty aerosol cans. Solid waste can also clog canals that are used for lessening the amount of water when it rains, it can also damage our ozone layer as you know the thinner it gets the lesser oxygen is left.
Deficient waste administration can cause natural contamination, development and duplication of vectors like creepy crawlies, rodents and worms and may prompt the transmission of ailments like typhoid, cholera, hepatitis, and AIDS through wounds from syringes and needles tainted with human. Also, wellbeing dangers related with poor administration of biomedical waste, thought should likewise be given to the effect on ecosystem, particularly to the risk of contamination of water, air and
Many people believe that we should not recycle anymore, but this is not the case. We, the people of the world, need to continue to recycle because we do not want our children to grow up in a world where there are no certain species of animals due to recycling failures. We also do not want our children to grow up thinking that it is okay that they throw their garbage on the ground, and not have to pick it up. We need to teach our children that they need to take care of the earth that they are living on, because they only get one. Recycling is one of the most beneficial environmental issues that we have here on this earth. Recycling saves energy, limits pollution and supports several environmental factors of the economy. “In 2003, the savings from recycling 54 billion aluminum cans exceeded the energy equivalent of 15 million barrels of crude oil- or the amount of gas the U.S. uses in one day,” according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA estimates that 200 million gallons of used oil are not disposed of properly, and if we were to dispose the oil properly then we could keep the oil from polluting the ground and the fresh water source. According to E. Takatori, “… While on-going societal regulation treats material recycling as the dominant cycle, the properties of recycled plastic remain the most port
I. There seem to be some background points I must go over before I can properly persuade you to recycle; this includes definitions and standard waste makeup.
Composting is the process of biodegrading the waste material in which an enormous number of materials like hydrocarbons, nitrogenous compounds, acids, their derivatives and even other organic and inorganic substances can be remediated from the environment (Finstein et al., 1986). Compost pro...
This strategy for organic waste management is highly evolved among many food manufacturers and is often a source of revenue for production facilities (Food Waste Reduction Alliance,
Our world is getting to the point to where we will be surrounded by trash. There are hazards happening because of the excess trash, which could have been recycled. Although the government is not doing their best to make these hazards stop, surprisingly it is the non-governed organizations that are trying to make the difference. Proven studies and facts have been made about these issues, so people should take this into consideration and start recycling more. Recycling is a beneficial process that is not required globally like it should be because citizens are uneducated on the process and what it can do. People who are not recycling do not know the hazards they are causing everywhere.
Degradation can occur in a period of days to centuries depending on what chemicals are in the organic compound and how they react in accordance to nutrition in soil, water in soil, and the soil’s matrix. Specific nutrients are crucial for chemical reaction within the organic substance to cause

Recycling is a six step process. First they must be cleaned and separated by the
As humanity develops new technology, the magnitude and severity of waste increases. When computers were developed, it widely was believed that the need for paper would be eliminated. On the contrary this was widely proven false and we are now utilizing more paper than ever. Canada is not an exception as the typical Canadian generates an average of three pounds of solid waste each day1. This alone shows what a careless species we have become- using and disposing materials without even considering the damage we are causing. With half a trillion tones of waste around the world, only 25% may be reused for a second or third time and less than 5% can be renewed limitlessly1. These facts are true only in developed countries. Since these traditional waste reduction methods have been proven inefficient, we must endorse new innovative technology to arrive at a solution.
Recycling is important in the effort to preserve our environment for future generations. We are running out of locations to put landfills. Recycling is a simple and effective way to reduce the amount of waste stored in landfills, yet many people do not know how easy it can be. For example, whenever I go to Shoprite® and I b...
...or lakes (Weber 2). When people just dump waste products instead of recycling, it is a misuse of the soil and can contribute to serious health conditions in animals, plants and humans.
The future for these products is also quite often over looked. The components are not made to be detachable, so the different materials cannot be recycled correctly or recycled at all, which leads to landfills and pollution. Every material, from wood to steel to carbon fibre has an environmental story behind it and these can all be reused, however there is quite often not enough thought into this design aspect. These components are not labelled correctly for recycling and the result is a scarred landscape. However recycling these days has now turned into a way of life for us. Bins are now everywhere marked with the unmistakeable ‘three-green-arrow’ (another remarkable graphic design – now playing a huge role in the way we live), which lets members of the public kn...
