Social work is the practice in which the practitioner works with clients in order to resolve and prevent problems that occur with individuals and group (Walsh, 2010). There are many different characteristics that a social work should obtain to be successful. These characteristics define social workers and also helps social workers to provide the best possible care.
Values are one characteristic that social workers should strive to have. Values are what is right and good (Walsh, 2010). When talking about values, there are many different kinds of values to consider. For example, one can have personal values, societal values, and professional values (Walsh, 2010). Personal values would be what reflects ones beliefs as to what one thinks is right and good (Walsh, 2010). Societal values is what society deems and right and good (Walsh, 2010). Professional values is what is the ethics that guides one’s profession (Walsh, 2010). While all of these values are almost the same they are different from each other. Ethics and values are commonly confused. Ethics refer to what is right and correct.

As a social worker one needs to commitment themselves to working with people from diverse backgrounds and with the underserved population. Multiculturalism refers a social workers ability to work with people from many different cultures. A social worker also needs to understand these different cultures so that they can effectively treat the client (Walsh,2010). Social Work is the study of people and how they interact with the systems in their environment and other people. Social Workers use theories, sets of ideas or concepts, of human behavior and apply them within their professional social work ethics to the problems facing clients in order to help them gain balance in the systems in their lives. Theories help to organize knowledge enabling social workers to help make sense of problems. There are many different theories. They have been grouped into broad categories called theoretical lenses (Rogers, A. 2013).

They should be aware of the history, culture, and contemporary realities. They also must have good skills in patience, listening, and tolerance of silence. A social worker needs to be aware of their own biases and need for wellness and display humility and a willingness to learn. They need to be respectful, nonjudgemental, and openminded. However, researchers must find a way to measure cultural competence with studies that examine beliefs and evaluate actions of social workers. It should include several cultural groups.This will be highly important in building a knowledge base. Doing these studies there can be a better plan to include cultural competence and serve clients from different backgrounds a lot better.
According to Erin B. Comartin and Antonio Gonzalez-Prendes (2011), authors of the article “Dissonance Between Personal and Professional Values: Resolution of an Ethical Dilemma” the six core values of the social work profession are, “service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence” (p.1). As professionals in the field of human service, personal values of a social worker will not always be congruent with the core values of this field. As Comartin et al., (2011) suggests “social workers benefit from understanding that growth occurs when these conflicts are acknowledged, explored, and resolved” (p. 11). Having worked in the substance abuse field for nearly a year, I find that my personal values have conflicted with the core value of “dignity and worth of the person” on numerous occasions. One specific situation that I continue to struggle with the most are women who continue to abuse illicit substances despite discovering that they are pregnant. Though I have personally not had the opportunity to provide therapeutic services to a expecting mother abusing illicit substances, I have had the opportunity to observe fellow therapists manage such situations. In the National Association for Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, there are many standards a social worker should uphold in order to promote a healthy and helpful relationship with the client. One such aptitude is Cultural Competence and Social Diversity, which is in section 1.05 of the NASW code of ethics (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). There are three sections associated with this competency “Social workers should understand culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths of all cultures”. It is assumed that “social workers should have a knowledge base of their clients’ cultures and be able to demonstrate competence in the provision of services that are sensitive to clients”. As a final point “Social workers should obtain education” in order to understand cultural diversity and oppression in people (NASW, 2008, p. 9).
The National Association of Social Work's Code of Ethics is not only something that is crucial to someone in the field of Social Work but can also be applied to everyday life. These values in which the Code of Ethics mandates professionals to use are very important in knowing how to help clients in bettering their lives, and in help society as a whole become a better place. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
The six core values that are described in the Code of Ethics by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) are social justice, service, importance of human relationships, dignity and worth of a person, integrity, and competence. According to the NASW (2016), these core values are the foundation for the purpose of the social work profession. It is essential for social work professionals to be able to put aside their personal values, and embody these core values when working with clients.
The following paper aims to discuss and analyze the way in which my personal values intersect with the values I hold as most important within the profession of social work. It would stand to reason that these values would stand on common ground; however, there are places where my personal and professional values diverge. These conflicts may prove to be problematic within my chosen career unless I find a way to prioritize my values, or find ways for them to work harmoniously with each other.

Values facilitates the decisions in recognising what is worthy and valuable, with this, weighs out the important and less important, when there is a conflict of values. Ethics is set of moral principles of values, and these contribute to individuals and what groups live by. Ethics consists of factors being culture, religion, and these continuously effect a person’s beliefs and ethics. As individuals continues to develop and there adapt different values with ethics. This is through past experiences and the expectations as our life pattern changes. Core values in social work practice are the code of ethics informing our understanding of the difference and diversity. Social work profession is evaluated by a whole set of guidelines, measures put in place by regulatory body, giving the movement to put in place new governmental laws and guides within this field.
A social worker must present themselves as a learner and understand clients from all experts of their own experiences. To show your respect to the clients as a social worker you must be able to show that you understand complexity of cultural identity. Cultural competence targets social workers knowledge of development, focusing on culturally specific demographics, characteristics, values, and intravenous technique.
