In the TED Talk “What Adults Can Learn from Kids,” the presenter, Adora Svitak, discusses the frustration children feel when they are called “childish.” To begin, the speaker states that although the actions of minors may seem immature to those who are older than them, children can accomplish just as much or more than any grown person. One is reminded that he or she should not treat a child like someone who is incapable of making any differences in the world. This individual believes that because he or she is now an adult, he or she is capable of making the best choices; however, this person fails to recognize that he or she was a child at some point in his or her life. Although many would argue that adults have more experience with real-life scenarios, not many recognize the potential an adolescent withholds. To begin, the speaker emphasizes the frustration much of the youth undergo when they are called “childish” for being themselves. A grown individual tends to believe that it is alright for him or her to criticize the imaginative thinking of youngsters. However, much of the older generation fails to recognize that it the futuristic ideas that children possess which drive our society in the right direction. This idea is further expanded on when the speaker says, “But the way progress happens, is because new generations and new eras grow and develop and become better than the previous ones.” Adults must realize that the so-called immature children before them are the futures of tomorrow. It is important to consider their bright ideas, for they may be the missing piece in a puzzle. The ability for creative thinking that amateurs possess is immeasurable, and grown-ups have much to learn from those who are younger than them. Therefore, the dreamy world that many children revolve their lives around may be the answer that will aid millions of adult critics to lead more successful, stress-free lives. In their article, “The Creativity Crisis”, authors Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman explore the urgency of the downfall in the public’s “creativity quotient.” Bronson and Merryman emphasize the necessity for young children to be imaginative. Through an IBM poll, they verify that with the decrease of creativity in our society comes an array of consequences seen in the work field. The authors remind readers of another reason for the importance of creativity; they argue that creative ideas can solve national matters. Hence, Branson and Merryman believe that original ideas are key for a better world. The dictionary definition of a child is a young human being, an immature person and offspring (Oxford, 1976). This shows how much society has changed since the 1900’s. Modern-day children are worse in almost every aspect of creative thinking when compared to previous generations. Society is hurting children’s imagination by not being supportive of outside time and social connections. With modern electronic devices, kids seldomly need to leave the house in order to be entertained. In Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2005), he implies that youth is defined by a person’s intellectuality, relationships, and experiences.
Think back to your childhood; a time where everything and anything was possible. Magic and imagination was something that was used everyday in your life. Now think about where you are in your life right now. There is no longer any magic or mystery. Neil Gaiman and Antoine De Saint-Exupry write two different novels that include multitudes of fantasy. But in the midst of all of the fantasy is the fact that children and adults think differently. Both of these novels explore the idea that children think positively while adults grow out of that stage, developing a pessimistic way of thinking from what they experience in life.

One of the biggest issues teachers have is between teaching required content and integrating creativity into the daily sessions. The National Curriculum and state standard often create boundaries towards the teacher’s ability to develop the lesson, as the intention of including creativity sometimes resorts in a teacher centred learning environment. The teacher’s role should be to generate lessons and create activities that encourage students to be more open to their creative side. This is vital as it exposes children with varying learning styles to different ways of learning.
Children live in a world designed for them by adults. The two cultures, child’s culture and adult’s culture exist side-by-side. As the children eventually mature into the adult world, they grow up learning the structure of what is expected of them. As children challenge the authority or expectations, they are battling the construction that was predetermined by the adults. Children have to live in a world where they are living in the structure, as well as being active agents. The two combating ideas are one component that makes growing up a difficult learning experience.

Creative Arts in early childhood education refers to children’s participation in a variety of activities that engage their minds, bodies and senses (Sinclair, Jeanneret & O’Toole, 2012; Kearns, 2017); to inspire all children with the opportunity for creative and imaginative expression. Duffy (2006) and Sinclair et al. (2012) state that creativity is the process where children use their imagination to problem solve, develop new ideas, independence and flexibility to accomplish tasks. Furthermore, when educators foster creativity, they are assisting children in making meaning through play and developing their growing capacity to communicate, collaborate and think critically to meet the demands of life in the 21st century (Duffy, 2006; Korn-Bursztyn, 2012; Sinclair et al., 2012).
