Every story has a beginning and this is the tale of how the Westminster Kennel Club came to be. The early years of this storied show are explained in the book The Dog Show 125 Years of Westminster by William F. Stifel published in 2001. The club derives its name from the long gone Westminster hotel in Manhattan. Another key area of the Westminster Kennel Club is the iconic pointer symbol. This pointer named Sensation was one of the Westminster Kennel Club’s foundation dogs. An article from the official Westminster Kennel Club website copyright 2015 titled “About Sensation” describes him as a handsome lemon and white dog with a fine head and especially good body. Sensation has been the logo of the club for all of its 140 years. The first annual Westminster dog Show officially titled “The First Annual

The misrepresentation of Pit Bull breeds in the media has been reflected in American culture. As these dogs were incorporated into World War I propaganda, they were perceived as symbols of courage and strength, the archetype of American dog breeds5. When, in the 1920s and 1930s, American Staffordshire Terrier “Pete the Pup” starred in the comedy Our Gang, later known as The Little Rascals, Pit Bulls were considered “nanny dogs” and family-friendly pets7. When the media focused heavily on illegal dog fighting rings and gang culture in the 1970s and 1980s, Pit Bulls were called demonic and unpredictable. Through their many roles, they have shown versatility and resilience, and lately they have suffered greatly.

Pit bulls are believed to have originated in the late 1700’s, when the terriers, typically small dogs bred to catch vermin, were crossbred with bulldogs, a stockier dog whose duty was to catch stray cattle. This produced a dog with a high prey drive with a medium-sized, stocky build and powerful jaws. Contrary to popular belief, the dogs were originally used in the sport of bull-baiting, where dogs would attack the cattle - not other dogs. Since the sport was executed in a pit, the dogs were dubbed ‘pit bulls’ and that name has stuck since. When the sport was banned in 1835, the people who relied on these dogs for an income turned the dogs against each other.
In recent years it has been the pit bull which has come under the scrutiny of legislative bodies, as their reputation becomes more and more sullied by street crime. To say “pit bull,” however, is a vague reference to several pit bull types, which are considered separate breeds by registries like the American Kennel Club (AKC). Each type has a slightly different breeding history; many began with the breeding of bulldogs with terriers to produce a loyal, compact and tenacious breed (“American Pit Bull Terrier”). The three standard pit bull types most often mentioned by name in breed-specific legislation include the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. That is not the extent of the legislation, however, which also includes dogs that “substantially conform to the breed standards established by the American Kennel Club” (Melvindale)....

A repeated point made throughout the book was the fight for dominance between the dogs. In a canine hierarchy, the dogs on the top are generally established through physical dominance over the other dogs. Generally speaking, physical superiority means that it is ordinarily the largest dogs that have the highest ranks. Prince quickly embraces the new language and begins creating poetry. Prince’s artful expression of words makes the
Take a moment and picture a dog in your head. What do you see? You may see many different things depending on your own personal encounters with the species. There are many types of dogs out there. Some small, some large, long-haired or short-haired. There are many variances in what a dog can look like. One thing that does not change, or should not change, is the importance for every dog in this world to be given love and affection, no matter its characteristics. This is what leads me to believe that the obsession with producing and owning purebreds needs to come to a halt. Continuing to create these so-called “best dogs” is dangerous to not only the purebred’s health, but also devalues mixed breeds and can cost them their lives in animal shelters where they may never escape. My interest in this topic caused me to look into seeing what other people felt about it.

Dogs are common throughout the world, either as a domestic pet, a protector on a farm, or an assistant for hunting amongst others. Regardless of the reason for having a dog, most people have either owned one for themselves or have known somebody who has owned one at some point in their life. Despite the relative normality of having a dog in your life in one way or another, the reasons for dogs coming into existence are not common knowledge among most people. Throughout a great portion of mankind’s history, dogs have been an essential part of life. The truth is, dogs were actually created in part by man.
At Petco one of the first things I came across was the Dog Bar, a table set up very similar to children's candy stores where one is changed by the pound for the candy put into the bag, but these weren't candy these were dog treats. The set up of the Dog Bar shows the store's desire for the pet to be seen as a child, which is a concept that has existed in American thought since the early 19th century. The Dog Bar is a tab...
As Barbara Angus gives an account of her experience as an action researcher, she clearly shares the triumphs and defeats educators may encounter in the classroom. After reading the article, I particularly want to address the following research question: How can educators support students by introducing them to various sources that can address their inquiries as learners?

Do you ever take your dog for a walk and wish you had somewhere else to take him/her like maybe a dog park? Well I believe that is how people around Harrah feel because the nearest dog park is at least 15 miles away from the folks in and around the town of Harrah. Harrah Heritage Park should have a dog park because it will increase the community, can raise more money, and will keep parks cleaner.
Despite the long standing tradition of consuming dog meat to deflect the heat of the summer in Southern China, the Yulin Dog Meat festival only began in 2009 where 10000 dogs are slaughtered for this barbarous festival. This brutal event has been condemned by people across the globe. This essay will discuss this issue through the various theoretical perspectives and explain how Ethnocentrism is demonstrated.
